People mocked those camping outside Apple stores (stupidly early mind), turns out they done the right thing because they'll be first to get their hands on the 5S.

Although saying that I'm writing off the 5C & 5S this year. Hardly any improvements. The iPhone 5 has been killed off after a year because it clearly hasn't lived up to the hype Apple likes to build, I fear the same this year with the 5S.

I notice people on the forum are already saying their waiting for iPhone 6. A few years ago, no one would be thinking about waiting, they'd all be rushing out to get the latest one. How the 5C got the greenlight, I won't ever know.

Um a "few" years ago Apple was "selling" 10 million iPhones a YEAR. In case you missed the memo - last Tuesday they said they sold the 700th million iOS device..

I think the company has grown a bit.. No?!

And I think the "pool" of contract expirations has grown with the variants in iPhone models...

This is the year the 4s people's contracts expire....that pool is HUGE...

It's a no-brainer that these "incremental" upgrades are targeted AT THAT POOL of customers...

Um one other point many of you miss. iOS 7... This will be THE FIRST iPhone launch with an all new operating system... I'm a 5 owner and I've had it for months (iOS) it's super fast and a big update. People will love it... I'll still be in line next Friday for my 5s.. Can't wait :)

its not about being trendy and looking cool. its about having a color that brings value to you. i assume you picked your car's color -- is that about being trendy & cool? nope. its about a style or color that makes you happy.

there is absolutely nothing wrong with that, unless youre a puritan.
Indeed. I love my red Nissan 370Z and I wouldn't trade it for anything. Not even the same car in a different color.

A red 5s would be great. Let's see if there's a case that I like.

I'll concede this much, there are no masculine colours to choose from.

Asked him if he wanted me to get him a 5c and he could pick the color. He said no, he thinks the colors are lame; there aren't any good "guy colors" (dark red, dark blue, hunter green, etc..)

The Hong Kong sales are just scalpers I bet who will sell them to countries not on the release schedule

Not so sure.

You see Hong Kong is probably the only market where Apple may have aimed at the correct market.

Hong Kong is not really China...[you know what I mean..] It was under British rule until 1997! Hong Kong Chinese are very different. Not to mention the standard of living.

So yes, they may still love the gross and gaudy colours [if we are going to stereotype...], in fashion over there right now. However unlike the rest of China, they can relatively actually afford to buy a 5C.

Average monthly minimum wages in :

Beijing = 1400 Yuan = US$228.81 = GB£144.53
Hong Kong = *4224 Yuan = US$690 = GB£436.07

(*rough figure with HD$ converted at 1.25 to 1 Yuan, but you get the picture)

Well, for the ATT part, I've got $100 credit from ATT; got to spend the money before it expires in a month. :D

Except for the AT&T part, I agree. More importantly I want to see and feel the new phones before I decide what I am getting. I am not buying based on pictures.

Also if stores run out of the 5s n launch day they will have 5c in stock. I can see a lot of people who waited in line for a new phone will end up picking up a 5c if the 5s is out of stock then just hope they can get the 5s in a few weeks then return it and pay the restocking fee and grab a 5s.

you guys kill me -- when the phone sells out at launch you bitch that they didnt make enough, its a conspiracy for press, etc.. then when they have enough at launch you still bitch.

do you realize how absurd this is?

I realize how absurd it is for you to draw such a conclusion. Imagine a Venn Diagram: the people you describe are in the middle of one, and it's not that many

Except that it is a couple of hundred dollars too expensive for that market. They will sell plenty, but it won't be the game changer that people have been looking for that would reverse Apple's declining worldwide market share.

Agreed about the price, I think Apple actually wanted to sell the 5C for less than this but maybe just couldn't get component costs down enough. We will have to see if the price comes down over the next couple of months as there will be a decent margin in there knowing Apple and it will get cheaper to make over time. Apple is an aspirational brand in these markets too so we will have to wait and see how things play out. Market share is only part of the equation for Apple as they may not sell as many phones as competitors but make most profit overall and for a company profit is what counts.

My son is 14 and just 3 days ago got a used iPhone4s I got from work (old company equipment). Found out last night that the right hand edge of the screen is completely unresponsive.

Asked him if he wanted me to get him a 5c and he could pick the color. He said no, he thinks the colors are lame; there aren't any good "guy colors" (dark red, dark blue, hunter green, etc..)

Not sure what it shows, just one kids opinion of the 5c.

As for what I'm doing, not sure. Thinking of fixing the display ($30), but also considering upgrading his to a iP5 (AT&T has referbs online for $50). Or, upgrading my phone (iP5) to a 5s and giving him my old one. . . $199.

Decisions, decisions.

I'm in the entertainment marketing field here in Los Angeles.. Some very very sound analytical data research projects recently concluded that the gap in customers between the droids and the iPhones is gender based. Clearly Apples choice of colors -- without a shadow of doubt is 100% geared toward that data point.

That said your sons reaction is expected. Doubtful his is the same for the 5s once he gets his hands on it..

The 5c without a doubt is a niche driven demographic compilation from Apple - a hipper and more wildly color combination to a more lifestyle driven customer GLOBALLY where "colors" in fact bright colors are quite popular - the polar opposite of Americas tastes.. with the male demographic...

The 5c will sell well.. Real well. To a specific data point.. It's targeted. Trust me.

Having a phone as an "accessory" is definitely a trendy first-world problem. Picking a color of car may be a first world problem as well, but its definitely not an accessory to most and the cost:value is completely different to most.

Update: Some seven hours after the start of pre-orders, Apple's U.S. online store has experienced its first launch-day sellout, with the unlocked yellow 16 GB model currently showing an estimated shipment date of September 25.

looks like yellow is popular color

If the 5S is sold out (as in 1-3 week wait) on 9/20, then I think that will indicate the 5C is not spectacular to the buying public.

Given that you know nothing about the supply, that metric is not any sort of an indicator of demand.

"If tech-naïve buyers choose 5C..." does not mean that "They who choose 5C are tech-naïve." It simply means that, say, frequent readers of arstechnica or theverge are probably not representative of the general population. If the 5C is a success, and we can credit the colorful plastic shell, then that says more about what the general buyer wants then what techies are looking for.

I don't agree with the part that assumes the 5c would be successful with the mass market primarily for color. Mass market buyers are not generally that simplistic, even if they're not techies. For example, can you think of another brand of smartphone that used bright colors and wasn't widely successful with mass market consumers?

So yellow is the most popular color? I guess people have different tastes...because I would pick blue first, then green.

+1.. no demands for the 5C... what a waste of R&D.
Generally..... most people want the latest and the greatest!

Not true. 50% of iPhone sales in the last year were 4 and 4s, not the 5. iPhone 5c will do even better because it's technically new, and because of the color options. It will sell very well.

I guess it's not all good news. I suspect the reason for no 5S pre orders lies somewhere between Apple wanting the 5C to take off by giving it some head start and possible fingerprint sensor related yield issues. We'll never know.

I suspect supply may be higher than usual for a "new" phone. Most of the technology is the same as the previous one, just a new case and a couple new components. Based on previous years, Apple may be assuming that they'll sell more of the cheaper phones and accordingly have their production lines making lots of the 5c.

We'll see when the sales figures come out and from the threads on this forum and others if these phones sell well or not.

I get the feeling some folk are still seeing the world through Apple tinted glasses. A lot of folk have become more wise and won't jump just because Apple says so.

All this whining about it being priced too high is eerily reminiscent of cries last year about the iPad mini and how it would fail miserably. Did that happen?

I mean - look at the 5c promo video - Apple quite CLEARLY purposely spent quite amount of time in that piece showing YOU how fast on an assembly line these iPhones are made... Intentionally letting the world know this item will be produced IN MASS quantities...

Those of us familiar with last years "5" launch know first hand the quality control issues on "that" model.. I'm certain Apple knows what market the C is geared towards and that market will embrace this model...

that's cause everyone is waiting for the 5s

No, it's because they likely have a greater launch day inventory of the 5c than any previous iPhone.

Remember the 5C as the greatest flop from Apple in the recent years.

It's more likely to become the best launching iPhone and should outsell the 5s, simply because supplies are not constrained and Apple is pushing it so hard.
