Either do an upgrade or a new line. Then when you pick up the phone, have them ring it up, sign the contract, and return the phone. Returning breaks the contract and then you can buy the phone full price.

However - not every employee or store will do this. Some look at you like you're insane as they don't know how to do what you're asking. Others know it before you even say it. I've done this for two phones.

Meh, seems like quite the headache. I'll just have them hold one for me for purchase one of these nights ;)
 
I could be wrong but it looks to me that they get their Verizon shipments on Friday or Saturday. The only time I have seen a lot of in stock is on Friday and Saturday. That goes for Verizon I have no idea about Sprint and ATT.
 
Is this method pretty accurate for checking iPhone stock? I can't reserve one since I'm doing an upgrade swap with a new line but I do plan to check daily while I wait for AT&T to get me my preorder. I assume I'll find one before they actually get it to me.
 
So I just talked with someone via the Apple Chat and they told me that this online ordering for an iphone 5 will not work if the phone is already added to my cart....is this true? I just haven't seen any phones the last few days and thought maybe I was doing it wrong. Any info on the best way to see as soon as they are available would be appreciated. Thanks.

Not true. Ordered 2 at different times/days, and I had it already in the cart. Just refreshed and the stores became available...In Stock.

I've been trying with the phone in my cart already. I'll try without it in my cart this evening.
 
There's no way to do a "device only" purchase ($649, $749, or $849) if ordering online for next day pickup, right?

I did. Selected the upgrade device option, entered phone number, zip, account passcode, Apple came back with full retail price. Added to my cart, hit locate a few times at 10pm, purchased, done. No questions, no hang ups, no problem.
 
Just an FYI:
If you've tried to purchase an iPhone 5 several times and failed like I have, you might find multiple hard inquiries in your credit report which could affect your credit score. I found that AT&T ran hard inquiries for the 3 times that I tried to order an iPhone 5 for pickup at a store the next day because I had to go through the credit check before I could get to the order screen and choose which store to pickup from. Unfortunately, I wasn't fast enough and ran out of stores within an hour from where I live to pick up from.
To clarify, this is via the Apple Store online.

is this for replacing a line for an existing account? Or are you opening a new account/adding a new line?

wow, that's interesting. Whenever checking my upgrade (which i don't have) i get a message saying "apple couldn't process the request and i needed to visit my local at&t store."

The Pick up at store/local radio button was selected, and I picked the link to change the store. The pop-up window opens, and it will show "Unavailable". I just hit refresh from there [COMMAND+R].

The first time I needed to select a different store, and it showed up after a couple refreshes. The second time it just came up as available on the current store [there are 2 Apple stores about an hour from my house].

Just be patient, and persistent.

I live in Los Angeles and I was able to order my phone for next-day pick up at 10:37pm last night. I forgot to go online at 10pm and was freaking out, thought I'd try anyways, and was incredibly surprised to see they had them in stock at several Apple Stores in the area. I'll be swinging by Pasadena tonight to get mine. :D

I think I may have done it differently than you. I don't have the iPhone App that tells me where it's in stock (because I don't have an iPhone yet!). Instead, I simply go on Apple's website and go through the checkout process. Then when you get to the shipping information, chose Pick Up from Local Store. Enter your zip code. If they're sold out in your area, all the stores will say "Unavailable." If they're not however, it'll say In Stock. I think that's what they mean by this whole 10pm - 4am business.

You are doing it right, sometimes they simply just don't have it. I have managed to get one for myself and one for a relative using that method. Tried again yesterday for another relative in the Iowa area, but with no luck. Keep on trying...
 
They told me to try it at the Apple Store to find the stock. Apparently they update their inventory and if they get any in that day for tomorrow, it will show up there first. So far they only had Verizon and White models in stock today and yesterday.
 
Has anyone ever seen the availability change in real time on the store list?

Last night, I saw it go from Pickup in store to unavailable in real time.

Do you guys just refresh the store list via the link or refresh the whole cart and then hit the store list each time?

I ordered one today for delivery but would really not like to wait until November if I can avoid it..

I'll add to it by saying when I arrived at the Apple store, they brought the phone out, pointed their handheld POS at the box once or twice, checked my credit card and license, handed me the phone and asked if I needed any help setting it up. I told them as long as I can pull down a web page over LTE and make a phone call I was all set. He said, "you're all done then, if you need anything else, let me know."

It was hands down the most painless cell phone purchase I've ever made. I unwrapped it in the store, checked for nicks/scratches, opened safari, placed a call, and walked out. I'll admit the first two calls didn't go through, but the third one did. I was out of the store in 15 minutes flat.

PS The Apple employee never laid hands on the phone. He gave it to me shrink wrapped and activated.

So it comes and goes from 10:00-4am? That might explain why I got mine at 10:37pm, but at 10:15 the other day they were sold out.

Also, is the option for Store Pick Up removed from the website from 4:00 am - 10pm? (I don't want to go through the checkout process again to see.)
 
Guys, I've received word that of you're on the east coast, the process won't start until 11 tonight. Please don't waste your time logging on at 10 :D

No. It just says in your cart that it is available at 10pm.
 
How are some people able to buy from apple for full price of $649, I keep getting the error occured message asking me to visit AT&T Store...?

You won't see option to buy " Device Only ". You need to upgrade your phone (assume you have iphone 4s) go thru process until you have success pickup @Apple Store. Store will refund that phone and sell you full price.
