If Apple can't fix with a software or firmware update, it will not get fixed for us. Apple will not replace 5 million + phones that have been sold so far, with the majority showing this problem. Once people find out they were doing that, most of the 5 million would demand a replacement. That would kill Apple's stock, and Apple itself, and would be the biggest exchange of one product in the history of business. If Apple can not fix this issue internally, they will never admit the problem exists, and thus no mass returns will be allowed, as they will say anything off by less than 5 degrees is within tolerance.

They won't admit to it but I'm sure they will if the media or courts find out. When it comes to a level or gyro, there's no such thing as a 5 degree tolerance. No other Apple device has this issue and never heard of any non-Apple device having such an issue. Someone screwed up here. They got on stage at the WWDC and told the world about this wonderful M7 that now has problems. They should be ashamed. Seems like they spent more time on the camera instead of the gyro. I have lots of Apple products and every iphone and I'm very disappointed. Always got the iphone on day 1 but that as now changed. It's in Apple's best interest to get a software fix (if possible) out ASAP. 5+ million is a lot of returns. I personally wouldn't use the compass to navigate, level to build but I do play games and having to tilt extra to offset the difference is unacceptable.

They may have legal issues, but it will end just like the class action lawsuit with the iphone 4. You had a choice of a case or $15. Apple never fixed the actual antenna for those with the problem.

Mind you it took 20 months for even that to happen.

For what its worth, I have a 32GB Silver/White AT&T 5S that is dead on in all orientations.

I ordered it 3AM EST from the Apple Store App and had it delivered in the first batch of deliveries from Apple.

All that means is that not all phones or all first batch phones have the issue.

Clearly its a problem a lot of people are experiencing.

When I wake my phone, I see a clear visual correction in the live wallpaper and at times in the home screen parallax when closing an app or returning from the multi-task view.

Are the phones with incorrect readings performing this visually apparent correction or failing to?

In any case, if there is a hardware issue, and it is well understood, it is very likely software can compensate... and it is also possible its completely a software issue since they are interfacing with some new hardware (the M7.) It's possible they are just "doing it wrong" when interfacing to the M7 to put it in lay terms.

Just a total guess but do you have background refresh of apps off? If so, does turning it back on help?

Mine is off by 3 degrees horizontal 0 vertical. Mine does this odd thing with the parallax too. There is another thread on that issue elsewhere on here.

We need to keep the pressure on Apple. Tell everyone you know about the problem. Use social media like Facebook and Twitter. Send feedback to Apple. Most tech sites have now published articles about it but still no response from Apple. We need them to admit there is a problem.

I assume you mean regarding the visual parallax and wallpaper corrections?

I have background refresh on.

There goes that theory :D

I think there is a good chance this weeks iOS update may address the issue... if not, the next update.

Honestly though, they will fix the reboots, resprings, crashes, and security issues first since they are more critical.

Is the inclinometer misscalibration a thing affecting iphone 5s devices only? Or is it something that plagues iphone 5cs as well?

I dont have proper measurement tools to double check but it appears my iphone 5c also has misscalibrated sensors.

Other iphone 5c users have such issues or no?

Not the same

Fully understood, but this is more serious than the iphone 4 issue. With the iphone 4, hold it differently or cover the side band with a case or protector. Problem solved. This is different and it impacts games and other apps that use the gyro. Plus, they just finished telling the world that M7 chip is going to change this iphone from all others with new fitness apps and etc. They'll have to fix it by software or silent replacement. They will not make an announcement (I'll be very surprised if they did) and many people that don't play games or use the level may never know there is a problem. $900 bucks is a lot of money to pay for the so called "Number 1 smartphone" and if Apple states it works a certain way, it'd better work as they stated. In this case, it doesn't. You can't compare the iphone 4 antenna to this issue, two totally different issues and this one has no quick fix.

Apple will have to respond soon before it gets seriously out of hand.
How are apps developers, especially games developers going to compensate for these issues in their new products.
As the 5s gains market share, I can't see developers producing one version of a racing game for the 5 and 5c and a 'wonky' version for the 5s

Exactly what 3rd party apps are affecting you? Not this "shoulda, coulda, woulda, sceneraio". It seems like a very easy fix for apple. Remember Apple doesn't cater to 3rd party apps it's the other way around. So please, what apps?

Not necessarily. I read an opinion piece about it and the author made a good point that even a broken watch reads the correct time twice a day.

But to clarify, the discrepancies are not consistent so some will randomly show the correct result.

Given that a lot of people have gone to stores and taken photos of display models with the same problem it would appear that every 5s is affected.

Mine is not affected.

One thing to bare in mind regarding whether Apple can keep this secret ...

If something happens thats going to fundamentally alter their bottom line (profit / revenue) they have to declare it... Apple are publically traded ... if they're facing a mass recall or excessive number of replacements and refurbishments (which if this is a hardware issue they will) over and above normal background levels they cannot keep this entirely secret.

If word gets out to mass-market that iPhone 5s is fundamentally flawed then sales will be impacted, replacement costs will be significant. Has the potential to impact Apples stock - i don't believe they can keep a lid on this for long.

Here's a video where someone demonstrates the issue with several different apps, starting with the level app then on to third party games:

i.e. anything relying on the gyro being correctly calibrated.

No problems here tested it with my iphone 5 both phones showing the same results maybe a faulty batch.

I'm no engineer, but I can't fathom how this couldn't easily be fixed with a software calibration.

I'd also like to note that a good chunk of the people who are making a racket about this "issue" would likely never have noticed it if it wasn't pointed out to them.

This is the downside to rapidly advancing technology. The second we stagnate, we fixate. When the tech makers are out of bigger ideas, they start cramming in smaller, fluffier niceties, like compasses and levels. With no big wow factors to distract us, we nit pick the niceties.

I couldn't agree more! Especially on the fixate issue, good luck trying to explain tho, I tried telling people this with the screen of the retina display iPad.

When you guys use ihandy and calibrate the iphone is on its side do you flip to the opposite and check it?

I calibrated my iphone 5s with ihandy on one side. Flipped it 180 degrees to opposite side when it should now say 0 degrees it says 1.4.

I have a bad feeling this is more than a calibration issue.

Do the volume and mute buttons protrude slightly on the 5s, as they do with the 4s? If so, you are bound to get a degree or so difference from one side to the other. Check your reading without the buttons getting in the way.

iPhone 5S 32GB ATT Space Gray owner here. I'm off 2 degrees on every side.

My roommate has a iPhone 5S 16GB Verizon Space Gray and his is off by about 1 degree on every side.

I'm calling Apple later today.
