lets see

lower clock speed (probably)
less ram
smaller screen (not 720 either)
no removable storage
no removable battery
no nfc
no customization
no custom roms
no smart stay
no pop up player
..........

Im just going to stop now. I think the point is made.

None of those things make or break a phone. The clock speed and ram mean nothing with iOS has a much smoother and more responsive feel to it. The screen size is personal preference, and 720 is not really necessary on this size of a screen. The high pixel density and aspect ratio are the more important numbers. Removable storage and batteries aren't really that big of a plus. If you truly need more space, get the larger capacity phone. But with many things being integrated with iCloud, there is less and less need for more physical storage. If you need more battery life via an extra battery, there are options for the iPhone as well. NFC is not supported widely enough for it to be a requirement for all new phones, and Passbook makes up for that anyway.

The rest are nice features and some can be added through jailbreaking, but they're for convenience mostly. Multitasking and switching between apps is easy enough.

I don't really see what people are complaining about - we've reached a point where no new phone release (be it iOS, Android, WinPhone8) is going to have as much impact as the early models did. We're now on incremental updates and the reality is that those that were used to the fairly dramatic model updates are going to have to get used to that not being the case for a good while.

I like the design of the iPhone 5, I liked the design of the 4 and 4S. In fact, I've just taken advantage of the onset of used 4S models that appeared quite recently and, just a few hours ago, bought a 64GB 4S, and will mostly fund that by selling my rather unwanted Galaxy S3 (it was an interesting experiment but it's just not for me). The 4S just makes more sense to me at the moment in terms of features/cost (the 4S gets all the same iOS6 features as the 5) but I certainly would consider the 5 if the prices drop a little.

To be fair it is an amazing phone and it is significantly upgraded. The real problem, for me, is that it is soo also the same. The operating systems is fairly.flawless but so boring and the lack of customization sucks. I have been on an HTC one X for about a week with the idea of return exchange for the iPhone 5 depending on what it turned.out to be and I can't go back to iPhone. The HTC one X is very very nice and if u sit it next to the iPhone 4s it looks much more current. I'm not hear to dump on iPhone as I'm an apple share holder and love the company, but it has been too long to not have widgets and customization. I also think the screen size ,camera and thinness to be a given these days.

Neither does crap like Siri yet iphone fans touted that like it was the most amazing thing ever. When iphone has something no other phone has, its amazing and revolutionary. When another phone has something the iphone doesn't, no one needs it  Gotta love the fanboys.

If you don't like the phone, then go buy another device. No one is forcing you to buy the iPhone 5. Topics like this deserve to be in the wasteland.

thats why they had the band, had to do something to make it seem like it was worth while or no one would go to next years event.

then don't buy it, get a different phone. stop complaining

Where is the complaint in that statement?

"thats why they had the band, had to do something to make it seem like it was worth while or no one would go to next years event."

I think your pro apple stance is effecting your reading comprehension.

He wasn't talking to you. Haha

No I was writing to the OP. I have no stance on anything, especially one company vs another. I just find it ridiculous he's complaining about it this much, it's really not necessary - go get a samsung or microsoft phone. The philosophy is quite simple: you don't like something, don't buy it. I don't like the MacBook Air, so I'm not going to buy it. On top of that not to get on anyones nerves, I'm taking the high road and not going into the MacBook Air forum telling people what I think of it.

Also, I can read just fine.

This is the most Sensible post to have seen about the iPhone5 or smartphones in general.

so are the apple enthusiasts still going to be duped by apple's shrewd business strategy of less innovation + maximized profits ?

iP5 will sell like hotcakes, no doubt. Too bad iOS is just crap.

It might be better, but we want NEW. The iphone 4 is a work of art. But we want something new, this is just another version of the 4 that we are stuck with for 2 more years.
This.

The thing is, the effort Apple would have to do to left a non customer in awe with the iphone5 is much smaller than a customer that already has a 4 or a 4S. I have a 4 and to buy this new one iphone5 the only thing that would convince me would be a brand new design. I recognize that this new iphone 5 is very good but for me isn't worth the upgrade from my iphone4. My 4 already has retina, i love the design, takes very good pics etc
Ultimately, the thing that defines what is a new product, it's exterior aspect, the design and iphone 5 is not that different from 4 and 4S so...

I agree, disappointing and won't stop me from getting a Samsung Galaxy3 with Android Jelly Bean.

Seriously, what was Apple thinking? Since two years they haven't done any real innovation on the iPhone hardware nor iOS software.

Google is taking off and Jelly Bean make the iOS6 look pale in comparison.

I have to agree with the OP.
Literally nothing introduced was a surprise.

and no iphone launch going forward ever will be. get used to it.

why does there have to be a surprise for the phone to be a worthwhile offering? LTE alone is worth the price of admission in my book.

they waited a year for it to come to iPhone users. not impressed.

per usual, Apple customers are manipulated at will at the whim of a very controlling corporation that doesn't give their customers a very basic ingredient when it comes to consumer products: Choices.
