I just got mine at Apple store. I opened the iPhone 5 black 32gb AT&T and there was a small nick on the bottom left corner (Nothing major and in reality something that I could put up with - But I waited 13 hrs so I wanted a flawless one)

I immediately asked for another one. Lady working there seemed somewhat annoyed but got me another one. Thankfully the second one had NO flaws =)

Nice. Don't hesitate to ask for another. You guys waited in line/spent hundreds of dollars; you deserve to get what you paid for.

Sorry to hear about all these scuffs guys. I wonder if Apple will even address it, or if they'll look the other way until the 5s comes out and say "now made with more durable material"

Mine has quite a few chunks out of the sides.

Wear and tear is expected of course, but not out of the box! You wouldnt buy a new car and accept bits of paint missing.

Dude, chill out cult leader. Saw my last post? How does that fare with your theory that I'm from the competition?

Still, this thread has 89 votes on flawless and 76 votes on scuffing. Even if your conspiracy theory is right and many users have registered new accounts here and voted on scuffing in order to skew the results, the percentage is still bad. There's no way around that.

I've still decided to keep my order of the black one, but I'll definitely double-check it in the store when it arrives.

I'm a cult leader because I don't accept the results of this poll at face value? Seriously?

Seems like you're the one who needs to chill.

Well, I'm typing on my pristine, black 5 right now. And there's not a blemish on it.

Well that's great. Just like I've had a pristine white 64GB delivered, but that's not the point. It's obviously a problem, if people are having theirs fresh out the box marked and dinged. It's quality control that's the issue.

Also, if this is 'damage' is occurring from just packaging the phone, it could point to a manufacturing problem - imagine what it may look like in a few days, weeks, months.

If after a few months it got really bad, would any of you guys try to scrape off the sides and bottom evenly to make it look more 4-like? Or just live with the scrapes?

I wouldn't be surprised if Apple makes a change very soon to the producation process skipping the black anodizing and just using the same raw aluminum band as the white version. Less customer complaints and less production costs = win/win

I was thinking right after the intro that the black would have looked better with a silver body... or at least silver sides... but then do you go with white or black windows in the back? Because you can't just anodize / dye one surface of the part. The whole part gets dunked into a tank for the anodize / dye process. But ya, I actually think that a white and silver one with the screen replaced for black would look cool :)

----------

The white is not immune to dents/scratches.

I just put a case on mine and there are two chipped off dents on the back underneath the lower volume button.

In the end though your phone is going to show some kind of wear at some point.

Yup. It will. Of course. But it should be pristine out of the box.

----------

OMG, now the phone is totally useless! it won't work....yeah you're supposed to have a pristine item, but the phone still work.

LOL all these people concerned about scuff. you guys have any real problems??? I can only imagine how you'd all deal if you were told yuou have cancer!

What does cancer have to do with anything? Look, I spent close to a GRAND on this thing (factory unlocked). For that kind of money it's reasonable to expect your item to be pristine out of the box. If it gets scratched up after a couple months... that's totally fine. But for $1000 it should be perfect out of the box.

Yeah bad analogy as almost all cars on the lots are loaded with swirls and scuffs as dealers dont give a crap about the paint....so yeah bad comaprison, thats why detailers make great money, fixing up dealer paint issues....

So would it be worth it to try to take my online AT&T order to the Apple store and try and exchange it for white? Do they keep any for exchanges?

Just opened my 32GB black iPhone 5, absolutely flawless! Not a scratch or scuff in sight! People are overhyping this thing and panicing. When you think about it, people are more likely to post on here if there is a problem, if there isn't an issue people wouldn't be all over the forums.

Thanks for proving my point, all i am saying is depsite even if it was a million bucks, I'd hate to see how some of your react to actual bad news, instead of a scuff on your phone. It a frickin' phone, get over it....theres probably 1 million more things to worry about in life then if the precious iphone 5 has a scuff on it....seriously, if you're so worried about the scuff, excahnge until it's perfect 'til your hearts content! If not, then move along, its a scuff on a phone

Just opened mine and I notice a few scuffs but what had really got me pissed is a scratch on the glass at the top left corner in screen real estate space. I tried to photograph it but it just didnt come out right. Guess I'll be ordering a new one.

Not happy with you right now Apple

Oh yeah and I am week 33 (August)

Since most of the scuffs are there right out of the box, then it likely was a defective application. Which leads me to believe that it really isnt a scuff caused by normal wear and tear. That is good news.

Ugh...no scuffs or whatever but a huge dent with shiny silver underneath top right. Put it back in the box and its going bye bye. Horrible build quality.

You have a problem with people choosing to exchange their phones because they are scuffed? Why? What's it to you? I'm not freaking out. I'm not saying is a huge problem in my life (far from it). I'm just saying I'm going to exchange mine. That's completely reasonable. As I say, I paid almost a grand for it. But I'm not freaking out. I'm just ordering a new one. No biggie. And if others are fine with scuffs and don't care, good for them (and good for you). Again, no biggie. Stop telling people what they should and shouldn't worry about and worry about.

How can you tell when it was manufactured?

Flawless out of box and after hours of using, still no marks.

ETA: Production week 34 (August)

Could be. Someone mentioned that they managed to "scrape" their scuff off. So in that case it was some aluminum residue that was left on the part after milling. Hmm. I still think I'm switching to white. I was leaning towards the white one to start with anyway. I like black overall but I was never in love with the black metal. Prefer the look of the silver metal (like my iPad, Air, the 4/4S... etc.).

I called a retail store (UWS in NYC) and they said they couldn't exchange in store, and instructed me to call 800-MY-APPLE. On hold with them right now as they are telling me I should be able to swap in store. Ahhhhhhh

My 32Gb Black (Verizon) came with scratches near the volume controls and mute button..

Any update 49r? Are they going to setup a phone / mail order exchange?

Good luck!!!

Half hour wait?

yup plenty of inventory left at my apple store.. i ordered a black one coming from AT&T.. I got two vouchers for white ones.. when mine gets delivered its down to the At&T store to return and back to the apple store to claim my vouchers.. ahh so much work and hassle but I dont want to deal with scuff gate and being paranoid of even setting my phone down on a table fearing it will scartch
