Mine has a chip in the metal on the bottom and the silver is showing through right out of the box.

Mine has colorization worn away along all four antenna seams directly out of the box. Sad, but still deciding if it bothers me. May or may not exchange it.

Every time I see someone post "flawless" in this thread I think of the fruit of the loom commercial where fruits are singing.

I've always been partial to white, but love the sleek gunmetal look.. real seamless looking as the white one isn't with the plain aluminum. I still am probably going to op for the white one as I dont like this scuff business as I am one of those hardheaded people who dont like to use phone cases.

Out of the box dings are certainly unacceptable. But am I the only one who will kind of like the worn look after a year? There's something vintage about it that reminds me of an old Leica:

Could be. Someone mentioned that they managed to "scrape" their scuff off. So in that case it was some aluminum residue that was left on the part after milling. Hmm. I still think I'm switching to white. I was leaning towards the white one to start with anyway. I like black overall but I was never in love with the black metal. Prefer the look of the silver metal (like my iPad, Air, the 4/4S... etc.).

This is exactly what I was wondering... If some residue is left behind by the milling process that would wipe off with a cloth and some gentle elbow grease. Regardless I'm getting AppleCare+ and the color I prefer, Black. I think changing to a color you don't prefer over this is slightly nuts...

No offense, I understand the mentality - I used to be extremely OCD about my devices. Ultimately I decided to relax and let the warranty give me the peace of mind it's designed for. Things you use daily get wear, period. Only way around it is mummifying it in protection which inevitably detracts from the appearance.

With AppleCare+ I can live with minor wear and if it becomes really intolerable or some other problem develops that I can't live with, I know that I can always take it in and trade it out. And from my experience with the iPhone 4S, if you are polite and the issue is even *possibly* a manufacturing error (even if it's debateable), the store clerks will hook you up without the $50 fee. This has even been the case with near-microscopic pieces of dust under the rear glass of the iPhone 4/4S which does nothing to affect functionality.

In conclusion, if you're OCD, I will refrain from judging you because I've been there, done that. However, I would urge you to reconsider your mentality and just for a moment think about lowering your expectations. Don't take that the wrong way!! I don't mean lower your expectations for customer service, performance, or being able to swap out for a new one at will... Obviously this is expensive and we all want the very best. I mean being realistic about keeping a device pristine from Day 0 to grave. It will only lead to heartache and gnashing of teeth.

Edit: Just want to add I do agree it's unacceptable for the phone to have damage right out of the box. If that's the case with mine, I will swap it out AFTER the launch rush is over. Really no reason to do it today. I'll probably stroll in sometime in the next 2 weeks to buy/activate AppleCare+.

UGH 2 nicks on the bezel right at the volume buttons and a 1/4" scuff on the upper left of the word IPHONE on the back...wtf? ive had every model and this is the first time ive gotten a subpar item out of the box!?!? i dont even know if its worth attempting to exchange as a case will hide it but still....i pride myself in never scuffing or scratching it.

My iPhone 5 black is near perfect. A few nicks here and there but this is expected. People it's aluminum. It's not steel. Aluminum is soft so expect things like this.

Unbelievable. Waited all night for a black iPhone 5 and mine has at least ten chips along the edge of the bezel right out of the box. I'm so *********g pissed I'm ready to throw it out the **********g window. Don't want a white phone and already sold my 4s and all my cases so I'm totally screwed.

I expect it after normal use. Not spending a huge chunk of change. It would be like buying a brand new car with dents and nicks. I would expect that after driving the car for a while....

My phone also came with several chips and nicks on the chamfers. Will call Apple later to see about a swap.

It's a phone. Your phone functions. You can call or visit an Apple store to get it replaced.

Maybe its not a scuff

Just received mine and immediately noticed what looked to be a scuff on the bottom right corner of the area. It was white and right on the chamfered edge where everyone is seeing it. Wasn't small like it was a piece of dust or lint either. I was so mad and was getting ready to return. Then I started to rub it with my finger for a few seconds (get your mind out of the gutter).....but still stayed the same. Kept at it for a few more seconds and it started fading away until now its completely gone now! Matches the rest of the phone that has no scuffs at all.

So maybe give that a shot first before jumping to conclusions.

This is great news and I hope more people try this so we can discover what percentage of these issues are the result of a leftover residue rather than an actual "scuff."

No problems on the bezel for mine, but like a few other people, I have minor discoloration at the edge of the antenna and on the right side, right at the breaks, and I have one ding in the aluminum that shows silver on the back right (very small, but you can feel the deformation of the aluminum). It's not perfect, but frankly, you really would need to look to see there was an issue. Since I'll have a bumper on mine starting Tuesday, I'm not concerned right now, but I'll wait and see how it holds up over the next few days.

Still...this really shouldn't happen out of the box.

But, on the good side, the phone feels fantastic in hand...boy it's REALLY thin. Calling now to activate.

Aged metals look so good IMHO. I put a bumper on it for now (guy gave it to me for 30% off) I'll likely remove it the minute it annoys me...so in a week or two.

so what's everyone thinking? about 20% of iPhones are damaged out of the box? The poll is showing around 35% but obviously you're more likely to search for/vote on something like this if it has happened to you.

PS. sorry if this has been said, I haven't been following the thread, (too much time on the UK iPhone thread ;) ) but has anyone noticed a pattern, batch wise or anything?

Unacceptable to open a brand new product and find cosmetic defects like the ones mentioned here.

Pics...I took the unboxing photos in front of a clock in case someone challenged that it happened through my doing should things get worse and I decide to exchange. Though, I love the look of the black and probably won't exchange unless it just starts looking like complete garbage over the next week or so. The shot of the ding I also have with the clock, but this shot is clearer.
