I am looking forward in the next few days to hear reports from week 42 build owners.

That is nice to hear that there are actually phones out there that are not "off".

Could you maybe tell us where and when it was produced ?
You can look it up in the internet here:
http://www.chipmunk.nl/klantenservice/applemodel.html
I already mentioned it above.
Mine is C3 week 37, white, T-Mobile version.
A friend of mine also has a good one. Hers is C3 week 38, white AT&T.

I'm more than sure that this is hard to be patched with just a software fix.
How are they gonna handle the good ones then?

I suggest you guys wait for better phones to arrive. They just need to tighten up the calibration QC at the factories.

Anyone tried those apps using the M7? Any of those apps with inbuilt calibration? And works fine off the M7 data?

I swapped mine out at the apple store today due to reasons other than the gyroscope. I tried to return but could not since I was day 28.

First iphone 5s I bought launch day. it was week 38, C3 China. -4 on back, 3 on bottom (button side), and -2 on right side.

White box replacement is week 35, DN China. -1 on back, 1 on bottom (button side) and -1 on right side.

I asked the employee about the gyroscope and he told me they have replaced 3 for gyroscope reasons.

The same way they would have to handle the fact that every phone is off by different amounts.

Returned my week 38 5s today

I talked with Apple on the phone today, and they denied hearing about the accelerometer being off target and improperly calibrated. They gave me 30 days to return it.

But when I stopped by the Apple store for a case today they said that ATT would only give me 14 days to return the 5s (we got an upgrade subsidy). After 14 days I would be stuck with the extra 2 years on the contract and no subsidy on a new phone if I returned it after 14 days but still wanted a new one later. They also said I was the first person to bring a 5s back to the store for this issues.

Mine was off between -2 and -3 so with a significant tilt ended to drive racing games straight. See attached photo, which is showing up attached upside down and had to be uploaded several times before it looked right on my iPad.

They offered to take it back and give me a new retail phone, but they only had a 16Gb Gold and I wanted another 64Gb model. Nobody else in CO had one, so I'd have to call online where I bought it, and have them send a replacement that would likely still have the issue when it arrived in 2 weeks.

So I went ahead and returned it at 11 days, rather than come back Saturday or Sunday to return it. I considered waiting a few days for a software update, but have no confidence that Apple is working on it when everyone denies it's a problem. Until today, because now the local store knows that the first 4 phones we checked there are all off 1-3 degrees too.

I'm still eligible for a new phone upgrade now, so when Apple gets their act together I'll order another one.

The phone comes with a 1 year warranty from Apple. While they are right that after 14 days, you will be stuck with a 2 year contract, you still can get your phone replaced/repaired after 14 days since it is a hardware problem.

True, but there is nothing wrong with my 1 year old iPhone 5 or my 2 year old 4s so I went back to the 5 (with unlocked 4s as backup) until this is resolved. I'm a little OCD about having the serial number and IMEI on the box match my phone.

Also, ATT would never unlock my 3Gs after 2 years because it had been replaced by apple genius near the end of Applecare warranty, and I couldn't get them (ATT) to acknowledge that the phone really was mine. I don't want that trouble again.

So:

  1. The assumption that this is due to a cheaper accelerometer with less accuracy is wrong: the part in the 5S is actually really accurate, but has some bias like all these parts do.
  2. The procedure that the Realitycap guy is suggesting for calibration sounds suspiciously like the procedure Apple has been asking people to do (90min undisturbed on a flat surface) that doesn't seem to work.

Interesting. Sounds like the problem is a software bug to me.

UPDATE: I didn't see this posted yet...

It seems like the part in question may not be a Bosch part, and that the resolution may actually be 20 bits as opposed to 6 bits as previously reported. Information here, or you can follow this link to go directly to the blog post (where all the details are).

you're right but our replacements will be refurbished ones... BOOOOO!!!!!!

A refurbished iPhone after 3 months (for example) is still newer than an iPhone you've had for 3 months as the screen, all casing, and the battery are brand new. You also keep the same warranty you had on your original iPhone. I had my iPhone 5 replaced around 3 months after release and the refurbished model had a much better home button (and that wasn't even the reason it was replaced). I was getting a little worried reading so much about the 14 day thing but I guess that only really matters if you want 1) a full refund (so you can maybe wait it out for a while) or 2) to be able to roll the dice with a new early build again. I'd rather wait it out personally as it seems that almost everyone in this thread that got a replacement in store or via AppleCare ended up with a bad one again.

I am talking to a Senior Apple tech and she clearly mentioned that its a software issue and its NOT a hardware is what they/she has mentioned and they will have a update out really shortly is what she said.

Thanks for sharing, I really hope it can be fixed by a software update.

I assume we're waiting for 7.1 now and not 7.0.3.

This has to be somewhat embarrassing to apple that a 3rd party has to come up with a solution to provide to developers.

It's pretty clear that this can be fixed via software and I feel apple will eventually address this as it is spreading more and more.

Here is an apparent fix, but I have to say that I would prefer it was an Apple fix rather than a third party, although it may be left to developers to fix on an individual basis:

I have a feeling that if all the units in the future start showing up corrected then apple is most likely calibrating them before leaving the factory. This is more likely then changing anything hardware wise on the production line. Hopefully they will give this solution to the Genius Bar to do for us as I really don't want to swap my phone.

I will be interested to see if anyone who gets a build 42 phone next week reports the same problem

I am tempted to pick another phone up next week and keep returning them under the 14 day exchange period until I get one that's right
