I seem to remember everyone saying ip4 looked ugly and horrible before it came out. Let's just wait and see!

I just want to say that when the iPhone 4 pics first leaked, there was a huge howl about how ugly it was.

i never thought it was ugly, but i was very disappointed in it's design. so much so that i refuse to upgrade until the next redesign.

I was going to say something similar. Since all the best selling smartphones from the past 5 years all have 3.5" screens, I am not sure where the notion of monstrous 4"-4.3" devices are the sweet spot.
note, you said "past 5 years". we're talking about 'modern' phones, not 5 year old designs.
4" is far from "monstrous", don't exaggerate. and you must have missed this.

If Apple does increase the size of the screen in a future iPhone (and I hope they do), I think they will do it right and not try to somehow cram the screen onto the existing form factor. That would inevitably cause compromises which would hurt the overall functionality of the phone. I'm confident, though, that Apple won't do that.

Introducing the iPhone 5. Now featuring the A5 and an 8mp camera. As far as design goes, its a marginal antenna redesign at best.

I would rather have the iphone 4 design but with a 4" screen and 8mp camera. The 3.7" screen doesn't seem like much of a change but might work.

I like the look of the Iphone 4 the volume and mute button are much better than the cheap ones in my Ipad1. My 3GS is getting long in the tooth its time for a new one and I'm tired of waiting.

Former Engadget editor Joshua Topolsky has revealed information on the upcoming iPhone 5. Topolsky reiterates from his previous Engadget report that the phone is to be completely redesigned, and that it looks “more like the iPod touch than the iPhone 4.” The new phone will be thinner and have a "teardrop" shape which goes from thick to thin, similar to the MacBook Air.

Man, why does everybody insist on reinventing the wheel constantly?
Personally, I think the design of the 3GS is perfect as it is ergonomically correct unlike the iPhone 4 design!

Tear Drop Design? Why on earth would anybody find that remotely appealing in a phone? Ergonomically speaking that throws the proportioning off balance and at that point it would certainly not be ergonomically correct or appealing to any degree!

Also what is this obsession with constantly making it thinner? More robust hardware in a smaller form factor means "higher" Temperatures and decreased battery life!

I was disappointed in the iPhone 4, but continue to use it because I had given my sister my 3GS. I much prefer the iPod Touch/3GS design to the 4. Between the antenna and proximity sensor issues, it's been a long year.

If the iPhone 5 ends up looking like this I am going to pickup an iPhone 4 bad antenna design and all. That thing is ugly.

I seriously doubt it would happen. From what I can see, Apple's products are all pretty symmetrical and... well clean. Very clean. I have the blackbook right now in front of me and from time to time I'll just stop and marvel at how amazing it looks. FIRST black matte electronic I have ever owned.

uhh yeah.. Fugly.

The bezels need to be symmetrical due to the ergonomics while in landscape mode. Could both bezels stand to be slightly smaller? Perhaps, but not disproportionately.

Also, a Home Button with Gesture Area? Are you kidding? What's the point? The entire screen is a gesture area! Why do you need to make a large, ugly home button for redundancy in gesture input? Ridiculous.

In the article you linked, ThisIsMyNext says explicitly that it is a mock-up at random, but based on rumors received by them on the next iPhone 5. I would say that a review article is a must.
;):apple:;)

I'm so glad about the update saying that the rumor is not true: 3.7 inches diagonal is too small. 4.0 inches is the optimal compromise for the future. Get rid of the ugly bezel and the phone has the same footprint as the current 3.5 one. I fear Apple has too stupid managers to realize it now (just like it took them years to realize there was a market for the Macbook Air), but they'll realize it next year.

I think it looks awesome

And I hate the iPhone 4 design - just waiting to break, IMO and a downgrade from the iPhone 3 design which was indestructible

How is an edge-to-edge screen going to be any stronger than the iP4 Design which has a metal band around the edge?

In the end, the iPhone 5 will like be this:

1. It will look like a "thicker" 4G iPod touch, and backing will be grey colored due to the use of LiquidMetal for the backing.
2. Will get totally new antenna design that is not susceptible to the "grip of death" signal loss issue.
3. Will get a new 3.7"-4.0" touchscreen that goes all the way to the edge of the phone.
4. Will of course use the A5 CPU found on the iPad 2.
5. Will likely get a new Qualcomm or Broadcomm "universal" cellphone chipset, which supports GSM and CDMA now and supports LTE with a software/firmware update.
6. Will use 512 MB of RAM (768 MB if it could be packaged properly).
7. Will stay with 16 and 32 GB of flash memory storage for packaging reasons, unless Apple can get the latest flash memory to allow for 64 GB storage.
8. Will support Bluetooth 4.0.
9. Will include transceiver for near-field communications (NFC). NFC transceiver fully compatible with the Sony-developed FeliCa standard, very important for Japan, South Korea and Hong Kong, where NFC transactions through FeliCa compatible cellphones and pass cards are common.
10. Will still retain iPod dock 30-pin connector, though will include adapter for Micro USB connection charging (primarily for iPhone 5's sold in the EU).

people shouldn't fully judge a product until they hold it in their hands.

I don't think apple wants to go thinner than the iPhone 4.

The iPhone 4s back plate is what, 2mm of non-functional, fragile thickness? If they wanted it to be thinner, they could have used any other material and it'd have eliminated a mm+ off the overall thickness of the device.

I remember them saying the 4s design was driven by having to maximize the internal space to squeeze everything in. In that light, I'm not going to complain about the 4s design. I'm just waiting for some components to shrink again, so they can bring the iPhone back to the same clean minimalist ergo design standard of the models that preceded it. ...and everything else they make.

The edge to edge screen would be nice but I don't like the thin teardrop design.

On another note, I was at a restaurant and overheard a guy at the table next to me tell his father that the new iPhone is coming out in September. I'm not sure what he does for work but the way he stated that seemed odd to me.

Take this for what you will.
