Made a Genius Bar appointment and had my phone replaced. They didn't have a new-in-box to exchange it with, but I didn't mind a white box phone. The new one is fine asides from a microscopic blemish that I won't bother with.

They were really nice and quick with the replacement.

Aren't people who say they are going to wait a few weeks to replace them taking a chance that Apple will deny them due to an increased chance that the damage was caused by the customer?

A lot of people also seem to think that Apple will replace a cosmetically damaged unit under warranty or AppleCare +. I'm not convinced that is the case. Does anyone have any experience with this kind of exchange with other Apple products?

Man I had my 5 in my pocket with a few pennies. It's scratched to ****. I see silver all around the glass. The black paint on the chamfered edge is very weak. I'm so pissed. I highly recommend a bumber or full case for this thing.

Pics please?

Antenna-gate was a totally overblown non issue.

No, it was not. Nor was battery-gate. They were both legitimate, valid concerns reported by a large number of the iPhone user base. If anything, scuff-gate is the non-issue because the function and performance of the phone is not affected like it was with the other two issues.

Just because it didn't affect you personally does not negate the issue.

Did anybody set up a appointment for this issue

If yes, what was the experience ? Or what did the rep tell you regarding this issue

I have my appointment for tomorrow
Will you guys know

I got my iPhone 5, yesterday, delivered through Verizon. It noticed it had a scuff on the band.

I took it to the apple store and they exchanged it without a fuss. Even though the first replacement they gave me at the store, had scuff marks, they found a second replacement that didn't have any.

This seems to be a widespread issue, has even replacement iPhones which are suppose to be QA'ed more, might have scuff marks or scratches out of the box.

So I would just go to the store and tell them you want it replaced. If they have questions just point them to this thread.

It's that simple.

Let #scuffgate begin.

no metal is black all the way through.

^ -_-

I read the AppleCare+ agreement and while it covers accidental damage it states that it doesn't cover regular wear such as scratches.

Tried to get mine swapped an apple refused to help me at the apple store. Talked to Apple CORP at least 4 times today trying to get mine swapped out with little success. This maybe my last apple device due to this poor service.

Time to grab a gun...

total disaster for apple - not cool - any way you slice it, the phone will just get destroyed - they should stop production now, fix the problem, send out a statement, deal with PR - it they continue to make them, it will just cost them more money to replace them all!

iPhone 4 'antenna-gate' is the prime example that this won't happen. At best they would make a new bumper case that covers the sides and back.

I am an Apple fan just like everyone else on these boards, but if people really think a product is shoddy and hate it, vote with your dollar. Return the phone. Most people however will end up buying a case and not noticing any antenna issue and Apple will sell millions.

I can second this experience but with a twist. They admitted to the problem! I'm in San Diego and was direct to the UTC La Jolla store by an Apple support rep to pick up a replacement phone.

When I arrive I was immediately turned away because apparently they had so many people come in to replace phones they were supposedly out. After calling the support rep back and having them call that Apple Store back personally, I was directed to the store manager.

The store manager went on to say that not only were many people returning for replacements, when they were opening the replacement white box phones, 8 out of 10 were damaged in some form.

She instructed me to go home and enjoy the phone that I had until Apple could resolve the issue and they had proper replacement in stock.

I decided to take my chances and have them open one more. I apparently got lucky and found a undamaged phone. In the end, both the Apple support rep and the store manager both acknowledged this was a problem, and I think one Apple was obviously not prepared to handle.

I'm glad that other people are having the same experience. It seems like they're forming a plan on how to deal with all of this, and it's good that there won't be any issues getting my phone switched out. Overall, I can deal with a scuffed up phone for a few weeks. I mean at least I get to use the phone!

I recommend a change purse for you. Come on, you don't put your new phone in a pocket together with some coins and then complain about scratches.

I don't get why this hasn't made the macrumors front page or engadget yet. If it gets some more press I'm sure Apple would have to release a statement but for now this is quite hidden to most people (and the average Joe won't inspect the edges when he opens the box, because he "knows" that the apple product will be in perfect condition).

I expected the world's most expensive phone with the world's best build quality to take some "light" wear without showing extreme damage. My expectations are certainly unmet.

Within the 14 day return window why is this an issue? Wait a few days for the stores to get them back in stock, then return your defective one and buy another. Problem solved.

apple care is mailing me a new device due to a few marks on mine. guy was super nice on the phone. emailed him pics and he seemed like this was the first he heard of it, but wanted to make sure he got it resolved asap.

best part of the call was when the rep said he liked my circles on the pictures :)
