This might be the most random reply you'll ever hear. My Nan lives next door, if I Pre-order the iPhone 5 on the website and put her address will she be able to sign for it? Or does that depend on the courier? Thanks!! It just I'll be at work and no-one will be at home. I know I'm not the only one but I was just wondering if this could be done?

You can fill out a form and put it on your door but it is up to the person doing the delivery.

Actually you log onto Apple.com once the order has shipped and they have an option where you can select to agree to "pre-sign" for the package and this allows the courier to leave the package at the address you are shipping the phone to.

In my case, I usually work from 8:30 to 5 and it's 6pm when I get home. Fedex was going to be delivering my iPhone 4S. Once I received the email notification from Apple that my phone had shipped, there was an option to click on a link in the email that took you to the Apple website that allowed to you give Apple and the courier authorization to leave the package in your mailbox or at the door without signing for it. By clicking on this box, you were basically signing for the package in advance and online. So as I said I did this for my 4S, when I got home, the small package was waiting in the mailbox for me. The package is so small it fits in most mailboxes and it's not left out on a porch in the open view.

Also, there should be no issues shipping to your "Nan" next door. Just make sure you using your address for billing and then your "Nan's" address for the shipping address. From there, everything is very smooth.

Thanks for writing all that but what I should of thought to do is get it delivered at work. That's what I'm going to do, then I can sign for it!! Also. Do you think Pre-orders will start at midnight in the UK or start at midnight in the US, so around 5am here??

Orders will start at 12:01am PST. So whatever timezone your in, add or subtract your time from the Pacific timezone. I'm EST, so that would be 3:01am my time.

when are you charged?

How does order processing work for the pre-orders? Does Apple charge you when you preorder, or when your iPhone ships? If I preorder but change my mind before it ships can I cancel the preorder?

You are not charged till you iPhone ships. In fact many reported last year having their 4S before they got charged, but then a few days later the charge appeared on their card. So if you don't see it right away or after you get your phone, wait a few days, don't freak out and think Apple forgot to take your money as they will take it out, it's a matter of when they do it.

What about authorizations -- have people reported that the funds were put on hold on their card (even if not actually charged)?

I've never heard of or seen an issue with this. Although I use my AMEX which never gets declined for a large purchase.

If you want to be safe, call your bank or card company and tell them you'll be making a purchase for $X of dollars in the next 48 hours and the charge will come from either Apple, Verizon, AT&T or wherever you will be buying your phone from.

Thanks for the info...I'm curious if there will be an immediate authorization, because although I'm making a payment to my card to cover the purchase, I'm not sure if the credit will be available at the time I pre-order -- so I would hate it if they tried to authorize for the whole amount and declined the card.

Hmm I'm wondering if it will be better pre-ordering from the Verizon website or the Apple website... Any thoughts guys? Sorry to hijack but this is the pre-order thread after all :D

Listen, i think most people here will tell you go with the apple website, that's why im going with the VZ one. Less people waiting in line, not to mention at&t and sprint subscribers will be attaching the apple site at the same time. From experience the apple site will crash for a few hours starting when pre-order open.

I know a lot of people looking to Pre Order through AT&T were wondering if it could ship to an address outside of the AT&T billing address.

I just got off the phone with AT&T Small Business Care, and they told me that you will have the option to enter in a shipping address.

If you want to be really safe, it probably would be good to have both the AT&T and credit card billing addresses match your shipping address, but the phone representative said that is not necessary.

I'm adding another line to the Verizon account, can I do that now in preparation (logic tells me know bc I would need to choose a phone in that moment etc) or is it really simple to add a line in the pre-order process? I have asked this before, but what can I say? I want to make sure im setting a 3AM alarm for SOMETHING!

Also, will I get my new # as soon as I pre-order? I just got a new job and dont want to put my old number (straight talk, so I can't transfer it to verizon) on ALL my insurance forms, etc.

thanks

really dont feel like waking up at 3. I think i'll wait until 5 after all the crazies have ordered :)

For those who have bought iPhones online and started a new carrier account at the same time, what was your total up front cost (not including what's charged on your first bill) -- is it just the cost of the phone(s) plus tax, or are there additional initial fees?

When i preorder do I have to pay the whole amount or is ot just like $50?

People have said that you are not charged until the phone ships, so presumably there would just be the one charge of the whole amount on the day of shipment.

I haven't seen any firm info on whether or not the authorization goes on the card right away, though.

Was thinking we should make a thread because the pre orders start this friday I guess this way we can keep track of how long it takes to ship and how soon it comes? Here's some basic info of the iPhone 5.

The world's thinnest smartphone.

Weighs 112 grams, 20% lighter than the iPhone 4S.

"The challenge is to make it better and smaller."

4-inch display, 1136x640.

In the US: Sprint, AT&T and Verizon will support LTE.

Canada: Rogers, Telus, Bell, Fido, Virgin.

8 hours of LTE browsing, 10 hours of video, 40 hours of music, 225 hours of standby, 8 hours 3G talk time.

Video is 1080p but with better video stabilization.

The front-facing camera is now 720p, backside illuminated with facial recognition.

Same pricing as iPhone 4S.

$199 for 16GB, $299/32GB, $399/64GB (with two year contract).

iPhone 4S is $99, iPhone 4 is free with contract.

Preorders start on Friday, shipping one week later.

It's actually not the worlds thinnest smart phone. One of the Droid RAZR's is.

But on the side note, anyone have any input on how fast they'll sell out? My upgrade isnt til October 10th and I'll be buying the 64gb model. Any clue on if any AT&T models will be available or if they'll do what the Retina Macbook did and be out of stock for months...

Can someone confirmed this?

I guess this is really splitting hairs, but someone (partially) debunked the claim that the Droid RAZR is thinner than the iPhone 5. While it's thinner at its thinnest point, at its thickest point it's thicker than the iPhone (which is uniform thickness). I guess Apple should really be saying that the iPhone 5 is the "world's most uniformly thin smartphone." :p

Not with that hump it's not! But there are some Chinese models that are.

----------

I pre-ordered the 4S last year from Apple, received it on launch day but my card wasn't charged until the following Tuesday.

Mine wasn't charged for quite a while. Seems like it was over a week IIRC.
