Can you let us know if the gyro remains perfect, or if it slowly loses it's calibration? Thanks!

This is a link to an older article re: mobile gyroscopes. Maybe it will help out a few. After reading it, it does seem more hardware-ish : /

24 hours later, 2 restarts, update to 7.0.2, and a 12 mile rugged mountain bike ride using GPS and the replacement phone still goes to -1degrees. (Which I assume is as good as you'll get with a 5s at this point.)

I can verify the drifting as well. My 5s was -1° and... A couple days later, I repeated my initial tests and this time, it was solidly -2°, and has been since.

Sorry to say I am seeing this also.

My first 5S reported -6 from day one. That was replaced at the genius bar for a different reason (accelerometer was reporting constant motion).

The replacement 5s consistently showed -2 when I brought it home last Wednesday. Now it is consistently reporting -3.

EDIT: Just to update, it has been a bit more than two weeks since the above post, and the reading has remained at -3. So while there was some initial "drift" or "worsening" of the error, it did stabilize at -3 and has not gotten any worse.

So it's a HW fault then.
If it was SW then all phones with the M7 chip would be affected. No wonder apple are choosing to ignore it but I'm curious to know what the fault is and with millions sold it would be interesting to see how many are bad.

I wish that was how software bugs presented themselves, would make my job a lot easier, but it's not.

It could easily be software.

Sorry to chime in here. How exactly are you guys testing this? What do you do to establish the phone is reporting incorrect values? I tried to go through the entire thread but couldn't find a definite answer. Thanks.

Some of us are using standard bubble levels.
Some of us are using digital levels.
Some of us are comparing the data to previous generation iphones on the same surface.

Some sites are reporting that. 7.0.3 update is coming this week...any chance it might contain a gyro-fix? Doubtful.

No. The degree to which they are off doesn't change on individual phones. (They are equally off while lying on both sides.) The error is consistent all around the same phone. But whether that can be repaired with some kind of new calibration procedure or the sensor is mounted off in an non-fixable way is a whole different issue.

This seems to be straight calibration. But again, we have no idea if said calibration is accessible or must be done low-level on the sensor itself.

I get two different readings based on long edge and short edge. -5 on long and -1 on short.

Apple Customer Support

I spoke to a Senior Apple Advisor on the phone tonight and after having me restore the device and doing that strange 90-minute do not disturb calibration thing (that does not work) he told me that this is a known issue. Apple definitely realizes that there is a problem with some if not all of the recently shipped iPhone 5s devices. The senior advisor seemed to think that this was simply a software issue, and he said that it might be somehow tied to the maps on the device (not really sure how, but ok..). He got the diagnostics from my phone (which is off by 3 degrees) and told me that he would check with engineering and will get back to me Wednesday or Thursday. He will also tell me definitively whether or not this is a software or hardware issue. I will wait or him to call and post an update in a couple of days. I really hope this can be easily fixed.

That would make sense. Thanks. I'm going to test my 5S against my wife's 5. I'm curious now.

I'm pretty sure Apple will continue to ignore this indefinitely. So far only a very very small fringe of the user base is aware of the issue. If I had to guess, i'd say Apple is banking on that remaining that way for the foreseeable future. It simply makes business sense when such a small niche is aware of the issue unfortunately.

Edit: this is based on the assumption that it's a hardware issue of course.

Drifting confirmed. 0 degrees on flat ground when new, 2 degrees now after 7 hours of use.

I went to measure the angle of my kitchen floor the other day, just messing around and my 5S said it was at a 7 degree angle. I thought that was crazy so I set my buddy's 5 on the floor and sure enough, his said it was perfectly level.

Definitely an issue for me because I use the level and compass quite a lot for hiking and working on my car, things around the house etc.

Best way to get apple's attention here and to get a response from them is to report this to big tech sites and blogs. If we can get huge media sites to report on this issue, and make everyone aware of it apple will have to respond.

So fire up your emails and start spreading the word.

Anyone had a replacement which doesnt have this issue? Is there anyone who has a level phone?

Just tried playing Asphalt 8 and had to play it on the wonk in order to go in a straight line.

Compass was WAYYYY off until I did the figure of 8 calibration. Thats fine now. My 5 is fine, level on all accounts.

The drifting confirms this is a HW fault.
The only way to fix this is a recall and that will never happen.

I have the same issue as you all, trying to play a flight simulator game using accelerometer was impossible. Could barely see the screen when trying to get the plane in a straight line as I had to angle it so much!

My readings are: -3 on its back, -1 short side and -2 long side.

Not acceptable.

Both Munich Apple Stores: All 5s units affected

Here's word from Germany: I tested all 5s display units (more than 30) in both Munich Apple stores: ALL units are affected; when measuring on the table in landscape mode, the level shows values which are at best(!) off by 1 degree and in the worst cases they are off by 6 degrees. 3 degrees are average, I'd say.

Several 5c and 4s units tested as well, they are all perfectly level!

The 5s I bought a few days ago has -3, which is indeed a big deal in racing or flight games. Pretty annoying. Can't keep the unit unless there will be word from Apple during the next days, that this is a software bug that will be fixed (which I think is pretty unlikely).

Hi Mercenary,

Mines got the same issues on a flat surface its -3 degrees. I tried the figure of 8 Calab but didnt work?

Is yours still at 0 on all levels?

Thanks

Mines -2 on all levels. The compass was showing north in the totally wrong direction but a figure 8 and the compass was fine. Levels still off though.

Just on the phone to applecare now but I suspect its widespread from what everyones saying, possibly a software fix but I at least wanted to register my issue so no one asked me in 2 months why I didnt report it sooner :)

Just got off the phone. Just "Sorry your having problems" and she said she could send out a new unit if I give them a credit card so they can put a hold on the funds until I send the other one back. Or go to an apple store and get it replaced.

Im not going to rush into that though as others are having the same problem with new phones so wait and see if a SW fix comes along and if not then I'll go and swap it once things iron themselves out.

Seems apple stores (at least in Florida) just got a new big batch of phones, there were none available up until yesterday afternoon on any store in south florida, all of a sudden there's stock in gray in all stores. anyone bought one in the last day or two that can confirm if maybe something has changed in this new batch?

Wondering the same thing, and hoping this new batch will not have the problem.

We are on a Apple tech site now and despite pages upon pages of comments even MacRumors is refusing to make this front page news. On the payroll perhaps?

They have a news story right under their nose and ignore it. Why?

That's an excellent question...
