Like I said above, maybe stop bothering everyone with a string of pointless phone calls, wait a few days and simply return it under the blanket 14 day return window. Why all the hand wringing with AppleCare when the return process is already in place?

I was sent to the store by AppleCare and told to call back if the store didn't swap. I am doing as instructed. Any more questions?

just exhange for a white one i know the black one is nice i mean i had black 3g and 4 but 5 white is just really not like the previous whites the back silver aluminium is so nice and looks so awesome next to my macbook it really is gorgeous so more apple like than the black one.

They aren't readily doing this in many cases. They are forcing a return, wait 5-7 days for upgrade eligibility to post back to your cellular account, then re-purchase rather than an exchange.

Do you think an apple store will replace the phone for a problem that size?

No sarcasm here, I have a similarly sized issue, so I'm curious.

1 out of the 5 phones I've tried is okay!

I bought 3 black 16Gb phones in total, 2 from Apple and 1 from Koodo. All the phones were sealed in their boxes. The first Koodo phone had some paint worn off the front bezel edge and Koodo replaced it. The second had 2 significant dents in the rear casing, and the SIM tray didn't sit flush with the body, and they replaced that too. The third has a small chip in the glass but my daughter was so fed up that she decided it was the best of a bad bunch and to keep it. Of the two Apple direct phones, one is flawless (mine) and the other has a small chip and paint missing on the rear bezel edge (my wife's). I'm looking forward to see what (if anything) Apple has to say on the matter?

Yes. Was the reason the store wouldn't swap that they're out of stock?

Like I said. You'll have to wait a few days until they have another phone to give you.

Does someone with knowledge on the matter know if this issue will eventually be fixed? I saw someone mention the tool used to cut these parts that are chipping might have been worn out and thus these chipping issues.

Q Control is important in any product.

Was in 2 different Apple stores yesterday and today. Checked 16 Black Iphone5 all were flawless in spite of the handling, dropping on table etc. That doesn't mean 6 months from now things will look different.

No. AppleCare verified they had stock. When I got there it seems it was DOA stock and the store wasn't willing to use DOA stock. It was well within their power to do so. AppleCare noted the case recommending they do so. The store refused to even lookup the Case #.

AppleCare sent me, and told me to call back if they refused. I drove the two hours round trip and did as they asked.

This is their problem to fix. Not mine. The calls were at their request.

They are now contacting another store. They said it has to be a store as they can only send another black.

If I don't hear back tomorrow I'll make a final trip to a store to return the phone and be done with it.

I've followed Apples requests, recommendations and procedures as directed. What is your issue?

During testing period, Apple sure must had found out about how easy the phone gets scuffed. During manufacturing I'm sure Foxconn production manager has headache with the scratches and nicks on the products on his assembly line. I'm sure the QC guy at Foxconn caught these problems. I am also sure Apple put their guy to supervise the assembly line and he saw all these problems. I am guessing that Apple has calculated the cost of the problem and came out deciding that redesigning and delaying the launch would do more harm than good to the company and shareholders.

So Apple deliberately put us customers as the second priority. We are the only ones who can punish them. Keep returning those phones. If one phone costs Apple 200 dollar to manufacture, don't feel guilty exchanging 2 or 3 phones to get the good one that they should have delivered in the first place.

It's just a phone. With normal use this will begin to show up either way. Worry about something other than a simple flaw. If everything was expected to be perfect, this world would be screwed.

Disagree. Call and bug the hell out of Apple all day long! No one purchased the iPhone only to return it within their 14 day grace period. Apple needs to know how frustrated and disappointed their customers are. The issue needs to be addressed in the most aggressive way possible (yeah you, call!). Literally millions of people, confused, inconvenienced and just bummed out - I'd be surprised if Tim Cook has any fingernails left...

There's no way Apple is going to respond in the way people would like. I'd be shocked if we saw a free case, extended return policy, or a simple whoops are bad (One of our machines in China was off 100,000,000 microns). Even if you do receive an unflawed iPhone 5, the durability/fit and finish is obsolete to the 4S, it blows my mind. The original (silver back) iPhone was less susceptible to damage/normal wear and tear (more durable, and more Apple like) than it's 5 year older counterpart. I'm certain that hardware durability modifications (if any) will not be introduced until next year - 5S. :(

Anyone out there who's advocating they're happy with their purchase please finish Apple's job and give your phone a nice buff (preferably, with 120 grit sandpaper) - for that Innovative, Antique-ish look we all wanted on the iPhone 5! I'd actually like to see it, afterall, maybe that'll be Apple's solution.

Why is everyone going to the Genius Bar for a new phone? Why not just return it and get another? I've got a good black model but am leaning toward returning for a white...scuffs and marks will be less noticeable on the white phone. I was just planning on going and saying I changed my mind on the color and I'd like to return my black phone for a white one.

I agree 100%. Perfect.

I have preordered the black iPhone through Verizon a few days ago (full price) and the expected ship/delivery date is October 12th. This scuffgate thing has me a little nervous...mainly because it sounds like it could be a hassle to deal through Verizon if I were to get a bad unit (they have blamed users for dropping it, scratching it, restocking fee, etc.), and the nearest Apple store is four hours away.

So to try to avoid any potential hassle... If I were to cancel my preorder and buy it at a Verizon store instead, so that I can look at it first...would they let me exchange/swap for another unit on the spot if I notice any major scuffs/dings while in the store, or would they just think I'm crazy and say it is normal?

It is a fact that Apple market the Iphone not just as a phone but as a high precision, luxury product. Their pricing reflects this. The customers should not receive any less than what they promised.

I work in a manufacturing plant. During production we know what we should deliver and we can easily identify glaring issue like this on our production line. The question always is whether to scrap the finished products or to release them to customers. I guess we know which decision Foxconn (and Apple) made.

Apple is going to sell somewhere between 3 an 4 million phones this weekend. There are 2,300 posts in this thread. The vast majority of Apple customers will buy cases and no one will know the difference. In the end, just about all of their customers will be happy. The vocal minority here? Not so much.

Again...

They aren't readily doing this in many cases. They are forcing a return, wait 5-7 days for upgrade eligibility to post back to your cellular account, then re-purchase rather than an exchange. Not a very customer friendly way to handle things.

If I have to return it, I won't bother re-purchasing.

Also, Apple's policy says iPhones purchased online aren't eligible for return at Apple Stores. So you have to ship it in, wait for them to receive it and credit you, wait a week for your eligibility to revert, etc.

Ah. Thanks for the info. I'm not going through that hassle if it comes to it. I'll just be careful with my phone until I find a case that I like.

I keep mine in an Oakley sunglasses bag. The same bag that has kept my sunglasses scratch free for two years. The black is flaking off my phone.

Mine has fairly obvious discolouration at each of the four breaks in the band. Does anybody else have this? I'll be asking Apple to replace it.

Just looking at this I suddenly realised, some entrepreneur will undoubtedly start selling black paint pens colour matched to the slate finish and call it ... Wait for it ...

Well, add me to the list who got ********* over on quality control

I even took a video of me unboxing it in front of the AT&T employee + manager so there would be NO DISPUTE that the phone was already damaged before opening.

On the back of the phone (right corner) there are two gashes + a third gash the same distance the took off some of the coating.

I then was told by the AT&T manager "Go to Apple to get a replacement, all we handle is the service side of things an we don't have anymore in stock anyways"

So I go to Apple an the manager there tells me "Nope, go back to AT&T if the product was damaged while you we're opening it at the store they need to be the ones to get you a new one." OK... now I'm PISSED!

So I go back to AT&T and the manager gets on the phone himself calling apple to talk to a manager there. They start yelling at each other over the phone and eventually the AT&T manager hangs up an tells me that he is sorry for the inconvenience and will either return the iPhone with no restocking fee or get me a new one as an exchange.

NEVER buy your iPhones from a wireless provider. ALWAYS buy from Apple direct, as you found out.

Apple should just keep the antenna band silver on black iPhone 5. Yea it looks cool. But it scratch easier. Sure the silver anodizing could be scratched too. But it's not as noticeable.
