More cases were right than wrong. There were some that were wrong.
Right: iPod Nano, iPad Nano (square), 3G iPhone, iPad 2
The iPod touch with camera was based on real data. The camera was dropped at the last minute for unclear reasons.
Regardless, your original claim that case manufacturers know nothing about future product designs is very wrong.

Exactly what I was talking about. Case designers get technical info before anyone else does. They don't know specs/features but they get dimensional data to create cases.
The iPhone 5 design data leaked out and shows the form factor just like the iPad 2 cases did as did the nano etc...
Apple is not dumb. They watch the market an they know the screen sizes of the competition are growing. They have to go that way as well otherwise they lose interest of the masses and they cannot afford this. Of course an A5 chip, more RAM etc... helps as well but the focus these days seems to be on 4+" screens. Based on the leaked cases we've seen as well as this new protector we're looking at at least a 4" screen on the IP5.
Also, we should mention that it appears the external antenna has been axed in this model. That was neat idea for Apple but they got a lot of flak for that (merited or not). Remember, they took a bath on the free cases and bumpers to shut people up about it. I don't think they are going to repeat that mistake. Apple is a company that learns from it's mistakes but they generally don't go around admitting it (Steve used to make fun of some things at times i.e.: Mobile me, but that's as far as they will go on that topic).
Same goes for the use of glass on the back. Looks nice but terribly brittle and damage prone (I know, mine just broke yesterday). I can imagine that their warranty claims on that one alone cost them plenty.
Those 2 design factors from the IP4, as good as that phone is and has sold extremely well, were a poor design decision. Here is an article I recall from one of the manufacturers saying that Apple didn't make the IP4 easily manufacturable as it was prototyped on low-volume CNC milling machines which they had to buy thousands of (at at cost of $20K each) just to make the damn thing.

The IP4 has been a huge success but not without a price and some issues.
The IP5 should be a *very* nice phone based on Apple improving just about everything of the IP4. No wonder they are keeping a tight lid on it

(Don't cannibalize sales of the best selling phone of all time)
I'm eyeing a Galaxy 2S but I'm going to wait and see what Apple releases before I decide anything. Android is interesting but lacks the spit and polish of iOS but at least I can root those without a lot of issues. I love my iPhone and need to jailbreak it but I hate that Apple locks us down so much.
