Hi All,

I have owned my iPhone for 10 days. Since day one it has been in a brand new Otterbox defender series case. I took it out today to clean it and look what I found on the back. It looks like the material left a permanent mark on the back of my iPhone. I will be emailing them today to see what they can do. Any thoughts? I tried wiping it clean with a microfiber cloth and that did nothing.

My defender has done that to my Ip5. More annoying was that my screen shattered even though I have the phone in the case. That was with a < 2 foot drop.

This happened to my iPhone 5 where a permanent mark was made on the front around the FaceTime camera and mic.

Same thing happened to my wife's white iPhone 5. It's been in an otterbox defender case since December.

Issues with the otter box cases damaging phones is pretty well known by now. I had a scratch by my earpiece because of my otter box case. It made a ring but cleaned off eventually. That's why I put an element case on my 5s love it by the way.

All I'm going to say is this....

Hello Kitty

this is likely caused due to heat from the phone

You know that feel too I see...

Hey guys,

I had those weird marking from my case the Incipio ovrmld on my iPhone 5 on my slate, and I too thought it was damaged and I wouldn't be able to sell it.

What I did was get a microfiber cloth, wet it and then thoroughly rubbed the back park a few times.

I had to repeat that a few times and eventually those weird marks went away.

No need for fancy liquids. :)

So what's the verdict on this? I bought an otterbox this past weekend and when taking the case off I have noticed faint markings on the back like OP's. I've been able to wipe it off fairly easily but I'm wondering if I'll still be able to do that if I leave the case on for longer periods.

On my wife's white iPhone 5 (using Otterbox Defender) I haven't been able to get rid of the permanent marks left by the case on the front near the facetime cam and earpiece. IMO, if you don't truly need a case (some people work in environments or are themselves rough enough on their phones that a case is the only option), I personally would recommend going naked and have AppleCare+.

With very little care on my part, my slate iPhone 5 has been flawless but I have AC+ for when my luck might run out and need a replacement. So far I haven't needed it.

Hmm. Thanks. See I have the otterbox commuter so I won't have to worry about the issues near the front camera.

How about the markings on the back, do you think those'll come off?

I never liked the defender series cases. I don't like any case that has hard plastic touching the phone. When I had my 4s my defender case tore up the banding around the phone. Now I just use lighter cases and clean often. If even advise a skin for that extra level of scratch protection.

That case is so cute, is it yours? If so where'd you get it?

Lolz and thanks, I bought it in Japan at one of the many Hello Kitty stores.

There was a sticker on the case that said 'Only for sale in Japan' so you might be out of luck if you want to pick up a similar case outside of Japan.

Or have I just given you a reason to travel to the land of the rising sun?

If you take it off once a week and clean it you should be ok, you will need to do it to clean the dust out too. From my experience anyway.

I have never had any problems with my Otterbox cases but just remember to always buy them from official sources cause there are lots of fakes on the interweb

Cool. I have the screen protector covering the back side and that seems to be working well at the moment.

This happened to my black iPhone too. No amount of scrubbing with a microfiber cloth and water can remove the place. I can get it to be not as noticeable, but even then it is more visible viewing it at a angle.

You sure the cases are genuine? Lots of fakes being sold on ebay and amazon!

I used to ask the same thing when discussing Otterbox cases, and it's true there are tons of fakes out there. But ours were not fake, they were purchased directly from Otterbox web store.

Same thing has happened to mine. I have a black iPhone and had 2 different defenders on it. I've seen that happen to mine but all I had to do was wipe it down. Either that or let it just sit for a little while and it goes away. No need to freak out lol

However, I have had issues with it messing up the front (scuff marks around the front camera and speaker, and nicks on the actual screen under the screen protector.)

this happened to my ipod touch. NEVER buy otterbox. it left a circular impression around the apple logo. had no clue it would damage what it was supposed to protect. awful.
