Brand new iPhone 5 taken out of the box 5 minutes ago. This is quite disappointing...

OMG, now the phone is totally useless! it won't work....yeah you're supposed to have a pristine item, but the phone still work.

LOL all these people concerned about scuff. you guys have any real problems??? I can only imagine how you'd all deal if you were told yuou have cancer!

Way to make a statement based on nothing but anecdote and conjecture.
Dude, chill out cult leader. Saw my last post? How does that fare with your theory that I'm from the competition?

Still, this thread has 89 votes on flawless and 76 votes on scuffing. Even if your conspiracy theory is right and many users have registered new accounts here and voted on scuffing in order to skew the results, the percentage is still bad. There's no way around that.

I've still decided to keep my order of the black one, but I'll definitely double-check it in the store when it arrives.

After seeing this initial thread and doing a lot of research, I bought a white model today. Beware, though, the white scratches just as easy the black, yet it's far less noticeable. I wonder why this was never caught by anyone at Apple.

I recently had to get my 4S replaced due to malfunction. I had to get 3 replacements as the first two had chips around the bands.

The quality of the phone production does seem to have decreased in recent times.

My iPhone 4 & original 4S were perfect out of the box.

Therefore, we have multiple issues here. Chips/scratches from manufacturing (could be on any part of the phone) as well as the flaking edge that can be out of the box as well or happen later.

this isn't s scientific poll, any ****** can come here in click, iphone owner or not....lol half the phones, hahaha, i love when people just make up random nuimbers
LOL anyone can come here and say they have dings or a friend of a friend of a friend got the phone and it has scuff marks. That's why we need pics. Plus sometimes people go crazy over the tiniest little nick that you'd need a magnifying glass to see.

Though I don't want to down play anything. If there is an issue with the manufacturing process on black model Apple needs to get fixing it right away.

Black 23 GB arrived. No noticeable scuffs and I've had it in daylight, indoor light, and with my IP4's LED light on it. Every time I've thought I've seen a scuff it's been dust. Going to look over again, but I've honestly found only one thing that could be a scuff, must be point god knows what of a mm, but only when it has an LED light shined directly onto it. In normal light it looks black.

Trying very hard to find flaws here, wonder if that will last? Mine was production week 35.

Has anyone called the Apple Online store to attempt an exchange? Can they setup an exchange, or do you need to return for refund and reorder?

I called a retail store (UWS in NYC) and they said they couldn't exchange in store, and instructed me to call 800-MY-APPLE. On hold with them right now as they are telling me I should be able to swap in store. Ahhhhhhh

My 32Gb Black (Verizon) came with scratches near the volume controls and mute button..

Interested in what they say. Mine has not come yet, but I was going to see if I could exchange the unopened one in Soho.

Went to store, white does not look anywhere near as good as black! No comparison. I am keeping black regardless. Will swap out as many times as I have too. Just swap sim cards.

Oh I did? you quite sure about that, considering that was my first post in this thread.

Yeah, it's not been out for 24 hours - if this is an issue, there's a chance it could look much worse in 24 hours.
It's not "rediculous" to expect a £700 phone to be pristine, especially out of the god damn box.

Well, I'm typing on my pristine, black 5 right now. And there's not a blemish on it.

You call apple directly or go to the store to
Get the white model ordered?

Could vary based on where you are. In Canada for instance (where I'm from) I don't think the stores carry unlocked iPhones. So for me, exchanging at a store is probably not an option. All I did was place a brand new order on the apple online store.

Here is a picture of the nick in mine. I didn't take one of the crooked home button. I made a genius appointment for Monday.

People always need a good "gate" to worry about. It's happened before, antenna-gate, heck, even Watergate, arguably however, scuffgate is far more serious.

This would drive me absolutely nuts. Guess I'll be sticking with the 4S!

I called Apple this morning and my replacement is due to be shipped out in the next 2 days

I just placed a brand new order assuming I'd lost my "spot in line" and would have to wait 3-4 weeks now like everyone else. So I might get a replacement faster by calling them for an exchange instead?

Mines got a couple out the box. Only annoying one is below the mute toggle. Also put one in clipping my incipio feather on. Oh well a bit dissapointed its not more rugged but one of those things I will have to live with.

Watch collectors knew this would happen!

Same here - my experience with watches told me the black anodized finish would be a nightmare. I ordered white anyway (I think it looks better) but warned all my friends. None listened.

I knew it! Even though I think the black is a cool looking phone I knew this would be an issue being an avid watch collector and knowing that no matter how durable the coating or how it's applied be it anodization, PVD, DLC, etc... they ALL wear away and show the base metal.

The black 5 will look good for a couple weeks and then this forum is going to be flooded with "my black is rubbing off" threads and I will be secure in knowing I made the right choice with the white. Put some wear on the raw aluminum of the white iPhone 5 and all you will see is more of the same, the same will happen with the black but instead of black it will be raw aluminum!

I think "scuffgate" is a perfectly appropriate term for the upcoming flurry of internet hate that will be swirling when all of us early adopters get our grubby hands on black phones.

Fresh out of the box, there are some light scuffs on the chamfered edge. Back looks good. But handling this thing for just an hour or so and I can tell it will scuff and scratch. A lot. Is is the end of the world? No. Most cell phones get scratched/beat up over time. But I guess we're all spoiled when it comes to Apple products. If I had a Rolex watch, I'd be pretty bummed if it got scratched/beat up.

When the 5s comes out and people sell their 5's, there will still be plenty who prefer black, and if they all have similar wear, your resale value really shouldn't suffer much. They'll all have it. Unless this is just a bad batch with defective coatings.

I just got mine at Apple store. I opened the iPhone 5 black 32gb AT&T and there was a small nick on the bottom left corner (Nothing major and in reality something that I could put up with - But I waited 13 hrs so I wanted a flawless one)

I immediately asked for another one. Lady working there seemed somewhat annoyed but got me another one. Thankfully the second one had NO flaws =)
