Just got mine replaced yesterday for it. No questions asked. The right side of the button had the more prominent issue. I use the mophie helium so if I'm not able to hit the power button with a slight tap, it becomes annoying since it's a bit recessed compared to a normal case

Recently I've been having a problem with my iPhone 5 power button.

It has become unresponsive when I press it. Sometimes it takes two to three presses on the button before the screen turns on/off

The strange thing that I noticed was that if I press to the right of the power button it always fails but works if I press on the left side.
Not sure if I'm making myself clear.

Is anybody else having problems with the iPhone 5 power button?

It's not a problem, it's a characteristic of an old fashioned mechanical button.

I've had several fail. If you're lucky it happens within the warranty period.

If not, you pay. Apple loves our money :D

I've had this happen to me, and got it replaced at the apple store.

The issue seems SO wide-spread, that I am beginning to think it is more of a defect than people breaking it due to carelessness.

I never dropped my phone and it still happened. It was however, jailbroken.

From what I am understanding, it is the flex cable of the iphone 5's power button that is malfunctioning, causing only the left half of the button to work. People have said that once they replaced the flex cable, the button works again.

In terms of the case people have been using, it has ranged from no case, to otterboxes... So I don't believe the issue is caused by the case.

Either the flex cable is seriously flawed, or the jailbreak is causing some kind of issue over a long period of time to the flex cable and destroying part of it.

Just curiously, anyone in this thread who had this same issue... did you have your phone jailbroken?

Jailbreak is software.
Standby button is hardware.
Don't be illogical.

I had the same problem so i called Verizon they sent me a New phone the next day.

Had this issue back in December with my 9 week old iPhone 5. Took it to the Apple store and they explained that they cannot repair the sleep/wake button so immediately offered a replacement.

5 months later, and my sleep/wake button has broken again! Have booked an appointment to hopefully get it changed again!

Out of curiosity, in a few months time when some iphones will be >1 year old, if the button breaks, will the Apple store replace it free of charge even if its out of warranty and you don't have AppleCare as it's clearly a hardware issue?

I had my iPhone 5 swapped by apple in store for this issue. They said it was very common.

No, hardware issues are not covered out of warranty.

Sometimes they do. I had my iPhone 3GS replaced out of warranty because of GPS failure.

Only:

- In exceptional circumstances
- If it was a known problem which a quality program was released for

Remember apple used to be much more lenient with OOW swaps.

I have the same problem

Iphone 5 16gb Black

I have this exact problem, its getting worse, and now I can only use the button if I press it on a specific area on the left side of it.

I got my phone from Carphone Warehouse on an Orange contract.

Do I take this to the Carphone Warehouse, or to any Apple Store with my box and receipt will they replace it?

Thanks!

Go straight to the Apple store. Your warranty is valid from the serial number on the device.

One more question - to get a new replacement do I need my original box and everything for my old phone?

Thanks.

same here, i've to press the power button for like 4 times, really annoying.
plz help.

There really isn't much that can be done. Either it works or it doesn't. If it's still under warranty you should call Apple to get your iPhone repaired or replaced.
