I've got my black iP5 in an OB Commuter. I took it out of the case the other day and wiped the phone down with a microfiber and a spritz of iKlear. I noticed a ring around the back panel logo where the opening of the case rests.

The ring went away after the microfiber / iKlear treatment. I'm not sure if this ring will become permanent after long term use of this case. It may become less of an issue after the case ages. I'm not worried about this as I really like this particular case.

I had a particular case etch the screen of my 3GS near the home button.

once again.. please show me the guarantee your phone wont be scratched from dust etc..

I bet their legal department is laughing even harder than I am.

Big difference in Otterbox not guaranteeing protection and a defective case itself responsible for the damage.

Faulty products happen - I'm sure they have liability insurance for such things.

I'm still waiting on Lifeproof for the iPhone 5.

I was thinking that the Lifeproof might also damage the black 5's if it has all those bumps like the Lifeproof 4S case had.

Was the Otterbox that damaged your phone made in China, Mexico or the USA?
Maybe you have a bootleg Otterbox.

Try this..

Mr clean Magic Eraser Bar.

Damp it with water lightly, and I mean lightly.. Barely any water on there, and try a light brushing over it and see how it goes.

Just FYI, Magic Erasers are micro abrasive and can rub off a finish. I'd try a solution like iKlear or QuickDetailer first.

My other box has been on since launch with no problems whatsoever. None of the markings as shown in this thread. Although my first one did have fraying problems.

That should work. Those things take anything off.

Is this china or USA commuter?

The only way I'd ever even bother with legal action is if you are a lawyer or you don't have to pay for it because otherwise it isn't worth your time.

this is why simply taking care of your phone is the best way to do it. All a case does is damage your phone. Debris gets stuck in there, stays in there for months at a time because no one hardly ever takes off their case, and then your left with a scratched up phone. Cases are pointless if you keep good care of your phone. Its really not that hard to not drop a phone.

I have the same case and everything is fine with my iPhone 5. Only difference is. My iPhone is white and I take the case off every two days to clean it.

Hey guys, I just joined this site and I see a lot of whining about Apple products. Due the smart thing, protect your phone any way you can. I have a 4s and it sits in an Otter box. No issues. I'm buying a 5 next week and looking into another otter box. Here's the steps to do, get a Zagg cover for the front and back. Cover the back to protect the aluminum finish, the front will be protected by the case itself. Problem solved. You may need a scalpel to trim off excess material but so what. I have another case I use, and it too has a brushed finish on the back. I covered it to protect against scratches. No problems.

Maybe you can buy a wooden box and put your phone in it, and use a padlock to secure the box. And don't forget to put lead bricks in it to make it heavier to prevent possible theft.

I convinced my 3 co-workers to get rid of their OtterBox the 2nd day they got their IP5's when I showed them these on my iPhone 5.

a clear/black bumper I got in eBay for $4.99 free shipping and this carbon fiber backing sticker/protector for $2.99 free shipping. *comes in Silver for white IP5. I also have a clear plastic screen protector I bought for $7.50 for a 20 pack.
OtterBox $35 - eBay case and carbon fiber $7

I got that same bumper case for 1.99 shipped on amazon. Now I just have to get the iPhone 5 lol. Sad story I know.

I had the white ip5 with otterbox defender, same marking on the phone as original poster, but is very hard to detect, I just use some diluted rubbing alcohol to wipe it and it is gone, I guess this will happen on any matte surface and it will show more on matte black, I bet if you press you finger on the black ip5 anodize surface for a minute, it will leave a print and won't wipe off.

 Do NOT do that. Magic Eraser's are like sand paper (very very fine grit mind you), but it is an abrasive. And considering all the post's about "scuff gate" you could very easily end up doing more damage.

BUT I will say. OP it sounds like you have done nothing to actually try and remedy the problem yourself. What have you actually done so far? Just use a dry microfiber towel? I see people making suggestions and you just saying no, or ignoring them. It very well could just be residue.

IKlear, Isopropyl alcohol, quick detailer, on a GOOD microfiber towel would be safe things to try.

Right now you sound like a spoiled brat. Why don't you try to fix the problem yourself first (even though it does look like Otterbox's fault), before throwing a temper tantrum.

Just wanna repeat my post 25 Sep. - https://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?p=15867733#post15867733

"Each new scratch will decrease resale value of your iPhone 5. Just imagine the situation, when one year later you have to sell your phone and buy new iPhone 6. Who is interested to buy your phone if it scratched like a hell?

You also cant prevent it with almost any kind of bumper or case. Small particles of sand and dust will act as abrasive and scratch anodzied surface under the case even more if you leave the phone naked. We have to see very soon a lot of complaints "My xxx case scratched my iPhone!!!".

Clearly, Apple did big mistake with wrong choice of materials. They have to pay for it very soon. Period."

Unless you properly care for it, of course.

You see, aluminum might be soft, but as long as you don't buy some idiotic monstrosity of a case to put the thinnest smartphone ever into, you're probably going to be fine.

Unless you're Lawlbringer, and use a microscope to find flaws to run crying to the genius booth with.

They didn't make any mistake with materials, and they won't need to pay for it. Because people will keep buying the iPhone 5 by the masses, and they'll do the same for the iPhone 6. Apple could make the iPhone 6 out of butter and baby tears and people would still buy it, whether you like it or not.

The fact? 999/1000 are happy with their iPhone 5, Apple Maps, and aluminum backings. That 1/1000 is usually a whiny **** who needs an audience to piss and moan to, and will do so, in order to get attention. Combine a few hundred of those 1/1000's? Boom. MacRumors forums are created.

Try iKlear, they sell it at Apple stores and other places with Apple stuff. I've used it on all my iPhones and MacBooks. It wont damage it.

I would be careful with windex- it has ammonia which may react with aluminium (probably not strong enough but who knows), and anything with alcohol which might remove the olephelic layer on the screen.

I would gladly pay ten times the price of a new iPhone for one made out of baby tears!

If you dont know that a case could scratch your phone then idk what to say. Yes a case reduces the chances of getting scratches, dings, etc and shock protection...but if you dont clean your phone and case every so often then dont be suprised when you see scratches and dings. Sand/debris is everywhere, your pockets, counters, everywhere...the debris/sand gets in your case and rubs against your phone so, You have to clean your case and phone every so often

----------

Bro just wipe it with some rubbing alcohol it will go away its just marks from the case.

Bought Otterbox defender for my 3GS used it 2years and clean it 1time...Phone was as brand new...Sold for 200bucks

Then got me a iPhone 4 also bought Otterbox defender and using it now for almost 2years and just open the case because of this thread to check what is status of phone if there is any scratches or what so ever...Nothing phone is same like it was 2years ago....

One trick that they dont tell you is when you buy Otterbox you should dust it with baby pouder....before you use it....

I also made photos of the phone and case after i open it so you will be able to see it as well :)

From my experience from my iPhone 4 otterbox ill definitely stay away from it. Left marks on my glass that wouldn't come off even with a bit of cleaning solution/alcohol. I cleaned the damn thing weekly too. I also saw the same case chew up the steel antenna band with marks on my girlfriends phone.

I'd still try cleaning it off with a microfiber cloth and a bit of rubbing alcohol. The coating won't come off...

Never had this problem and using Otterbox defender for 4years now on multiple phones.

Holy jesus, I'd be on the phone with Otterbox until I had a brand new iPhone 5 on my doorstep :eek::eek::eek: That's absolutely unbelievable. Another reason why Otterboxes are ****.

You clearly dont know much about Otterbox when you can say that :)

I've used O/B cases on my 3, 3GS, 4, 4S and now on my 5 and none of them have a scratch or other imperfection on them. I work for an electric utility company in and around generation and substations where my phone is exposed to bumps against steel structures as I navigate through these facilities. I wear my iPhone on my belt in the O/B holster and through the years it has been bumped hard enough to eject it from the holsters on several occasions without damage. I've found the O/B i5 holster holds the phone far more securely than previous models and so far my i5 hasn't been "bumped" out of the holster. I remove my phone from the O/B on weekends and leave it naked carrying it in leather Nutshell holster.
