iPhone 5 is the best phone in the world

- 8 HOURS BATTERY LIFE while BROWSING LTE all DAY. Name me an Android phone that can browse 8 hours on LTE. YOU CAN'T.

Untested claims. How soon we forget that they made the same huge ass claims about the 4S and those claims were quickly found to be untrue in real world use. Remember battery gate? I call BS that you can talk for 8 hours straight on it and not kill the battery.

the iPad lived up to it's battery expectations. they're using updated chips from qualcomm and using Cortex-A15 based SoC so I believe their claims.

LOL, no way it will last 8 hours on LTE only with a 1440 battery. Please go buy one so we can see your whining that will follow.

nobody knows how much capacity the battery has. what's with folks making up their own specifications? lol.

I am not taking apple's word on battery life.

When Apple said my iPad was going to get ten hours of battery life, they really meant it. When they said it was eight hours for my MacBook that I bought back in 2007, they meant it. Normally you wouldn't take a companies word on this, but I think Apple can be trusted with specifications on their products.

+1

I'm willing to bet actual money that the iPhone 5 will not be able to browse 8 hours on LTE. 8 hours of actual browsing? With that battery? I really doubt it. The battery in the iPhone 5 is only marginally better than the 4S (which sucks) and we are adding in a "bigger" processor and LTE to boot. Opening up a web page is not browsing. I'm sure once this thing hits next week the threads about the crap battery life will be piling up.

this argument was used back in 2008. update your arguments please.

and btw, it's a given amongst techies that the iOS app store has much more premium apps than android ecosystem. i use both ecosystems frequently.

It's amazing how few Android users can understand that concept. They are all too busy calling us iPhone users iSheep to realize that they are as much sheeps as iPhone users, if not more. I bought the Nexus 7 to play all the games I play on my iPhone except on a portable 7" screen. I was so excited for it. And then the Nexus 7 came. And then I realized how many quality apps that Google Play was lacking. And now I'm at 6d 21h on battery still with 20% battery left... lol. Yet any time I bring the quality apps up, I get some link to an article about how iOS apps crash more, or get some crap about how all the big apps are available. There is just no teaching them.

And trust me. If I could run iOS apps on an Android phone, I would have bought an Android phone years ago. I love everything about Android, including the hardware choices. I just can't stand the app selection.

So since nothing has changed in the eco system, and has actually gotten worse, then the argument is somehow not valid anymore? How does that work? Is that how sheep see things?

They advertise all the time how many apps are available. I would bet the number would be probably down to a third if you removed the pointless ones, the ones that duplicate functionality of other apps, the ones that are only there because the writer is hoping to get revenue from people clicking on the advertisements inside them etc.

Ok, I had to check myself and it seems I was a little off. I just did a search in the app store for "fart". Only in the iPhone section the are just under a thousand apps that match.

Is "Places that I have pooped" considered a premium app since it costs money?

It's the best phone in the world for me, and that's what matters.

I'm not sure why people are doubting the battery life claims. There's a reason Apple didn't add LTE support last year. The new A6 and Qualcomm chipset is why. They waited until they could deliver an LTE phone with decent battery life, just as they waited until 2008 to deliver a 3G iPhone. The new iPad was a different story since it's a bigger device, but even it is thicker than the iPad 2. This time around there were no compromises. We get a faster phone with a bigger screen that is lighter and thinner.

Job well done, Apple! Just next time, plug the leaks a little bit better. Use some of that lawsuit money to go after leakers. Knowing the new specs last week was one thing. Knowing them 2 months ago was entirely different.

Please read my other posts. I don't even have an android phone yet. I have had iPhones since 2007 but that doesn't mean I think there is a need for a thousand apps that make fart noises.

Surfing 8 hours on LTE? Don't you have something better to do with your life? Why would anybody do that on a phone screen? At least get an iPad.

My iPhone 4 seldom runs below 40% batt power. Long batt life is nice, but who cares about 1 hour more or less?

And the apps comparism is questionable too. Most apps are poor and seldom last more then a few Minutes on my phone.

It's not the number of apps, it's the quality of the apps that matter. Without a doubt quality apps are of higher quantity than in Android's ecosystem. And for tablet's it's even worst for Android. Many tech journalists from both sides of the ecosystem aisle admit to this.

You can keep using the number of apps as a benchmark, I certainly do not, nor has Apple in the last year or so. Even Google stopped the number of apps as a metric.

Also, if one is more of a gamer, than iOS ecosystem is by far the superior choice as it has a much more robust game selection than Android, particularly with tablets.

Yes we do. It was announced along with every other rumor of the iphone 5....that turned out to be 100% true!
You dont have to believe it if you dont want to. But you know what, .....Apple didnt tell you the battery size or how much memory it has because they dont want to post those things that will make the public mad when it isnt a big upgrade. However, they will come out soon enough.

Yea, because everyone needs 372 apps that make farting sounds.

From GooglePlay:

Quite a few pages there...

Really? It's on the current iP5 web page.

Sure on their webpage. I'm sure Google has a metric for that too on their website. I don't believe 'the number of apps' was used as a metric for the iPhone 5 announcement.

Furthermore, it's a given that more quality apps exist on the iPhone ecosystem than Android. Makes sense as it is easier to develop on the iPhone (due to less fragmentation), and iOS consumers tend to purchase apps more so than Android users.

Don't forget that battery life charts use different methods. For example:

Anandtech's battery life charts are created this way:

"The browsing tests happen at 200 nits and consist of a few dozen pages loaded endlessly over cellular or WiFi (depending on the test) until the phone powers off."

Apple's battery life tests are done this way:

"Internet over LTE tests were conducted over an LTE network using a dedicated web server. iPhone 5 browsed snapshot versions of 20 popular web pages and received mail once an hour."
Clever wording, but it's the same test they've always used. What they mean is, they use their own servers connected to their own in-house LTE test network, and access one web page every three minutes, in order to simulate casual browsing and slow reading on the best possible network situation.

--

One test is non-stop and getting five hours over LTE sounds amazing. The other is fairly slow and getting eight hours could depend more on the screen brightness than actual comms. So there's no way to do a valid comparison until an iPhone 5 is tested next to another LTE phone in the same situation.

LTE does not consume battery life any more than 3G. The reason why LTE phones have been so poor with battery life is because they needed two separate chips: one to handle voice services and one to handle the LTE data. So with two separate chips in use, naturally the battery will get drained quicker than a phone that is running 3G and voice on the same chip. Apple is using the MDM9615, which is the first Qualcomm chip to incorporate voice services and LTE on a single chip. Therefore, the fact that the phone has LTE capabilities will not negatively affect battery life. If anything, the advancements in technology will probably make the chip a more energy efficient chip than the older chips. That is why Apple claims 8 hours on 3G browsing and 8 hours on LTE browsing.

Additionally, if the CPU is truly based upon Cortex-A15, that will only help more as A15 is more energy efficient than A9.

So overall, Apple can very easily keep the battery life at the same level as the 4S, if not increase it. There is a reason why this is the first LTE iPhone, and it isn't just because they needed to catch up with Android phones. It's because they've been waiting for the MDM9615 for a long time, and it's finally available. Would Apple have released an LTE phone regardless of MDM9615 being available in order to catch up with Android? I would have put my money on it. They probably would have just kept the thickness and weight the same as the 4S, and added a much bigger battery.

Thanks for this caveat. We'll find out once it's out in the wild come Sept 21.

True, the number doesnt matter because most are crap...in both app stores. Android does however have many queality apps and many good ones that Apple doesnt have and of course vice versa so really it doesnt matter. The Apps shouldnt be a concern for choosing either.

However....... there are thousands of Apps in the Apple iTunes store that never get downloaded. Like 400,000 of them http://www.phonearena.com/news/400000-apps-in-the-App-Store-have-never-been-downloaded-says-report_id32943

I switched to the iPhone 4S 4 months ago after having 3 different android phones (htc Hero, GSI, GSII. They both have their advantages. Having said that, I am PROBABLY going to stick with the iPhone for now, but I do hope really hope google makes a maps app for iOS 6, since I use that every single day (mainly for public transportation)-if they don't, I will have to see, unless apple's map app gets almost as good.

I do love android, but I admit I spent waaaay to much time on it-custom roms, adding features, removing features, etc. I just couldn't handle doing all that, and took so much time out of my day on countless forums. That is the one thing I really love about the iPhone, is that after you jailbreak it (which I did), there really isn't that much you can do.

Google + Apple=best of both worlds!

Plus, the content of the web page matters. A desktop version of CNN.com may load up a lot of different elements, and from different servers, requiring more power. A "popular website" like google page, takes significantly lower processing.

What all of this means that all of manufacturer claims are more or less null and void until it's real world tested.

And to the OP:

And as far as battery performance, my Evo 4G LTE (Sprint's rebrand of HTC One X), lasts day and a half with moderate to heavy usage. Few hours of videos, few hours of browsing, bunch of emails/texts, and so on. I am sure iPhone 5 will be similar. Screaming "ZOMG BEST PHONE EVAR!1!!1!one", and trying to put down other real world tested phones, before you can get to try it yourself is simply idiotic.
