I hope that .01 of 1 cent you probably saved on this new (POS) sensor was worth it Apple.

I agree. I also agree with the article. Apple will do nothing about it. It amazes me that no one thought about even testing that piece of hardware for accuracy at Apple before mass production. I always knew Bosch was crap, this just proves it. No sense waiting for 7.0.3 or 7.1. Neither will fix this issue. Maybe by the time the iphone 6 comes out, they will fix the problem, but for us 5s owners, we are screwed.

I decided to do some panoramic photo tests with my iphone 5 and 5s. My iphone 5 was consistently easier and smoother to line up the arrow with the line. Also I'm getting this weird bend distortion in the middle of my panoramic shots where i didn't see that in my iphone 5 shots. In no way is the a scientific test, but in my case this does affect pano shots.

I'll give Apple the benefit of the debt that they did it cause of the lower power consumption the new sensor is said to have and not for cost reason.

The issue maybe fixed in newer batches of the iPhone 5s being shipped. I reported a few posts up that someone I knew just received a iPhone 5s and the leveler was spot on.

The high bias of the new Bosch part means your best bet is to constantly return your phone for replacement until you get one that happens to have an offset of zero.

Apple's attempt to save a few cents could now end up costing it far more. It's only hope is generous/ignorant users who don't care about having a properly functioning device.

well, if this is indeed hardware I will just be keeping my 5C.

Can Apple not just stick the old chip in the 5S and do a silent recall so that if anyone goes to Apple with the issue they'll replace it with the fixed model?

I doubt they will do it though...just an idea. Looks like if you have a 5S you'll need to put up with it.

That really sucks, I hope it's not true...:(

Even if it is, by Apple's own documentation it isn't functioning as it should. This page makes no mention of tolerance or varying degrees of accuracy that fall within their spec. They will have to make our phones work as advertised, whether it's a software fix (I think it will be) or a hardware replacement.

The fact that they're so quick to tell people to leave it still for 90 minutes leads me to believe that that is how it's calibrated. I'm hoping a software issue is preventing that from happening, and they will update it to calibrate correctly.

I'm genuinely getting annoyed about these problems.............and yes I do have bigger problems before someone chimes in with that!

It is unacceptable to release something that is so poorly tested at any price point but this is top end money! They have so many niggles that they should have sorted out before mass production.

I see Tim Cook has been tweeting about how delighted he is with Apple getting planing permission for their new offices in California.......maybe his priorities need testing! :)

(I await a flaming! :))

That doesn't mean anything as there is no way to fix this in hardware since the sensor can be off anywhere from -5 to +5 degrees.

The only way to fix this is to correct for the bias in software. This is 100% doable by Apple, but they won't do it as it would require manual configuration by the user which would be against Apple's "it just works" philosophy.

Just a quick question when leveling if i tap the screen the color changes to black and red and then my phone shows 0 level. And when i tap again it just goes to black and white and it shows -3. That is screen fscing towards the roof.

Moreover what behaviour i am supposed to see if i run sky maps app?

Bought my 5s in store one week after release, called Applecare about gyro issue one week later, they sent me a replacement. I didn't think it would make any difference but after reading about someone getting a perfect zero on all sides replacement I thought i'd give it a go.

As expected the replacement also had the faulty gyro. I called Applecare again saying I wanted to return for a refund. They contact the Apple store where I purchased from and call me back to say the store won't accept the phone back because the handset was replaced by Applecare. Applecare now say they can't refund me because the phone was bought in store.

Anybody know where I stand legally? Can I go back to the store and insist on a refund? I haven't done so yet due to not being able to get over there until the weekend. 1.5 hrs round trip.

You could sue them for selling a defective product.

A class action suit may just be needed to get Apple to fix this.

For the first time in years I bought an iPhone with a carrier (Telekom, here in Germany). My two week return period (stated by Telekom) is up this Friday so I'm really not sure what to do. I have a week 37 phone and when led on its back on a flat surface it typically shows ~-4 degrees. When led on its long side it's even worse. My girlfriend took delivery of her 5s yesterday (also with Telekom) and on its back it shows -7 degrees. It's unbelievable. As I usually buy our iPhones off-contract and straight from Apple I'd usually be in the store now complaining and getting replacements until I find one I'm happy with. I'm just not sure what to do now as after reading all this I can't really decide whether I think it's a hardware or a software issue. I've seen a few people saying they're getting correct values on their newer-produced 5s but I can obviously only believe what I read on here. If I wait it out and cross my fingers for a fix this week then I'm out of my 14 days. If I arrange to send it back I might be out of a phone for a while (it took 3 weeks to deliver). Any advice? :)

Interesting followup by gizmodo. I, like most of you, would like feedback from apple regarding the issue.

I know it may not help, but I called Apple and I can get a white box replacement if I want to. (I tried to get a retail box replacement but they said there was no way). Even if the gyroscope issue isn't fixed, hopefully it will not have the other issues mine has such as loud vibrator and earpiece speaker that rattles with certain tones (not the power button or camera).

... or just wait to see if this is fixed through software. Maybe as early as this week...

I'm no longer happy waiting for something that MAY be coming and that MAY fix it. I wanted to have the power back in my hands and the money back in my account.

My advice... get your money back while you can.

I can understand why the store can't do the refund due to conflicting serial numbers on the replacement device versus the store bought device. However, I would assume that something could be done by Apple HQ in the form of a check or some type of collaboration with a physical location.

I would call Applecare again and work something out. Definitely reference the fact that there should be a paper trail of serial numbers from both devices. Good Luck!

There's an article on Engadget stating that apple may be using a new supplier for the accelerometer with a larger tolerance than the older part in the 5. The new tolerance is around +/- 5° which people are seeing and the older part had a smaller tolerance of +/- 1° which somewhat explains the variations in the 5 and 5s. The article also states that apple could provide a software fix to adjust for the bias, but who knows if apple will ever patch this problem. I have already swapped out my phone once and although it is slightly better than my last I do not want to waste my time swapping phones. Since I am one of these peeps that swap out my phone every year I will just wait for the next iteration and hopefully larger iphone. Till then I can only hope apple will provide some kind of software calibration in the near future.

Why did you swap it when there is no evidence that they changed anything in the hardware since the first one you got?

I returned my phone back to the retail store nearly two weeks ago because of this issue. I don't think that Apple are going to release 7.0.3 and will go to 7.1 on the 22nd. I am tempted to go back and purchase another 5s next week (hopefully a build week 42) and see if the problem has been fixed via an hardware upgrade.
If it isn't fixed then I could keep the phone until 7.1 is released and still return the phone within the 14 day window if 7.1 failed to resolve the problem.
