After the media event, Apple allowed the attendees to use the new iPhone 5 in a hands on area. Many of the early impressions seem to be focused on how light and thin the new iPhone feels. Despite the decrease in weight, the iPhone 5 appears to be sturdy due to its aluminum design.

Here are a roundup of some of the early impressions:

TechCrunch
- "Build quality is quite nice and the solid aluminum is quite unique and quite solid. Hopefully this will reduce some damage if it falls on a hard surface."

Telegraph.co.uk
- "The biggest change, literally, is the larger screen. Here, I'm thankful that Apple opted not to go wider. Samsung's Galaxy S3 is too big for my taste and I think Apple is right to say that the width of the iPhone is right for the average hand."

Slashgear
- "Gripping it, your thumb is able to navigate the full length of the display without stretching, just as promised, and while it's undoubtedly a light handset it doesn't feel delicate."

Engadget
- "Much like the speed increases between the iPhone 4 and 4S (and before that, the iPhone 3G vs. iPhone 3GS), they won't take you by storm right away. But, use it for half an hour and you'll have a hard time going back to a slower chip. The transitions are smoother, switching between apps is a bit quicker and everything just generally feels incrementally faster."

Anandtech
- "The phone feels very thin and light (obviously), and the improvement in performance is very noticeable compared to the 4S."

They shot a nice video showing the speed of the device and features:

My heart is yearning for the black one!!!

Despite it being called iPhone 5.

Every version I've preferred the black one...except this one. I think the White one is the superior looking one this time around. Reasoning...I think the silver back and sides will show less scratches therefore you can go case-less or even just a small bumper around it.

I feel just the opposite. Fell in love with the white 4S, but I think the white iPhone 5 looks weird.

Finger stretching is a big one for me. I don't like bigger screens due to have to stretch out fingers, but if it works that your finger will reach everywhere, ok. But still 3.5" would have still been better.

That iPhone looked so much faster in the video! Way more of a difference than 4->4S. It also looks like the animations were sped up like in ifakeclockup. Anyone else think so?

Videos have always been prettied up to make it seem much more impressive. I am sure Apple did shortened sequences in that video.

I wonder if they've reverted back to the extremely scratchable exposed Apple logo found on the original iPhone through 3GS. I really like how it sits behind the glass on the 4/4S and looks as good as day one.

The all black design is sexy! It looks business and cool. I will buy it!
Only thing missing is a black business skin on iOS to match..

I've always had a black one, since the iPhone 3G in 2008, but went with white last year for the iPhone 4S only because there was no redesign and I wanted to have something that looked new and different. While I do like my white iPhone 4S, I have to say that the darker antenna on the new iPhone 5 looks great with the black model. It just seems more sleek.

Hmm, I actually noticed quite a large speed increase when I upgraded from the 3 to the 3GS.

Did they mention anything about the unlocked being available at launch?

Actually, Sir Jonathan told us they are using al-u-MIN-e-um in this product. ;)

Yikes!

the new connector alone makes me really want this :D

(I hate the present one)

I waited through the 3G. But I could use one of these for 2 bills.

What time on Friday will Apple Allow Pre-orders

Does anyone have an idea what time Apple will allow the pre-orders for the iPhone 5 on Friday? i.e. Will it be midnight (eastern time or Pacific time)? Won't to know so I can set my alarm and get my order in before shipping delays start.
