I can see this as being useful. The Retina Display is too fine. Unnecessary. So just increase the screen size to fill the face of the existing shell of the iPodTouch/iPhone keeping the device the same size and the resolution the same size.

For larger there is the iPad.

I don't see the smaller version as being very useful.

funny how the rumors tend to show the same underlying story... Apple is caving in to competition and doing things Jobs dismissed or made fun of. Larger screens on their phone, smaller cloud-based phones with limited functionality, a smaller 7" ipad and possibly adding Flash back to the iOS universe. If Jobs kicks the bucket... Apple just may tear down their walled garden!!!

No THANKS.

A 4" screen on something you carry around in your pocket is ridiculously over-sized.

I thought that until I used one of my friend's 4" Android phone.

God I hope not. Id like my next phone to fit my current case. I also dont need a bigger phone.

Apple has shown many times that they don't care about breaking compatibilty with accessories. And the accessory manufacturers love it because they get to sell to you again.

It looks like I'm in the minority but I'm against anything that would increase the size of the phone. I'm not sure that removing the home button and utilizing the space that is now a black border around the screen would be enough to bump to a 4" screen w/o also enlarging the form factor?

For years I carried a dumb flip phone, the thing was tiny. Having the iPhone in my pocket is still awkward at best. I see some of my friend's phones and they look to me like they're the size of a late-generation PDA device. I can't imagine shoving something even larger in the pockets of my jeans and I wouldn't want it in my dress pants either.

Would be ok - would probably still fit into my backpocket without being annoying. Not that I need the bigger screen, but I'm also not opposed to it - some people might prefer a slightly bigger screen.

Just wondering if the bigger screen would replace the current screen or if it would be an additional phone ... doesn't sound apple like to have a 3.5 AND 4 inch screen ....

"...to better compete with Google Android."

Anytime I see/hear of a rumor so that Apple can better compete with [insert competing product / company], I write off the rumor as false. Apple does not compete against other companies / devices...meaning, the perceived successes of others is not what drives them. They do not engineer / design to copy what others have done. Rather, it's the failures of others to innovate on behalf of consumer simplicity that motivates them. Apple seeks to best their own products...they compete with themselves.

Meanwhile, Leaving Narnia to one side and back in the world of reality :p

Hopefully the the phone will be the same size but with an edge to edge bigger screen. That would be nice, after the iPhone 4 they have do have a big feature to get people to buy

WHEN not IF.....

Rumors...exactly, just as you stated

Umm...crazy thought, but you just referred to these claims as rumors yourself. Might want to hold and see if they come true before making statements of philosophical changes at Apple due to weakness.

In fact, Apple does not compete against other companies / devices...meaning, the perceived successes of others is not what drives them. They do not engineer / design to copy what others have done. Rather, it's the failures of others to innovate on behalf of consumer simplicity that motivates them. Apple seeks to best their own products...they compete with themselves. Therefore, they likely test a lot of different ideas. With their laser focused engineering efforts and plenty of cash, they can afford to do so. Likely, those prototype efforts are what get leaked. If Steve says a 7" iPad sucks, it's probably cause they actually built one and tried it out.

I would LOVE a bigger screen!! but I don't know if i want a bigger device like the droids.

But what I really really want in the iPhone 5 is 4G LTE for Verizon! 4G LTE Droid phones are already scheduled to be coming out. Apple better hurry up on the 4G plans!! please

LTE is barely faster than AT&T's 3G in a good area. I typically get 3-5 megs everywhere in metro Atlanta and have seen 7 megs down.

Sorry, but I just think this is a total fantasy.

You are expecting me that Apple launched the 1st Mac, and their 1st iPhone and if no other company had been around in the world and Apple was the sole builder and seller of computers and phones, the current iMac and iPhone would still have been made exactly the same as they have been with all the competition around?

The one thing I can bet big money on is that Apple is not going to change the aspect ratio of the iPhone or the iPad at this point. It is actually one of the most reliable factors for developers who are looking to make apps. The second you change that, you severely break compatibility.

This isn't a case of like the iPad where you could just hit the 2x button on iPhone apps (which turns out isn't very elegant anyway because the ratios are different as well). The apps really do have to be completely redesigned for a different aspect ratio. Certain apps would also just never get updated because of the amount of work involved.

Just imagine the countless number of games that have been made, and the developer has moved onto other apps because it's the only way to make money. Sadly that is how iOS development works for the majority of developers.

Apple would not risk breaking the huge app store they have available. That is why they were very careful when they did the Retina Display to make it exactly 2x the old iPhone resolution, so that the transition for developers would be pretty easy.

That said, there are still tons of apps that don't have Retina Display support and simply never will. But at least those apps don't look horrible and have weird black bars on the sides or something like that.

So actually mJay's mockups are pretty close to what it would look like. Granted it's just a mockup and it's extremely likely it will look very different, but he nailed the screen size part of the comparison pretty well at least.

Bravo! Beers all round the rumor table.:D
Likewise for increasing the size from 3.5 to 4.0 inch...
Unless a developer used vector graphics instead of raster the outcome would be too pleasing...

About time...

After using a Samsung Captivate, I really prefer a 4" screen and it is the perfect size for a phone, larger is to much.

A larger screen is really the only reason I'd upgrade at this point.

I'll file this one under "fantasy" given the source, but if it were true I wouldn't be all that stoked. Of all the possible improvements to the iPhone, a bigger screen isn't one of them. Bigger screen means more weight, easier to break, screwed up screen ratio, and after all that it still has to scale w/ existing apps.

I really don't see Apple taking Android phone's lead. I hope not at least. Let Android have the Giaganto niche. I'd like Apple to continue focusing on better battery life, lower weight, trimming down the length of the case, and improving durability, which is horrible on the iPhone 4 despite marketing claims.

There is already stuff underneath the screen in today's iPhones - why not in a future revision with extended screen? The biggest "problem" are the components with external "interaction" (home button, speaker & sensors). And as technology improves, Apple might need less space in a future revision...

Granted, at some point in the future, but people seem to be thinking that a 4" screen would allow Apple to get rid of the Home button now. A 4" screen with the same aspect ratio is only 8mm 1/3" taller - that's less than half of the existing space below the screen where the button currently sits. Forgetting the issue of the speaker and front camera, to make an all-screen iPhone with a 4" screen is going to mean cutting the height by about 28mm, over an inch. That's a lot of component space lost. And then you've got the depth taken up by the extra bit of screen. I'm not aware of any of the core components in the iPhone 4 now being available in a smaller size to the same quality, so any size reduction in the iPhone 5 is going to be a compromise.

so a couple things... first, i have VERY small hands (for a male). I recently used a friends phone with a 4 inch screen, and while it was a stretch to reach the far side one handed, it was not that bad. keeping the current form factor (or close, i have NO trouble reaching anything on the screen of my iphone 4), and increasing the screen to the edge would make me very happy. and how hard is it to honestly pocket your phone? i have faily tight pockets most of the time, and i fit my phone in my pocket in a otterbox defender (although it would reverse my pocket most of the time when removing). now that i am caseless, my phone FALLS into my pockets. im sure i am the minority, but i would LOVE to have the "iphone" a page back with the 4.3" screen and smaller home button. that would be my dream. but this year i am not too worried, i will wait till summer 2012 to upgrade to the latest iphone.

I wouldn't mind a 4-inch iPhone..

..as long as it is not heavier. But I don't think this will happen anyhow.. Apple has said on numerous occasions that there's no point when you have the perfect size already. Plus this would just create fragmentation.. Something that Android is heavily criticized for, and rightfully so.

All these random SKUs sound like yet another Apple disinformation campaign with a touch of rumor site wish-listing thrown in for good measure.
