Mine came in flawless condition. It doesn't have a painted look, but has a brushed aluminum look. I don't foresee any problems. Any way I will go with Speck Candyshell and ZAGG Invisible Shield HD.

Had a couple of minor dinks in the metal edge on mine right out of the box. Small though and very hard to notice. The silver does not seem to show through which is good. Also a small slight scratch on the back, but no silver showing through and again barely noticeable. Kind of crazy right out of the box to be like that. Of course I put a case right on it, but was hoping I wouldn't have to. May exchange for a white, but I really do like the looks of the black. Will see how it goes.

Mine has colorization worn away along all four antenna seams directly out of the box. Sad, but still deciding if it bothers me. May or may not exchange it.

saw the exact same discoloration on a unit on display at the att store. i hope mine doesnt come like this.

Just go mine delivered. Black 32GB, Production week 37 (September). I will post how it looks after I open the box.

Sounds like an issue in building process. Shell made in one factory, glass in another, etc and then assembled in another location. I would imagine most of the scuffs occurred right after the painting process and either did not allow proper curing time or when they were boxed for shipping to assembly plant. Poor QC.

Otterbox Defender on it as soon as I got it out of the box. It will look pristine when the iPhone 6 comes out and I have to sell this to Gazelle.:)

Mine just arrived.

The edges are fine, but there is a .5 inch or bigger scratch on the bag and a smaller .25 inch scratch next to it.

What a joke. The slate does look nice, but why live with scratches out of the box?

I checked out the display units at my local Apple Store. There were 10 on display, I checked like 7 of them. 5/7 of them were completely perfect. 1 had a < 0.1mm silver nick near the antenna black paint band. 1 had a small marr, that remained in the black annodized color.

Then there's another guy checking out the iPhone that dropped it for about a foot from chest level to the bench. I checked it out afterwards. There's a small marr, but that also remained in the black annodized color.

This leads me to believe that to strip the annodization off, even at the chambered edges, you need to literally scratch it with something moderately hard. That is, if your phone doesn't come pre scuffed....

Naked usage, no way.
Probably gonna go with skin and super thin case (Desmay).
I still think the iPhone 4/S design is the most scratch resistant ever. I got min in Wrapsol full body and i have no shatter problem at all despite mulitple hard falls. Only the plastic edges are marred, but remained white as we all know.

Tis a good day today, sold a fine art darkroom print for a few grand, got my 1956 Leica M3 back from tech for a cleaning, received $1,400 in large format film from my supplier and....

My black 64GB is flawless....:D:apple:

Most likely caused by the the factory rushing to meet Apple's demands for September 21st release. Hopefully Apple will demand higher QC and later builds will come out without as many flaws.

I've been buying Apple products for a long time. Mine came with scuffs right out of the box. Pretty disappointing.

Fedex just delivered mine. No scuffs on my black but there was a greasy smudge / fingerprint on the plastic film on the front. Terrible quality control.

I've got 2 very tiny little scuffs as you see here, personally doesn't bother me going to just put a body skin on it and keep it. I probably would be denied even trying to return it right?! I mean look how small they are

Just got mine and there is a minuscule discolouration on one of the antenna bands. Not enough to put me off though. Besides i'll be installing one of these soon so its a moot point for me.

Anodized metals, by definition, are only colored on the surface. Whether it's aluminum or steel, anodization can still scuff off.

Here's a nice, weathered anodized steel watch:

So it's not like steel would have made a difference vs. aluminum.

Now, scuffs on a watch like that might give it "character" but I'm not certain that a piece of high tech needs the same kind of character. :D

Look at it this way, if you drop your iPhone 4S you're probably gonna wind up with shattered glass on one side of it.

If you drop your iPhone5, you're gonna get a nick that you can fix with a sharpie. :)

One of the two I just received has a small scratch in the top corner on the bezel. Not what I expect from Apple but I will live.

This phone is insanely fast.

Does anyone know if I can take an unopened box to the Apple store and get it swapped out for a white one despite the fact that I ordered from Verizon?

Mine arrived with chipped glass and a scratched antenna. I went to the Apple store and got it swapped out, but the new one has a bunch of marks by the headphone jack :(

I wish there was an easy way to cover these up.

I'm also interested in seeing whether or not snap on cases will damage the surface. As much as I'd prefer going "naked" because these phones are truly gorgeous, I am thinking about throwing on a thin, clear snap on case to help protect the aluminum.

I'm also trying not to worry about it too much. If it gets to be too bothersome, I can just use Applecare+ and get a new one, but I tend to be really bothered by super noticeable cosmetic damage, and bits of silver shining through an all black phone would bother me.

I tried to take mine to Verizon to swap, and they were going to charge me to return it, unopened.

I guess I'll open mine up and see if it's damaged. If it is, I'm taking it to Apple this time. Will they let me change it to white one if it's damage though is what I'd like to know...

Chipped glass, I would immediately exchange for (like you did).

What I've got? Not worth the hassle, but I'll keep an eye out. The slight discoloration at the end of the band seems common. My tiny little nick is there for sure, but it is so small that you really would need to be inspecting the phone closely to notice it. I'm not going to worry about it.

Next scuffgate thread will be: You've got your black phone with scuffs/dings out of the box: are you going to return it?
