people shouldn't fully judge a product until they hold it in their hands.
:apple:

Yes and people should not praise a product before they hold it in there hand either!

I know quite a bit about aesthetics and proportion in design in conjunction with ergonomics.

I will render my expert opinion in this field and say that the tear drop design of proposed iPhone in the picture is not aesthetically pleasing in proportion, nor will it be so in function either!

In the end, the iPhone 5 will like be this:

1. It will look like a "thicker" 4G iPod touch, and backing will be grey colored due to the use of LiquidMetal for the backing.
2. Will get totally new antenna design that is not susceptible to the "grip of death" signal loss issue.
3. Will get a new 3.7"-4.0" touchscreen that goes all the way to the edge of the phone.
4. Will of course use the A5 CPU found on the iPad 2.
5. Will likely get a new Qualcomm or Broadcomm "universal" cellphone chipset, which supports GSM and CDMA now and supports LTE with a software/firmware update.
6. Will use 512 MB of RAM (768 MB if it could be packaged properly).
7. Will stay with 16 and 32 GB of flash memory storage for packaging reasons, unless Apple can get the latest flash memory to allow for 64 GB storage.
8. Will support Bluetooth 4.0.
9. Will include transceiver for near-field communications (NFC). NFC transceiver fully compatible with the Sony-developed FeliCa standard, very important for Japan, South Korea and Hong Kong, where NFC transactions through FeliCa compatible cellphones and pass cards are common.
10. Will still retain iPod dock 30-pin connector, though will include adapter for Micro USB connection charging (primarily for iPhone 5's sold in the EU).

God, I hope not. I don't really want my screen going right to the edges, means I'd have to hold it very gingerly to keep from my hands accidentally hitting the screen on the side (can't even wrap my fingers around just a little bit meaning I get a much less secure grip on the phone). And I think it's important not to make the phone bigger, I'll take the phone size as is with screen as is over increasing the size for a bigger screen.

More RAM would always be nice so that would be a disappointment. That would actually make me upset if they didn't at least increase the storage space this time around. They already let it stay at the same size for the last update and that was a major disappointment when the 4 came out. To let it stay the same for 2 years?! And yes, I want more space! I don't even have a large music collection but my apps are starting to take up space and I like the idea of being able to have them with me, not having to pick and choose which ones I want to stay on the phone. Especially since if you take them off the phone you lose all data with the app. For some apps that's kinda important.

I'm not sure I'd like a metal backing from an aesthetic POV... it looks kinda tacky. Well I suppose it would be ok if the metal backing is similar to same colored as the front (I think it looks funny to have drastically different colored front than back) and that color is black (just cause black makes a better frame for a screen than any other color, especially any light colors). Or if the whole phone was cased as the dark colored metal. But, would that work considering it's a phone and you gotta have the antenna be able to get signal (I thought they had to put a black plastic cap on the back of the original iphone cause of that?)?

I think my biggest objections to your predictions though is the small/no bezel on the sides to accommodate the bigger screen (honestly, I think the current size is a great compromise between usability and being a good size for a *phone*) and your prediction that they won't increase the storage space (*again*. At 2 years since the last increase they really need to do that at this point).

"expert" opinion, eh?

Most of your post was a very cool guess -- certainly more realistic than some of the ones on here. However, my guesses is that neither of the ones I quoted above will happen. _Maybe_ a 3.7" screen (with the accompanying loss of resolution), but no larger. And not to the end of the screen, for ergonomics + durability issues. I'd say a definite no to the USB, as the EU does NOT require it, and Apple isn't a fan of ports ;-)

i really hope it has at least a 4.0 inch screen

Mark my words. It'll take Apple until 2012 to figure out that the 3.5 display is too small and that anything under 4.0 inches is. Apple is always lagging behind common sense 2-3 years because they have rich and lazy hardware design management who don't think. Look at the fugly bezels around the iPhone, iPad and all the Macbook Pro's and Air's. They really could be used in an encyclopedia as the definitions of unpractical and therefore bad design.

My 13.3" Macbook Air could house a 15.4" monitor without changing its footprint. My friend's 11.6" Air could house my 13.3" display without changing anything else about it, making it the ultimate road warrior.

But what does Apple do? They add this ridiculous tapering to make the Air "seem" thinner than it already is, thereby making it impossible to put in displays that fill the entire footprint of the laptop and are practical.

Going away from the Air, who wants heavy fragile glass panels on their laptop screens or phones? Nobody in their right mind. It's ridiculous on a mobile device, and they're going to phase it out, but they have too many established brainless guys in their management who can't admit their mistakes and keep clinging to the stupid design ideas until it becomes blatantly obvious that it was stupid, years later.

Also, that black fat bezel idea on all your products was wrong and you should get over it Apple. Just get rid of it. Nobody wants a bezel when they can have a larger display instead.

The only reason this company can still compete is that nobody else has the balls and/or money to start a serious competitor using UNIX-based OS.

Sarcasm or idiocy? The world may never know. My guess is the latter.

Um, when the screen is something you look at, how it looks counts for practicality. I like the black bezel around my screen on my MBP, it helps make what my screen is showing nice and sharp (how you frame a picture really does matter in how it looks). It's a big reason I prefer the macbook pro over the macbook (white is not a good screen frame as it doesn't bring out colors as well in general. Since screens vary their pictures you do want a neutral color but black serves a better neutral color than white as it brings out colors better where white tends to "fade" them).

You obviously have no sense of aesthetics if you think that stuff does not matter (and as I said, aesthetics count for practicality when we are talking about something designed to be *looked* at). An edge to edge screen would look not so great cause you have nothing to frame it with. Without that frame, you are left with whatever is behind the computer framing your screen (which will only look good accidentally and on an off chance).

Don't speak for everyone, I do want my black bezel thankyouverymuch (already proved you wrong with your nobody wants a bezel. Sorry, but I'm some one and I do want a bezel).

As for use on the iphone you still need some bezel to be able to get a good grip on the phone... or do you want to have to hold it with the tips of your fingers so they don't accidentally wrap even a little bit and do inputs you didn't mean to do? Same thing with the ipad (even more so as you have to hold it with two hands so you have to have a grip area somewhere). That bezel serves a purpose.

Not to mention I'd be curious what an engineer would say on what is needed to mount that screen (I'm sure you have to have the product be a little wider than the screen for mounting purposes alone).

I think Apple did a great job with the bezel on the MBP. It's not too thick (cause that can be bad too aesthetically as well as wasting space) but it frames the screen perfectly.

I totally respect your opinion and see your point, yet personally disagree based on the criteria of practicality. I take photos and videos semi-professionally and am perfectly happy with the much thinner bezel on my HP 30" IPS display (and with the fact that it doesn't have an ultra-reflective glass cover).

Good design choices are timeless. I bet that in 15 years there will be no more glass windows on laptops and bezels won't take up more than 10% of the display area. Time will prove me right or wrong.

Just because you disagree doesn't mean I'm an idiot. However you're a loser for calling me that way just because you can hide in anonymity.

Nope, there are plenty of people who I disagree with. The fact that every one of your statements is absolutely rooted in fantasy makes me believe you're just trolling people. In fact I'm almost certain of it. The whole line about "hiding in anonymity" locks it up for me.

If it aint broke dont fix it

Honestly why mess with something so good? The iphone is great and fiddling with it will only mess it up. keep it the same with minor changes only.

Just a brief opinion. I don't think this mockup is accurate at all.

The first question that came to mind was, where do you attach the 30-pin connector?

You've got barely enough surface on the current iPod touch as it is. Any less and it becomes way too breakable. This just won't work IMO (unless they're also planning to redesign the connector/location....? of course, knowing Apple, that's always possible).

Maybe they're looking at options for thinning it, but this 'teardrop' form seems a bit too extreme given other considerations. I think this is a nice concept sketch and nothing more...

"Update: We've received a tip (that we believe is reliable) that this redesigned iPhone 5 report is untrue."

Really

/Sarcasm

Lol at all the complaining. Apple could make whatever they want and everyone will buy anyway and call it the next perfect most amazing must have revolutionary thing.

Truckloads of shattered glass pieces & a consumer reports non-recommendation due to reception issues would both say that the current iPhone is far from great.

In fact, looking at it objectively, the iPhone 4 is one of Apple's worst industrial design blunders in recent history. Any other company would've had serious egg on it's face over the "antennagate" situation.

The Last iPhone --- and the coolest!

It will be made of one solid block of ceramic similar to that used to make knife blades.

It will be nearly indestructible.

It will have no openings.

It will connect entirely wirelessly.

It will recharge inductively.

It will be assembled, laser-sealed, ground, and polished to perfection.

The "speakers" and "mics" will consist of zones that are shaped, from the inside, to optimal radius, thinness, flexibility, to provide maximal acoustic response while maintaining excellent structural integrity.

It will have no home button or any other buttons.

The *entire* front and back faces will be S/W driven screens.

It will laser-project several screens simultaneously; including virtual keyboards & control pads (these onto the table top through the edge projector - nicely keystone corrected), etc.

It will have a smoothed edge surface for aesthetics and ergonomics; Ive will be bound and gagged, comfortably, in a nearby holding home.

It will track Steve Jobs, but not you.

It will drop the occasional call ... on purpose.

It will have an Apple logo throbbing slowly, dimly on it's back.

We will hover in line to buy it ... even though it is free.

We will love it.

It will purr when stroked ( I now copyright the purring when stroked application --- hands off poachers!).

It will be called "Monolith" (My copyright and trademark as well.) with or without "i" prefix; also just "Lith" or iLith.

A white version, much delayed, will be called "Spirit" (Yep! My copyright).
With or without "i" prefix.

THUS SPAKE GOODDOG on 25 April 2011

Looks okay, but sharper edges would it make it harder to hold?

I like my current iPhone 4, the fingers rests on the edges as there are no sharp edges.

One thing I'd like the most for new phone is better battery life. iPhone 4 cant mach my old gsm phone. Touch screen phones are battery hogs.
