The glass scratched just as easily tbh. I constantly had to place my 4/4S on soft surfaces to avoid it. Even the tiniest grain of dirt cause the glass to scratch or dent.

Obviously the key difference is that the scratches were only visible under direct light with the glass.

The problem is not flat surfaces but the sharp edge just before the glass begins. Tat sharp edge was rounded in 4 and 4s and made of pure aluminium, this is a coating and sharp thus very prone to scuffs. Nomatter if you put a cover on or keep it naked, a minimum of 1 scratch is pretty much guaranteed the very first week you use it

Just got my 32Gb in black/slate. Flawless condition thankfully. After seeing how some people's boxes were packed mine was different from what I had seen online.

I was a bit nervous as when I got the box it was bludged at the bottom a bit, however when I opened it, it was one large piece of cardboard with the phone box tightly wrapped in saran wrap to the cardboard with the shipping info.

I have AppleCare+ so I think I might just rock it caseless and hope for the best, it's such a pretty and light phone that I really don't want to cover it up!

I took mine to the Apple store and they swapped me. It took a while because the Verizon servers were having trouble but all done. Glad I did it. The big one I had on the front was distracting.

I have an appointment on Sunday to see a Genius. Going to try to swap it out for a white one. If I do return it and get a different color do you think in need the headphones cables and outlet plug or would they just keep the ones from the new phone?

In the past when I had to have my iPad swapped out for issues withe the screen they didn't seem to care.

On the phone with Apple, this sucx...not a huge deal but given that I just unwrapped it and it came with scratches is not cool. Hope they can fix this.

Kind of wish I would have ordered the white one, I like black look better but seems if was aluminum color you would not be able to see these imperfections.

Well, honestly, that test is rather stupid. What is shown in this video is not normal daily usage - that's extreme. Every single dent, scratch etc. made in this video would only happen rarely in the lifetime of an iPhone. A test with an actual meaningful result would be if someone would take a pristine, new iPhone 5, use it without a case for a week or two and then post photographic results. What is shown in this video is just WAY over the top and not exactly a realistic scenario at all.

Did you order your iPhone online? I just tried to exchange my iPhone at an Apple store for a white one, but they were getting activation errors because I ordered it online and they would only allow an exchange for another black iPhone. If I wanted to exchange for a white one, I would have to go through Apple online.

Yeah, they were having some kind of issue because I ordered online, but eventually it worked. I kept black though.

Oh ok thanks. Maybe the issue is because I want to swap it with a white model.

I just opened mine and have this problem, but only in one spot so far. I ordered online from Verizon. If I wanted to switch to white, would I call Verizon? What if they didn't receive anymore white phones to send before my 14 (or 30?) day window period is up?

Thanks!

Just switched out my black 32 gb for a white. I'm happy with the decision. Best of luck to everyone that sticks it out with the black. Maybe Apple will come through and offer some refinished side panels.

iPhone 5. 16GB. AT&T. Week 36.

Just opened mines (kept it under wrap for like three hours) just now, I guess I'm another unlucky one.

Apple should really send those quality control guys a pair of glasses!!

Should I keep it? Or change it out (in a week or two)?

I really wanted to like the black one because it looks newer, but the white one looks appealing too.

Can i get this iphone replaced look at the nick in the middle edge

Opened my new iPhone and immediately noticed a huge chip on the aluminum band directly below the home button. It's extremely annoying as it reflect light directly back towards you. I'm taking it to the Apple Store tomorrow. For $400, I do not except a pre-scuffed phone.

To confirm apple has a separate Genius Bar stock?

That I was unclear on. They had plenty of my model left in stock so they just grabbed one from the rows they had out. I have heard there is a separate stock but I can't confirm.

Mine looks good. I haven't been around it with a microscope, but it looks sound after a close, rotating inspection. My volume down button rattles a smidgen if I shake it, but I don't normally shake it.

I won't use a case. I won't inspect it closely from here on out. Good luck.

There's a definite chip out of mine. Just above the volume buttons. The main reason I will be returning is because I eventually want to sell this on eBay. Makes it a hell of a lot easier when you can write 'Perfect condition' rather than having to show some scuff marks.

People saying "It's just a mark, maaaaan." If we were talking about a $50 dollar watch, I'd have to agree with you. This cost me £600, for that price, it should be pristine.

I've got a case for it, so here's to hoping the next one they send is okay.

Has anyone that ordered theirs online had a response from Apple in regards to this? What is the process, will they send out a replacement straight away? (If stock allows it) or will we have to send back our phones first?

Did you preorder your through Apple? I'm having the hardest time trying to swap my black iPhone for a white one.
