just called apple - they were sooooooo nice - i wish i got her name but anyway - i told her about my phone - she said they will send a replacement next week - asked if i wanted white or black - picked white - they will send a return label in the new iphone package to ship my current phone back

i would suggest calling as opposed to going into apple store - i wish their tech support was that great!!

now to hopefully getting otterbox to upgrade my order from a commuter to a defender....my gut tells me that this phone will need full on case cover....also, the reviews on the commuter on amazon were horrible for the IP5

took pics of my phone damage with canon rebel but iPhoto on my imac says the icloud servers are down so it can't send + resize pic so i can post here - but yet my mac email is working fine?!?!?

As an engineer, I chuckle at how quickly people jump to conclusions in the absence of facts.

For example, the fact that many phones came out of the box damaged doesn't necessarily imply phones are easy to damage. They may be completely unrelated issues.

Phones that have been damaged by light handling also do not guarantee all phones will be. It is certainly a more relevant piece of data but far from conclusive.

Time will tell if this is truly an all encompassing manufacturing issue or a more localized problem.

Finally, the test mule I saw prior to release was perfect after many weeks in the field.

Did you speak to Apple Care or sales? I was told that I couldn't get my Black device replaced with a White one. They also said that in order to swap it I would have to ship my phone in and wait for them to ship me a new one, taking over 3 weeks.

Mine is shipping right now from another retailer, if it arrives and I open it and it's scuffed in the box, can I return it to the local apple store and exchange for a new one there? (assuming they would even have any lol)

Just looking at this I suddenly realised, some entrepreneur will undoubtedly start selling black paint pens colour matched to the slate finish and call it ... Wait for it ...

iTouch-up
There was another thread about this, but it didn't get much attention. I think that will be the ultimate solution. There's a product that sounds like a Sharpie, that's specially made to touch up anodized black aluminum. Don't know if its any better than a sharpie.

Here's one, http://www.amazon.com/Birchwood-Super-Black-Gun-Touch/dp/B0049Q5JX4

the fact: it is unacceptable that any of these phones have any flaws at all!! this is apple, apple who we pay for quality + great products! we are the people who have made apple the most valued company in history!!

well i called iphone sales as applecare was "closed" - i spoke to a rep who was able to get me to applecare

What does Apple do with returns from some of these 'I changed my mind' buyers? Do they send it right back out? My black iPhone has a small dent out of the box, but no nicks or scratches. My concern on a return is to get a replacement that is worse: dust under screen, or my choice of everyone else's nicked up and refused leftovers....

i am sure they do not get sent out - i believe apple will be taking all of these phones to the bad phone department after some in the quality department get fired for letting this happen in the first place!!

You called after AppleCare hours, but they somehow got you connected? I tried that earlier but was told they're completely closed.

yes, just about an hour ago.......i called the general number but went to iphone sales who then got me to an applecare person

Thinking of switching my model

I have preordered an iPhone 5 in black in a AT&T store nearby, since the black model was revealed to have so many quality issues, I'd like to switch to the white model. I was wondering if those guys in AT&T will let me do that. Do you guys have some related experience? BTW, my order is still in the `Processing' period.

My iPhone arrived yesterday morning with the top left side chipped. I called Apple earlier today, and the person on the phone recommended I exchange it at the local Apple store so that I could get another phone as soon as possible.

Went to the Apple store, and the person I spoke with asked me 3x if I had done this myself or if it came out of the box looking like that. He was all, "Are you sure you didn't do this because we will still replaced it even if you did." After I told him it came like that, he told me to come back tomorrow because they're out of the iPhone I had.

Um, rude.

It's just a phone. With normal use this will begin to show up either way. Worry about something other than a simple flaw. If everything was expected to be perfect, this world would be screwed.

When people work hard for their money and they buy something in NEW condition. They want exactly that.

Do you buy cars with scratches? Do you buy sunglasses with scratches?

Got an iPhone that 1) wouldn't activate and 2) nicked on the bezel out of the box. Called AppleCare and was told that there were some replacements available at a nearby Apple Store and that I could go in for a quick replacement (phone only, keep my current box).

The first replacement had a deep scratch on the bottom left corner near the headphone jack. The second one had two nicks, one on the top right corner and another on the side. The third had a large scuff on the bottom left corner near the headphone jack. The fourth one, and the last 64/black they had, had a small nick on the left, near the sim card tray.

I took the fourth one as I needed a phone today, but will be heading back in a few months when they get their manufacturing process up to snuff for another replacement.

Any suggestions on how I could do the same? Was this an on-contract device?

Did they mention how they got to an Applecare representative when the department was closed?

Thanks!

I went today as well. The genius went through 2 before the third one, which he brought out and showed me for my approval. It's perfect. I got lucky.

Damn you.

:D Sounds like perfect ones are out there... going to need to head back in a few weeks when I can be certain the replacements they have are different to the ones I saw today. Did they only replace the phone?

Advice on screen protectors?

As far as preventative measures go, anyone know of any full body (front/back&side or at least front and back) screen protectors for the 5? I've heard good things of spigen glas.t but thats only for the front, ive never had to use them before and for this will be more for the back and side than anything else. Any tips are appreciated.

Yeah just the phone, I had brought the box with me just in case, but kept it in the car. He brought out a small white box that could only fit the phone inside. It had the plastic on and everything, and it was a pretty easy swap. I signed some stuff on the ipad, swapped sims, bought ac+ and I was on my way.

Honestly I wasn't expecting them to have any in stock, since that's what I had been hearing all day. I guess the sales associates don't know about these and only the geniuses have access to them. I had just gone in for the ac+ and lucked out. Definitely happier now.

Check out other stores around you maybe?

Kind of semi-unrelated to this thread. But I spotted this on a humor site.

How do you get a screen cracked with no scuffs on the sides?!

Ah okay, similar to my experience then (except the genius brought out just the phone, not in the white box). Plastic on as a new one would have though.

I actually called AppleCare about this problem fully expecting to have to send it back in (the Apple Stores around me told me that I'd have to exchange it with Apple as I ordered it online), but to my surprise he said that I could do an in-store exchange. He was very helpful and called all of the Vancouver-area Apple Stores to see which stores had availability for me and this was the only store with 64/black replacements available today.

Oh well, at least I can use the phone for now. If I end up scuffing this one up even more, then fine, but if the only damage is still the nick that's there right now then I'll be going back for a replacement in a few weeks.

Maybe the dent is on the top left or top right corner which the image doesn't show? ;)

Post a pic of your scuff/scratch, curious to see how bad it is. My first one was honestly not so bad, I could live with it.. but still glad I did it in the end. I bought the black/64 as well, and maybe that's why he had a few to open for me. I also asked him if people had been coming in like me, and he said not really. So I don't know if we're being too picky or just got unlucky.

Definitely don't give up, just because you know in the end you'll have some regrets for not "trying."

I called customer service on Friday and the lady offered me a free case, when they're available. I may just call when the Sena is added to the store and see if they can send me one. She also told me I'd have to return my phone and then buy another. Not the case after all..
