Why is everyone so upset!? I'll tell you why - Apple ********* up, period.

Btw- I received a flawless black 16 gig AT&T, lucky? I would disagree. Every single person should have received a flawless iPhone, am I wrong? And here's the point that people are missing... Apple is the most valuable company in the WORLD, worth over 650 BILLION dollars. They thrive from QUALITY, and Brilliant marketing. When Quality is promised and advertised, but somehow overlooked, it simply Strips the integrity of your shiny new iPhone 5. That's why everyone is so pissed, Not because we can't be super careful or we don't know how to buy a case. Remember, my flawless phone? Granted it's perfect NOW, What about a day, what about a week, what about a year? The quality of the iPhone 5 is simply obsolete to the iPhone 4/4S (aren't new models supposed to be better?). What if Apple advertised heavier, thicker, smaller screen - would you buy? Would you buy if it was worded like this... Lighter, thinner, faster, less durable then 4S, and over 40% of pre-orders will come pre-scratched (conveniently left that one out)? Of course it's not intentional, isn't that what we're paying for? While streaming the keynote I couldn't believe and was completely shocked of Apple's choice to use anodized aluminum - and those were my thoughts from sitting on the couch... Hmm, Ironic (Anodized aluminum blows!)?

I know millions of people were so excited and got letdown, it's sickening. It's disgusting how deceptive Jony Ive and Apples collective approach to Marketing the iPhone 5 "Quality" can be. However, that's what Apple is good at. Soon enough, your marketing can only be so good before people start feeling taken advantage of. Just as fast as people jumped on the Apple bandwagon they will ditch it like a burning pile of s***! I'm a huge advocate of Apple and enthusiast of the company and products it HAS produced. It's incomprehensible how a company worth over $650 billion could let this slip. If you're going to advertise STRESSING the companies superiority to quality and charge a premium, at very least, deliver. If not, there's nothing special about Apple.

Love you Apple (kisses)!

so when people start selling their iphone 5 in a years time to get a 5s we will see ebay listings like " As new - with a few scratches by apple! "

Well said. Scuffs look good on vintage cameras not on a 21st century smartphones. With this design you have to very careful what case you use, because some hard plastic cases can scratch when you insert, and who knows even leather case may rub off some of this paint. I guess we will be handling this version very careful and pass it on to next owner.

Did anybody set up a appointment for this issue

If yes, what was the experience ? Or what did the rep tell you regarding this issue

I have my appointment for tomorrow
Will you guys know

What's making this even worse is Apple faithful (fanboys) defending Apple, or at best staying silent on the issue. Disgusting that they can't see past their own devotion to this company.

Think of your iPhone as the scratched suit of iron man ;)
It's scratched but it looks damn hot!

but Tony Stark can afford to replace his Iron Man outfit after every battle.

Yes. It went horrible. AppleCare said they called the store to verify stock. Drove an hour to the store. The genius talked to the manager, came back, and said they had no stock. Drove an hour back home.

My iPhone doesn't have any scratches at the moment although I imagine it's only a matter of time. With that being said, will getting something like ghost armor protect against this so-called "scuff-gate?"?

Now that would be a great business idea for someone like iFixit ... "replace your iPhone 5 aluminum parts with steel". I totally loved how durable my iPhone 4 was and actually liked the heft of it ... I mean, imagine making a Rolex with aluminum ... haha. On a side note, how come the iPad's and the Mac's aluminum seem to be much more durable?

i wonder what would the difference in weight between the alu and the stainless steel bezel

they should have used stainless steel on the iphone 5 to avoid this kind of very stupid issue just to save a few grams :(

Actually, one mod I would love to see is a black front panel in a silver body. I think that would look awesome. I prefer the silver body of the white but the black face of the black. Haven't been a fan of the "slate" at all since the unveiling.

I went to get Ghost Armor installed today, and it is really ******.

The cutouts seem not to the right dimensions, and SO MUCH of the phone is exposed still even after they put it on.... I got a full refund and had it taken off. Not worth the money they charge.

Honestly I have just decided to leave mine naked. I have Apple Care + for a reason

True, I would probably have gone for the black if that was an option, and then the black/slate would really be the murdered out version :p

So today I went to the Apple Store for my Genius Bar appt. to purchase Applecare+ (since I bought through Verizon) and I spoke with the person I got about the damage I had on my phone when I opened the box. I was lucky and only have a small nick on the corner, but fact of the matter is, it's a brand new phone and it should NOT be damaged right out of the box.

I was told simply that they were told by all management to NOT give out their open models (I can't remember the name. The perfect ones they give you if yours is completely broken???) because their stock was ultra limited and they were saving them for emergency cases. After a little insisting, he agreed to swap my phone out no problems when they get available stock, despite the fact that I purchased my phone through Verizon. He made notes on the system and I have 60 days to bring my phone in and they'll swap it out without detracting from my incidental damage.

It was sort of annoying to me that he refused to acknowledge that this is a widespread problem, but I guess that's his job. He made sure he included that he's "taking my word for it" with the out of box damage.

It's frustrating that I can't just get a new phone right now, but I like that he gave me an extra 30 days to get my replacement. He said to go ahead and activate and use my current phone, and they'll still swap it out if there's any more cosmetic damage (short of a busted screen).

Overall, it's a lot better than paying a $45 restocking fee and dealing with Verizon.

My experience is in the previous page, but long story short it was positive.

To those claiming that this issue is plaguing tons of people keep in mind that people who are happy tend to not post on this subject. Take the information in threads like this with a grain of salt.

Who says it comes right off? I tried to find marks on mine so I could report it to apple. Just in case I wanted to swap for white, I'd have it showing on my account. I can't find anything to call about. Even after bumping the edge of the phone by mistake on misc items and furniture. Still no coating coming off.

Get back to me after a couple weeks of normal use.

have black att 16gb from week 34 and i have a ding by the power button (right side) straight out of box - it actually looks a lot bigger than some of the pics i have seen posted - kind of on the fence about what to do about it.....the phone in general is just amazing......it is so zippy, love it!!

how are the white phones holding up at apple??

so many reports of the black one at the stores just hammered.....if someone is in the store, would love to see a pic!

I'll bet all the heat will make Apple quickly come up with an 'official' anti-scuff case too shut us up. It will be free for the unhappy scuffsters (assuming they can prove theirs is scuffed to Apple standards.)

They of course will make a big issue of it being free. People will gush at how wonderful Apple is. The case will suck. Meanwhile, There will be many, many, shabby looking Apple phones across the globe. Iphone 6 will not have this issue (but some other pretty terrible problem, most likely).

I can second this experience but with a twist. They admitted to the problem! I'm in San Diego and was direct to the UTC La Jolla store by an Apple support rep to pick up a replacement phone.

When I arrive I was immediately turned away because apparently they had so many people come in to replace phones they were supposedly out. After calling the support rep back and having them call that Apple Store back personally, I was directed to the store manager.

The store manager went on to say that not only were many people returning for replacements, when they were opening the replacement white box phones, 8 out of 10 were damaged in some form.

She instructed me to go home and enjoy the phone that I had until Apple could resolve the issue and they had proper replacement in stock.

I decided to take my chances and have them open one more. I apparently got lucky and found a undamaged phone. In the end, both the Apple support rep and the store manager both acknowledged this was a problem, and I think one Apple was obviously not prepared to handle.

I'm sure when stock is more plentiful in a few weeks they will swap them out without question. Holding onto it scuffed for a few weeks will not kill anyone. Everyone who bought has 1 year of Applecare to swap defects, so you wont lose anything if you dont do it in the next few days. They obviously do not have stock to do it for everyone right now/
