iPhone 5 to Use a 4-Inch Screen?

can't all iphone 5s have the same resolution?! at different sizes?

So then a "Retina" display will no longer be "retina" at a 5 inch screen - then we'll start being able to differentiate the pixels again. Why would we want to go backwards?

Apple would have to offer more pixels on a larger screen. And for apps to work, we'll need true resolution independence support in the OS. And developers will have to submit varying sizes of artwork - more than two, to support this. I simply can't see this happening.

how does windows and OS X do this? there are all kinds of monitors out there and the screen magically resizes

Apps are designed for varying window sizes, not a fixed size screen. On the iPhone, apps are designed to a fixed size screen. Developers also use bitmaps in their UI a lot more on the iPhone than on the desktop.

3.5 is the "smaller" 4 is the new "normal"?????

Interesting theory. Whatever they do re screen sizes, I hope they manage a pixel density such that it avoids 'fragmentation'. You really don't want to start asking developers to create more than a couple of versions of their products.

Touch home button

remove bezel

larger screen

all worthy upgrades to the iphone.

I've always wanted to see Apple FILL the front panel with the screen. No bezel at all, anywhere. (Well, maybe a VERY thin one.) Create some other option for the 'home' button, have the camera peek through the antenna structure... whatever it takes. If anyone can find a way (yes, these are daunting challenges), it's Apple. Make that whole front surface 'live' and colorful.

Make the device seem like magic. That's Apple's way. They are to electronics what Disney once was to movies and amusement parks. Seamless, magic, fun.

Yeah, there's no way Apple will do that. That would be really cool if the Nano iPhone is actually the size we already have, and then the flagship device would be the 4". The 4" would still be higher resolution than most Android phones that are 4-4.5" so I think it would still look great!

I think Apple knows it has to diversify at least somewhat in order to compete with the flood of Android devices that come in every size, shape, and color. They also know that Google's approach has a lot of issues too (fragmentation, sporadic updates by the carrier, etc) so they aren't going to go hog-wild! If they do a small, medium, and large version, that would be more than enough options. Or perhaps one with and without a hardware keyboard (if they go that route). I don't see how a "smaller" one than 3.5" will work out unless they totally change the UI - and then that introduces fragmentation.

Didn't I read somewhere that they could keep the same dimensions on the phone.. and have a 4" screen by cutting out all the bezel?

Seems to make sense to me.

There will be no doubt many seriously pissed off new customers should this happen in July unless they give them a break on the price or a trade in but I doubt they will.

Some of us don't really care cause we get them anyway and take the hit on the hardware and recoup by selling it to the suckers who sit on the sidelines waiting for a good deal.

I just sold my 3Gs for $450.00 bucks thereby recouping my $300.00 Verizon I4 charge and the $80.00 termination fee ATT charged me. Works for me!

Don't toy with my emotions. I held off on the 4 because I wanted a bigger screen. Come on Apple, give us a couple more options.

What we really need.

These rumors are getting out of hand. We definitely will not see a slide out keyboard and apple will not be going to the cloud 100%.

what we need:
Wireless iTunes sync
Share notifications across devices.
SBSettings style control panel (my jailbreakers know what i'm talking about)
Dual processor
4G would be great, but we know it's not coming on iPhone5
Larger screen wouldn't hurt
Re design lock screen. Display information on lock screen.
better google sync integration or give us a way better MobileMe
1080p video
NEW notification system
Indicator light
TMobile and Sprint iPhone's

I don't think they can totally get rid of the bezel, you need a speaker, camera and proximity sensor. You could ditch the bezel/chin at the botton.

Okay, so maybe Apple is fishing

Perhaps Apple is using MacRumors to field product design opinions. Clearly nobody thinks a half-size phone is a good idea while a slightly larger one gets high praise.

Great. Now make the thing IP67 waterproof and I'll be able to chuck a crappy GPS unit.

Good point re competing with Android. They have to be keenly aware of that, and offer more than one model while avoiding fragmentation issues. I'm confident they can find solutions to address these challenges.

That's the challenge - somehow hiding all the stuff that needs to be there.

Remember when all cellphones had an antenna sticking out? Now none of them do (that I know of, anyway). Once a way was found to hide the antennas, they all became hidden. Same deal with the speaker, etc. (No, I don't know HOW. If I knew that, I'd be rich, like the guy who figured out how to hide the antenna.)

You obviously haven't used LTE.

3-5Mb/s < 5-12Mb/s.

And this also doesn't compare latency (i.e. 200-400ms vs.50ms).

But Apple won't be rolling a LTE device this year. It will be next year.

5-12 Mb/s LTE?

Is that what Verizon calls 4G?

Where we have 4G, the speeds are usually around 40-80 Mbit/s, and that's in the most densely populated areas.

I am starting to think Apple is trying to find its leaks. They are tell each person something different and seeing what makes the internet....

On regular PC OS'es, all of the graphical elements remain the same resolution for the most part, everything simply gets smaller the higher pixel densiity you get.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_2_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Mobile/8C148)

I know I don't. I like the size of the iPhone. My cousin has an Evo and it's giant. Can't imagine keeping it in my pocket all the time.

They really should, I've been using a Galaxy S for a few weeks already and 4" do make stuff better, It's not a huge difference but once you go back 3.5" it is painful

You can make the screen without making the phone bigger, the Galaxy S has almost the same size as the 3GS

AT&T/Tmobile call their HSPA+ 4G, so everyone is playing fast and lose with the nomenclature. The point is, Verizon's LTE is much faster than AT&T in real world speeds, not to mention lower latency.

I'm not trying to compare networks in other countries as there are many factors that affect their ability to offer high speeds. Where is this 40-80Mb/s network?

The difference being that you don't have to literally touch a computer screen. You use a mouse and click on areas that may be too small or ill-defined for human fingers. Resolution and screen size is therefore not much of an issue with computers, the way it is for mobile devices.

That was the problem with early 'smartphones'. They were designed like small computer interfaces. No one thought there needed to be any difference, and that's a major reason why they never really took off until the iPhone.
