It's all about iOS. From what I have read, the new voice controls can not be used on the current iphone 4 and 3GS. Therefore, a 4S and 5 iphone is necessary.

Yes, the 3GS sells but once the new phones come out it will be old technology. The current iphone 4 will replace it and will be $99.

I think the iphone 5 will be a superior phone at a price point of $300 to target higher end users. The 4S will be the standard $200.
Interesting. What doesn't make sense then is that apple has already confirmed iOS 5 will run on 3GS. Yes the voice control is a different story, but why make sure it can run iOS 5 if you're just going to discontinue it the moment the 4s/5 hits?

Why can't this "iPhone 5" case simply be the case for what everyone is calling the "iPhone 4S?"

Maybe instead of calling it the "4S" Apple is simply calling it the "iPhone 5" with it still being just a hopped up 4?

Something about that pic is strange though. The packaging sure looks "home brew."

Well.....because the case itself represents a tapered design and bigger phone. That's all in the original post. No offense at but it's like some people don't actually read the full story before they respond, haha.

----------

MacRumors posts this story, then says in another thread that the cases are a "distraction" -- so what is it?

Yeah they're a distraction because AT&T loves spending money on cases for a phone that doesn't exist, haha. They really posted it was a distraction? Wtf man, why are people hating so much, haha.

----------

Yeah cause AT&T sells iPod touches and iPod touch cases in their stores

Exactly.

I want to believe this, but how do we know that this picture isn't from a guy in China who has a box of these cases in his apartment? How are these pictures proof that these are from an employee at AT&T Wireless in the U.S.?

Wait, wait, wait a minute. So now your telling me this is real because, based on one suspicious design way back when, and it's in the stores, it has to be true? Ok, why hasn't Apple put the strangle hold on AT&T or CaseMate? Why haven't any of the sites been threatened with legal action for posting images? Do we all of a sudden think that they have changed their ways or don't have enough money to anything about it? Maybe it's time to post a summary of facts without interpretation and a separate summary of rumors.

Who knows what is being announced other than the people working on it? Nobody! So step away from the keyboard, take a deep breath, and enjoy your weekend. It will all be over in no time.

Sigh........let's see, like they pursued legal action with the ipad 2 case leaks right, or the iphone 4? Oh that's right, they didn't. Marketing, publicity, demand, enough said.

I might be dumb but wouldn't AT&T know something since they are one of the biggest carriers ?

One thing worth noting, that packaging is from AT&T Authorized Retailer stores, not corperate stores. The same line of logic applies but instead of corperate AT&T making the orders, it's an inventory manager of an authorized retailer chain from a distributer who stocked them.

Not trying to discourage the redesign, I'm all for it! I just want to put some perspective from my observation of the photos.

Bring on the redesign!

This is exactly what I was thinking. There is absolutely no evidence that these photos were taken at an AT&T retail store.

Would I love an iPhone 5? Sure. But right now there is no reason for me to get excited. Guess we'll see on October 4th.

I only heard that the voice commands will not work from one location from one analyst. It is far from concrete information. How can the current iPhone not support voice commands but android devices have from the beginning.

Your point about the 3GS and current iPhone 4 replacing it at $99 is exactly what I said in my post.

And I don't think Apple would spend the money to release 2 devices in the same area with the same specs but a different form factor. The cost to develop and manufacture these devices is immense.

You have to hand it to Apple that they could keep us guessing right down to the wire though. Security seems to have been vastly improved.

Yeah improved enough for every backstreet Chinese accessory manufacturer to have injection moulds made and been producing cases for at least a month.

Because...A "hopped up 4" would not require such a drastically redesigned case. The point of a 4S is that it would be somewhat the same as the current 4 with some differences on the inside (much like the 3G/3GS). I seriously doubt Apple would redesign the whole iPhone inside and out and call it iPhone 4S. So if this is truly the new iPhone case it would/should be for an "iPhone 5" Get it?

All that packaging for one case?

Ugliest packaging in history?

Not to mention a lot of wasted space in that packaging. I've never seen one case packed like that and it makes em think that it's a scam. I could be wrong, but has anyone ever seen such unnecessary packaging for one case?

So excited. I was planning on getting whatever the cheapest option was (iphone 4 or 4s 8gb) off contract, but if that design turns out to be real like it appears to be, it's worth the 2 yr AT&T contract.

Also hoping the 21mbps HSPA+ rumor is true, but that may be a pipedream

This article is a joke

This case (which looks like cheap junk) looks like it comes from a authorized retailer store of AT&T. I am basing this on the incredibly crappy looking packaging. If this were from a corporate store it wouldn't have some huge printed office label and if it were from a corporate AT&T store I'd be more likely to believe this. MacRumors credibility for posting this article has gone down in my book.

That's not AT&T Store packaging........

Nope. Not unless AT&T has gone to cheap, crappy looking packaging for their accessories. Accessories sold in an AT&T repackage almost always (if not always) have AT&T branding on the package. This (the OP picture) looks to be some package destined for an authorized retailer (not a corporate store). That's why it has the crappy looking inkjet label printed on a mailing label.

Here are pics of AT&T's current corporate packaging. Every single repackaged iPhone 4 case in my local AT&T store has this packaging, including some of the major manufacturers (Speck, Incipio, Otterbox). Clearly shows the AT&T branding/logo.

Looks like a ipod touch case

Couldn't these just be ipod touch cases? My ipod touch case has the same tapered edge design.

Maybe apple is releasing a 3g ipod touch?
