Phoning online store now to get a replacement sent out. Cant be bothered with treking all the way to MK only to be told they dont have any to replace with or some other BS. Its fine apart from the button rattle. I can live with it until the new one arrives.

Call done, new phone will be here early next week. They take the old one off me so no need for me to package anything up. They put a hold on my credit card for the funds incase the phone I send back is damaged or I dont send it back. If its all cool they just release the funds back again. So no cost to me.

if they are only taking handset then u are getting a refurb unit, they are not necessarily bad but u need to be aware that not all components will be brand new.

Drove 5 hours round trip to have a 'genius' take a look at the phone. My original 5s had a small nick on the bevel out of the box and an annoying power button rattle, along with sensor-gate issues...

They were about 30-40 minutes behind despite making an appointment. The guy was nothing short of a duechebag. I pointed out the nick on the chambered edge, pointed out the rattle and showed him how bad the level was. He informed me that they do not replace phones for power button rattles and that apple defines that as normal. At first he tried saying it was the camera making the noise. I told him that when I hold or just touch the power button, it goes away. He still argued that I was 'tweaking' the housing on the phone when pushing down on the power button and it was binding up the camera, hence it not rattling. What a tool. Here's where it got funny. When he handed me the replacement, I looked it over and wouldn't you know, It had about a 1/4"x1/8" section that was all scratched up on the bottom. He didn't really give a **** and told me since mine had a mark that I had to deal with it or not accept the replacement. wow...

After driving all that way, I just put it in my original iPhone 5s box and headed home disappointed. Re-activated my iPhone 4 to use until I get another set of screen protectors and/or an acceptable replacement. Took the phone out when I got home and wouldn't ya know, rattles like a penny in a tin can. $1000 device that is supposed to be manufactured with extreme precision my ass. I'm losing faith in apple and now that I accepted a replacement, I'm guessing I can't even return this pos back to best buy for a refund. I still have the original iphone from 2007 and works great to this day.

/off rant...

I think he screwed you over on purpose. If you went to any other store or dealt with any other "Genius" I think you would have had better results. I would call Apple support about this and then I would call that Apple store and make another appointment. Chances are that you will have better success.

All one has to do now is google iphone 5s sensors.

I still don't expect Apple to acknowledge this publicly if they can't fix it via software and it requires hardware replacement. You would have millions of people wanting a replacement even if it does not affect them just knowing something is wrong. Since most people do not use these sensors they will prob keep it quiet. The good news is, because of all the media attention, they could decide it is best to have some sort of software calibration at the genius bars or even a user option rather then swap out the hardware.

Ive decided I am not going to do any swapping until it is confirmed software will not fix this and 90% of the new phones are shipping with 0 degrees on the back and side just like the iPhone 5, 4S etc. Last thing i want is a loose power button, interlaced/uneven screen etc not to mention it has learned my finger prints with almost 100% accuracy since I have had it.

BTW just got word from a tech at Apple. They are offering a replacement and would like to get mine so they can see the issue lol. I passed. Its not that hard since 90% of them seem to do it and all the ones I have seen in the store do. Im sure even Tim's does it. Oh wait he probably has the 6 :)

Just an update about whether or not to return mt wife's 5S..... She looked like a sad puppy this morning, and is smitten by her new phone. She said she's willing to live with it, as long as long as the other features work. I guess that's why Apple has so much cash...... She's the one that has to decide which phone makes her happy, but her decision is based purely on the brand name.

-2 on its side and -3 laying flat. My compass, however, is completely accurate.

My dad's iPhone 5 reads -1.

MR did worse than ignore this issue, they actually shutdown the initial thread about it. Said, "this thread has gone off the rails." I assumed it was for bickering, but I've seen far worse bickering that hasn't gotten threads closed.

Yes I saw them close other threads on this topic yet leave dozens of "I hate iOS 7 icon" threads going. It makes one wonder......

Sorry if this has been covered previously on this thread. It's very long.

If other people have said that this is just a faulty calibration issue, I'm inclined to agree. The "iLevel" app on the app store initially gave me a -1. It has a calibration option. Once you press calibrate it resets to 0 and everything works as it should. I don't see an option to manually "recalibrate" on Apple's stock app. If they add that, I bet it would do the trick for the level function anyway.

But remember the sky does not fall today. If the issue is not addressed by a software update, she can always exchange the phone throughout the next year. I'll be waiting to see what happens over the next month or so with this issue.

iPhone 5s accelerometer/gyroscope/compass values incorrect

Ok called up UK apple care and told them about the issue. Spoke to a senior support engineer who apparently hadnt heard of the issue. He said he will call me back after trying to replicate the issue on his side. Let me see what he comes back with. Trying my little to spread the news in UK

iPhone 5S compass and level inaccurate

My compass is off by about 12 degrees after performing a calibration. The compass also seems to easily get interference. It is quite often off by random amounts. In one instance it was off by 180 degrees.

The level is off by 4 degrees when the 5S is placed on a known level surface. An iPhone 4S placed on the same surface read zero degrees.

I have a case logged with them about this and the flash not working some of the time.of course they heard about it, they just want you to feel like you are being anal. when I called they told me that I did not purchase from an apple store and to go to point of purchase. they did not believe me till I scanned the apple store receipt and sent to them. they finally offered to send me out a refurb unit after holding the cost of the phone from my account and charging me £29. I declined.

local apple store where I purchased the device are out of stock and treating me with attitude like I am trying to trick them in some way.

as someone said in an earlier post this just takes the shine off getting buying a new smart phone.

not 0.1 the iPhone app rounds up my -1 was in fact 1.7

I'm not sure how you know I'm wrong, but I did mean 0.1° as I also compared the 2 iPhones using the same 3rd party app.

The difference between the 2 was 0.1° with the iPhone 4 showing 0.9° and the 5s showing 1°.

Apple uk gave me no probs and didn't want to charge me £29. Just put a hold on my card for the phone incase I don't return the old one.

Did you calibrate compass using figure 8 motion? It's seems to work a lot better than moving red dot in circle.

2 business days. So Tuesday, Maybe wednesday. Depends what time it all goes through.

I seriously doubt it will solve any balance issues. The fact people say every phone in the store is off and even our week 39 units are off.

When I said I did previously phone up about the balance he did say that they want the phone back for the engineers.

All they need back from me is the phone. He said what the courier brings should be a full retail box. So possibly a chance of an extra lightning cable out of all this ;)

Did they try and charge you £29 as another forum member just said that was the case via uk AppleCare?

Apple is just hoping this blows over and will not respond. Sure it got posted on CNET, CultofMac, etc, but those were 1 day articles and if you go to those sites you have to dig to find them again. Gamers are really going to have to push this. Apple makes big money off of selling gaming apps. Have to get the big companies involved such as EA Sports, etc and their forum base.

Compared to my iPhone 4, the compass reading on the 5s is similar, but where the 4 shows a flatish surface (table top) to be flat or -1 degree, the 5s reads -6 degrees.

Having tried again I get only -2 to -1 degrees. Things that have changed between times include recalibrating the compass when launched, rebooting the phone and updating from iOS 7.0.1 to 7.0.2. Not sure which of those or anything else has had an effect. The one pano shot I've tried seemed ok.

I've logged a call with apple support and a senior assistant is going to ring me tomorrow.

They definitely know about the issue, told me to try the 90 minute do not disturb thing.

I will let you all know what happens.

So because he doen't have the issue he's a troll?

I've already posted in this thread that my 5s doesn't suffer from this problem either. Does this make me a troll now?

you are a troll if you are telling us that are having the issue that this isn't a real problem and that we are imagining things, yes.

Lets be serious and collect this data. If you're not having the issue then congrats and post in another thread.

How did you contact Apple UK, my help request to them resulted in a call from the US who told me to swap it at the Apple store where I bought it. I'd rather get a replacement sent to me than have to wait for my store to get stock.

So let me get this straight...you don't have a loose power button currently? You'd be the first 5S I've heard of that doesn't have that...if so what is your factory and week of production and color and size too please?

Went through self help online, said it was a service request. Entered my email for diagnostics, it sent me an email I opened on my phone, did the extended diags. The website then springs into life and gives me options. I selected a call. Entered my number and a nice Irish chap called me. Said they were sorry, options were 1)apple store but stock is unknown. 2) standard replacement where I send it back and they send me a new one or 3)express repair. They put a hold on my card for £630, send me a new phone and I swap it with UPS.

Today is my 14 day deadline. I'm happy with the phone but am not happy with this sensor issue. I guess I will wait for Apple's (hopefully) software solution. My local store does not have any replacements in stock and I'm not sure a replacement would be any better.

I sure wish Apple would do the right thing and come out with a statement that they are working on it...would really restore my consumer confidence in them.

Ive had this one since launch day. It has a very very tiny bit of play in it but does not rattle etc like a replacement I got from ATT I sent back.
