So one good piece of advice would be to take a photo of the scratches/scuffs/nicks and make sure the pic includes exif info as when I spoke with Apple Care, they asked me to email them photos and also when I received the phone.

I'm sure when stock is more plentiful in a few weeks they will swap them out without question. Holding onto it scuffed for a few weeks will not kill anyone. Everyone who bought has 1 year of Applecare to swap defects, so you wont lose anything if you dont do it in the next few days. They obviously do not have stock to do it for everyone right now/

Well, add me to the list who got ********* over on quality control

I even took a video of me unboxing it in front of the AT&T employee + manager so there would be NO DISPUTE that the phone was already damaged before opening.

On the back of the phone (right corner) there are two gashes + a third gash the same distance the took off some of the coating.

I then was told by the AT&T manager "Go to Apple to get a replacement, all we handle is the service side of things an we don't have anymore in stock anyways"

So I go to Apple an the manager there tells me "Nope, go back to AT&T if the product was damaged while you we're opening it at the store they need to be the ones to get you a new one." OK... now I'm PISSED!

So I go back to AT&T and the manager gets on the phone himself calling apple to talk to a manager there. They start yelling at each other over the phone and eventually the AT&T manager hangs up an tells me that he is sorry for the inconvenience and will either return the iPhone with no restocking fee or get me a new one as an exchange.

Genuinely lol'd at this. Seems so surreal for a situation like this to happen!

In all seriousness, hope you get your 5 sorted soon though :)

The number of red faces i'm seeing is too damn high! :D

Received my AT&T black 64gb on Friday. I quickly noticed a small mark near the headphone jack where the metal isn't anodized or was chipped or something. I called Apple today and they offered to replace it if I mailed it back. But, I am concerned that whatever I get in the mail could be worse or have a slight problem in a more visible spot. As of now, the entire phone minus that one spot is in pristine condition. I guess I will just accept my launch day flaw and move on.

I've attached a photo of the mark/chip/scuff, this is the only angle where my iPhone 4 would focus correctly. The mark looks a little bigger when seen straight on. I'm curious as to whether or not you guys agree with my decision.

I actually was voice recording the whole thing with my 4s :p

After getting bounced around an both sides passing the blame off to the other side I wanted proof in case I needed to talk to a district manager later on.

When I was first taking a video of the unboxing in front of them they looked at me like I was NUTS! ;)

After the manager phone call to Apple though I was like "you now see why I document everything?!"

Thank you for the kind words though :) hope we all can end up getting a phone without damage to it already.

If you ever manage to get this recording online (even as a youtube upload, with subs), PM me the link, I feel compelled to hear it. Might just be my British sense of humour which finds it all overly amusing though :p

Well this is my dent... Its tiny but annoys me now... I just wonder what other marks and dents it will pick up with normal use :(

When looking at the iPhone 5 display models in the local Apple Store I noticed a nice size dent on the edge of the phone. Apple must be using a very low grade of aluminum on the iPhone 5 compared to the iPad and MacBook's or the unibody housing is just machined too thin for aluminum. Either way I wish Apple used the same stainless steel like on the iPhone 4/4s. I wonder if it was cost cutting decision or they just wanted the phone to weigh less.

You can even see a chip in the anodizing near the plastic band...

Man I had my 5 in my pocket with a few pennies. It's scratched to ****. I see silver all around the glass. The black paint on the chamfered edge is very weak. I'm so pissed. I highly recommend a bumber or full case for this thing.

Pictures please. This kind of usage is inevitable to happen to all iPhones at some point so now I'm even more worried than I was before. Shouldn't need to vacuum my pocket before I dare put my iPhone in it.

No scratches on mine, but on the lower right antenna, right where it meets the screen, there's a blue spec/dot that can't be scratched off w/ my fingernail. Think they'll replace it for this?

can u repost the link to the article please? not showing up only main page - thx

It's not an article. The point he's making is that the Apple Discussions site/site secton is down for maintenance :) could imply that they're making some kind of ding/scuff related update, but thats unlikely.

This is really unbelievable. I love everything about this phone. Don't want to downgrade back to the 4, but at this point, I'm not sure what else to do. Full body armor?

When I was at the Apple store I noticed the same blue specs on a white one. I would exchange it...

If it really bothers you then just go setup a Genius appointment and get it replaced. IMO though I would just hold onto it until (if) Apple acknowledges the defect and has made changes to their production, cause if you get it replaced this quickly, the same issue is bound to happen again.

I think I got them off, scratching gently with a needle. Kind of hard to see now though.
