Doesn't anyone find this sad? people literally camping out for a phone... Don't get me wrong I'm updating my 3Gs to a 32 iPhone 5 because I think its pretty damn slick but I also "need" a new phone. My phone has been over to Afghanistan 3 times and survived garrison in the Marine corps since it was released however I think I can wait a for my pre-order to get here and still be ok.

Thanks for your service MJ -- I can imagine its pretty strange to come back from OEF and see people in line for a phone. I was reading about poor kids in India today not getting enough food from corrupt politicians and feeling the same way (overfed, overprivileged, grateful).

We have a disease, and its the inability to keep things in proportion to each other.

That being said, I am going to go finish my grant to the DOD on traumatic brain injury in warfighters, and get in line. Its hard to explain, but there is still something fun about doing things like this. I used to wait in line overnight for tickets to a good show so we could get good seats. Not quite the same, but you understand - we don't really have a whole lot to share anymore, so why not something like a new phone release? The anticipation is great.

Welcome back, and enjoy your new iPhone5 - you earned it.

Just curious: does this ever happen for any other smart phone? Or do people only line up for Apple products?
I do not think there is much of a line for other phones but people did/will line up for new game consoles from Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo.

I got a full time job! I work 60 hours a week and I am camping out tonight! Got the day off for my first iPhone Launch date! :apple:

ur a special apple specie.

I'm going to the sprint store which is opening early to avoid the lines. But I don't see why soo many people on this message board sit in judgement of others.

If someone wants to go stand in line all night then more power to them. People work and bust their ass working and they have a right to spend their time and money on what they want

What I would love to see instead of an unboxing
Video is the video of someone from Mac rumors walking on water since most of you act like your soo perfect and soo judgemental.

Maybe people save a day of vacation time and use it for things like this?

Maybe they use that as an excuse when they have no job or no sense of direction?

I get enjoying a new tech toy. I do.
But these lines...I really hope these folks all do lots of volunteer work since they have so much time on their hands.

I hope that was tapped into your iPhone with one hand while the other ladled out soup for the homeless.

Whatever happened to live and let live? These lines aren't for me, but people should get their kicks however and wherever they can.

Dont suppose I'd have any luck as a walk-in some time late next week at any of the London stores would I? Wanted to grab an iPhone 5 before I go away in October :(

Hard to say, but I was in London on the day the iPad 1 came out, and I strolled in to the Regent Street store at around 2-2:30pm and picked one up in minutes.

I don't disagree that different people can enjoy different things in life. I once stood in line for a movie for 3 hours. But waiting in line for a phone.... it seems like a massive waste of time. It's certainly not the worst thing a person can do. I applaud them for not selling crack. Kudos.
But I mean, come on. Let's be real. This is just silly. We can all agree on that.

Hey guys I'm the iSheep in the front of the photo and all night long we were hearing the same lame jokes I've read in this thread. So original! To answer most questions: Yes, I do have a job. Yes, I do have a hot wife. Yes, I do have an iLife. Yes, I do have an iPhone 5.

I've never done anything like this before so I did it for the experience and dare say I enjoyed it. They provided us with the leather armchairs, outdoor heaters, security guards to protect us from drugged up hobos, served us food, water and Starbucks..

Some people should stop being sad losers on the Internet insulting people for their choice of phone or method of obtaining it. You do what you what, we'll do what we want.

BTW I'm loving the phone's speeds and the screen size feels really natural.

Waiting in line for Apple mobile products seems to be a cultural event among some parts of the populace.

It's a testament to how much Apple has managed to infiltrate the contemporary cultural zeitgeist. Even the trolls who find their way here are participating in this annual ritual it seems.

I, personally, have other ways of enjoying a few hours (or days) of downtime but who am I to criticize how other people choose to spend theirs?

Guys chill out! Camping out is always fun. Camping out with fellow geeks is AWESOME! I have my own business and am now an empty nester so I have a good deal of control over my free time. Something I earned through hard work and commitment to things bigger than myself. I think these little things (whatever we choose them to be) are what makes it all worth while. Fun is fun. The haters can hate, but we get the last laugh. Cheers :).

Always amazes me how stupid some people really are. Queueing through the night to buy a phone. At least they won't be queuing where I live because both malls with AppleStores in are closed and it's pouring down with rain right now.

It amazes me how stupid some people are putting up with the crowds at a concert instead of just listening to the music at home, but there are, obviously, a lot of people who like to do just that.

Isn't it wonderful that people have choices about how they spend their time? And aren't you a real dick for expecting everyone to be just like you.

Let me make it little better....

Employee: Sir, can I have today and tomorrow morning off so I can go wait in line for a cellphone?

Boss: Really!!! can you keep a spot for me too and call me when it get closer.

Employee: Sir, can I have today and tomorrow morning off so I can go wait in line for a cellphone?

Boss: No, you have to be here selling the phones just like all the other employees.

Now that there are pre-order options, I don't understand why so many would choose to literally camp outside a store...

There have always been pre-order options..at least since iphone3 (i believe). Just not as popular as now.

I did have a good time the first time I waited in the line for an iPhone, but it was just too long. The waiting in line is a young persons game, I am too old and can't afford an entire day of waiting in line.

You bring up some good points. I hadn't looked at it this way. I guess the whole idea is to have fun and enjoy yourself.

I sometimes wonder why people like you even bother coming on here. Is this where you come for some action when the Samsung forums have nothing new or relevant to discuss? I don't get it...

It's a pretty long wait between updates. They got to keep busy somehow after they've bored of of blinging out their rooted home screens.

Did it for the IPad 2. It was actually a lot of fun.

same here, a few of my friends and I waited in line, the mall were we waited the starbucks gave out free coffee and everyone was there for the same reason so it was fun and friendly and more like a gathering than a mundane line wait.

I made a few design friends in the process too

lol camping out all night. some people i swear.

your better off staying up late and pre-ordering instead of literally turning into a GS3 commercial. HAHA

some of you fanboys make the jokes wayyyyy too easy and its your own fault.

What I don't get is why people can't see that these Samsung ad's are utterly pointless.

They're not selling their product on it's merits, and at the same time they're insulting the very people they want to attract to their brand. Why the hell would I want to switch to a Samsung when I know the company thinks I'm a thick "iSheep"? I mean, imagine Burger King mocking McDonald's customers by saying, "Hey, come be a fat bastard at our place instead"!

And again, they can't just show us their product working, what it does, elegantly over 30 seconds? They need to hint at Apple, in fact this proves they NEED Apple, period, to get their product mass attention.

The fact remains that without Apple being a point of reference in these ads, far less people will talk about the ad and thus the phone itself.

A complete failure. Sums them up though.

Heh, I still think it's crazy how so many people do this. I understand waiting a few hours if it's something you really want, but these people camp for days. Are they using sick days or what? It's not like you can't just preorder and have it sent to your doorstep on day one.

I seriously want to drive around town and see how many people are lining up at their local bestbuy or apple... im actually excited for them lol :)
