Went to the store to get the power button fixed and they replaced my phone. While I was there I bought another phone for my daughter and I was in and out of there in 20 mins.
I have never seen customer service so well performed with about 100 customers standing in their store. I was taken care of and out of there so quick I couldn't believe it. I'm sold on Apple now.

My iPhone was replaced today at the Apple store. The whole process took less then 10 minutes.

I'm not sure if the problem with the power button was caused by a magnetic case I was using. The magnet was very close to the power button and the fault did occur after I started using the case.

No more magnetic cases on my iPhone, it's not worth the risk

Did you have to have a warranty on the phone or did they just replace the defected phone?

Just started having the same issue as well. I thought it was my new Mophie case causing the issue. But like others explained. Pressing the left side is more effective than the right side.

nah, having a magnetic case is not the cause. however, having a case (any case other than a soft silicone) might be. that seems to be the common theme here.

i am reasonably confident this issue will be resolved with the 5S but in any event, I have the extended warranty so it'll have to do for the next 2 years (that's when I am eligible for a hardware upgrade). Then again, if Apple decides to give us what most of us want [a 5 inch iPhone] then I might just sell mine and buy the iPhone 6 which is the earliest I would assume Apple may launch one.

I first started noticing this issue back in March I think. I would hit the power button to turn off the phone with out paying attention and then notice shortly later that it was still on. It's gotten to the point now that the only way I can get it to work is to press it against something like a table as hard as I can. Lucky me, I was getting out of a car and didn't realize my phone was in my lap so the screen shattered and they wouldn't replace it. My 4 had the home button stop working after about 1.5 years, so it seems they are breaking sooner each go around.

That's ****** luck. I am not sure because you have a cracked screen but Apple will allow you to purchase a refub iPhone 5 if you return the one you have. The refurb is around $270 so it's not that bad...still cheaper than a new(er) device. Give it a shot.

Yeah if I remember correctly it's an out of warranty purchase for $220ish. Pretty dumb that they take the old phone though. I want to snap it in half so they can't reuse it, since they are making money and also getting a free phone to resell to make more money on.

i myself had this issue for a few weeks now it seems each time i have to press it harder and harder somtimes i smash it on the table.
i drop the phone a few times chip on the right bottom corner and scratch marks on every corner of the phone. yesterday i went to apple and they replace it without no question ask. it seems like this was a defective issue with the phone itself. i had mines jail broken but they was able to factory restore the phone without any issue and got replace my old one with a new one.
my warrenty expires next month and man am i lucky.
so if any of you guys have encounter this problem just slight a bit and its still under factory warrenty just go to apple and replace it instead try to deal with the hassle.

If anyone with a 5 has this issue, get it replaced before the 1 year!

My 4S button still works as it did out of the box. Is this a known 5 issue?

I started noticing the power button problem on my iPhone 5 about a month ago. It got progressively worse. It sometimes took a half dozen tries to get the button to register. Taking a screenshot using home and power was a crap-shoot that more often than not simply threw me out to my home screen.

I made a Genius Bar appointment and took my phone to the Apple store. I let the guy know I wanted to approve anything he did before he did it. He asked me if my phone was backed up. It was backed up to iCloud, but the backup was dated midnight the night before. He handed it back to me and I hit "backup now" and the backup finished in under 30 seconds. He then spent some time fiddling with the power button with a spudging tool. He was pressing on the left, right, top, bottom and center of the button. He handed me my phone back and went to get me a new one from the back of the store. He then put my sim card in the new phone after I signed an agreement (no new 2 year term or anything like that). Once my new iPhone 5 was up and running, I logged in and started an iCloud restore. Once all my contacts and app icons were back, I wiped the old phone and handed it back to him.

This was very very painless. The only inconvenience was having to hang around the Apple store a bit longer waiting for the first iCloud restore to finish before leaving the area of the wifi. Of course app restore took a couple more days but all my data and settings were on the phone before I left the store.

That's very unusual. There is no in-house fix for the power button issue. If you were able to replicate the issue in front of him, there was no reason for him to fiddle with it....wasting your and his time. I suppose he was hoping to unstick the power button and then give the device back to you, only to have you return back again. I'd be pissed if that happened to me.

if your power button is unresponsive, or somewhat unresponsive and you are still within your 1 YEAR WARRANTY you can get a refurbished one over at apple for free of charge, just create an appointment.

He was not trying to fix it. He appeared to be confirming what was wrong. He mentioned that the switch on the outboard side of the button was no longer working. This is common with iPhone power button issues in that you must press the left side (closest to the center of the phone) to get the button to register properly. I would think there are 2 redundant switches and as soon as either of them closes, the other is ignored. When one is broken, the button becomes MUCH less responsive. When the second switch goes, you are out of luck completely.

I'm sure I did the right thing taking my iPhone 5 in because 1) it was almost a year old and almost out of normal warranty and 2) with one switch dead, once the second switch died, I would have NO power button at all!

I believe there is one of these switches under each end of the power button and when the "black dot" is gone from both of them you are done. Interestingly, this seems like the sort of problem that could be caused by dropping your iPhone. These "dome" switches have a small black plastic button that presses the switch when you press your iPhone power button. When the dot is missing (and I believe you might even be able to hear it rolling around inside your phone), the power button no longer reaches the switch dome and can no longer register a button press.

I found a youtube video on iPhone 5 power button repair and it confirmed another thing the Apple guy told me. When I asked if I could wait for the repair, he said the button is "part of the case." I didn't understand him until I found this video this morning. After removing the display, battery and motherboard, THEN you get access to the power button. The video begins with the display and battery already removed, then at 5:39 out of 5:57 you finally get access to the power button. Ouch.

If you say so....

in my case, I showed the Genius tech the issue, he replicated the problem and said this is very common. Within 10 minutes, I was out of there with a new iPhone5. The reason it took as "long" as it did was because it was very busy at that time and the supervisor was busy authorizing other replacements, which is normal protocol.

Exact same thing with me in the Covent Garden store in London. The replacement i got is in better condition then my original 5 was out of the box, it is flawless!!!

13 days out of warranty on this, and SOL...

They wouldn't budge, not on 13 days. My power button stopped working suddenly last night. So I'm stuck with the Assistive soft lock button, repairing it myself, or paying out of pocket full freight.

Lame all around. Trying to figure out what parts I'd buy to repair myself. Cable assembly? Or just the button?

1 month out of warranty in the UK

I'm in the UK and my iPhone 5 has just started this.

Although I'm out of Apple warranty, would I be able to use EU law to get my iPhone 5 fixed?

If not, where would I get a replacement button from in the UK (I can do the replacement myself)?

iPhone 5 top button not working

I just started having this problem this week. I took the phone to Apple to have them look at it, and was informed that the entire phone would have to be replaced at a cost of $250. The phone is 11 days out of warranty. I asked, repeatedly, if they would honor the warranty and stand by their product, and they denied any extension. So, now I have a defective phone with a year left before I can buy a new one.

Apple should issue a recall for this phone. It is a manufacturing defect that they are issuing new phones for those under the warranty. Very, very frustrating to not even be able to turn your phone on without plugging it in first, and to be stuck with that for a year (cause I can't afford a new phone!).

I was an Apple fanboy up until today. The Genius was arrogant, right from the start. This is not the Apple I used to know and love. This is corporate Apple. Like corporate Microsoft, with Verizon's notoriously bad customer service.

And yet 11 days out of warranty, I'm told to get lost for the same manufacturing defect. I've never been more upset with Apple than the evil side I saw today. Yes, the phone is out of warranty, but it is their manufacturing defect and they should stand by their product. The phone wasn't cheap, and it needs to last for the two years of the wireless contract. Frankly, the warranty on these defective units should be extended to two years so that no one is stuck with Apple's manufacturing mistake.

I bought my iPhone 5 in early November 2012. Around end of December, the lock button gradually stopped working. Apple replaced the phone. Replacement was fine until last week, and now the lock button is barely working at all.

This is just ridiculous. The major annoyance is I have to travel to another city because there isn't an Apple Store in Edinburgh.

Or maybe the major annoyance will be that the lock button will stop working 2-8 months from now and I'll be screwed because I'm out of warranty.

No you don't, you're still in warranty so call Applecare and they'll send you a replacement...

I have three options:

- Pay postage for Apple to ship another one to me (they take a hold on my credit card for the cost of a new phone), and I send mine back
- Post mine for free to Apple, and they'll send a replacement (phoneless for up to a week)
- Go to an Apple Store and get a replacement there and then

My iphone 5 power button has become cranky since a couple of days. Sometimes it does not work for many clicks and sometimes it works.

Will be going to apple service centre in Mumbai, India tomorrow and get my phone changed.

I also have apple care, so till October 2014...I'm covered :apple:

does anyone know what Apple will charge to fix this power button problem if your phone is past the 1 yr warranty. I don't have an Apple store nearby, but will be going to one in the next couple of weeks.

Update:

I went to apple service centre 2 days back in Mumbai, India. And was hoping to replicate the buggy power button issue. Luckily the 4-5 times the service center technician tried to press it, it didn't work every single time. :) so they are exchanging mine for a new one.

Unfortunately the 64 GB was not readily available on that day, so I will be getting one today. But 48 hrs is not bad to get a new one.

A friend of mine managed to get her iphone 5 - 16 GB. Exchanged on the spot as they had plenty in stock.
