You're absolutely incorrect. That is, unless Apple has changed how they report sold. Apple has always counted a sale to be sale to an individual and ultimate user. This was Jobs original argument with record labels, who thought their customers were the retail stores; Apple and Jobs changed all that. Except for Apple, the Samsungs, HPs, Microsofts of the world continue to count shipments to retailers as sales.

Apple does not count shipments to Best Buy, Walmart, AT&T, Verizon stores as sales. A sale for Apple occurs only when the Best Buys of the world actually make a sale to a customer.

I'm not sure that is correct. But does it even matter? It's not like retailers have a bunch of unsold phones sitting in a back stockroom somewhere.

So, your saying they were behind before this launch. Well, lets take your theory. The 5c is the 5 with color case and maybe a few tweaks to make it marginally better then last years 5. The 5s, what did you guys get. A better flash, A7 (64 bit), dedicated Motion Chip, a 15% better camera and Touch ID sensor. Everyone can get or got iOS 7.

I am not sure they really are back in front. They still lack the large screen iPhone that the others are selling and that loyal iPhone users are requesting and have been for a few years now. Where is NFC? Still not in the iPhone. iOS7 is still iOS. So, they gave you a new "Control Center" and they refreshed the looks of their Icons. But, what really is innovating about the OS that has basically been the same since it's original release?

Now, don't get me wrong, I love my iPhone 5 and yes, I will probably get the iPhone 5s...maybe, if I can get enough for my iPhone 5 to cover the cost for the upgrade. But I don't agree that it's on top again. Still lacks where others have taken off in and now another year behind them. So, I would say it's still a neck and neck race to who has the best smart phone on the market.

Interesting. What would you consider to be the best smartphone currently available? Yes I would like the option of a larger screen version but I'm not sure I would necessarily buy it as I prefer to travel light. I agree that iOS is behind the competition in terms of some innovative features but as a Mac user I like the simplicity of keeping everything within the Apple ecosystem.

I think the 64bit architecture and touch ID are more important than you might think. Nobody else is doing that in my experience or at least not to the same level of simplicity. I hope they extend the touch ID feature to the Mac.

I would agree that the initial sales spike maybe does not accurately reflect the market dynamics now. Apple is under attack from cheap Chinese makers and high end makers with larger screens and more innovative OS, so I don't think the next year is going to be plain sailing by any means but I do think these phones will appeal to the Apple faithful, which is probably enough to keep the cash rolling in.

I think you’re missing the point.

Doesn’t matter if they have increased or decreased the amount of countries at launch.

The point being they have been able to place 9million orders and have them shipped in 3 days.

Clearly there’s no deliberate constraining of orders and they’ve able to mobilize the building, the inventory and the shipping of the units.

By adding countries just means they’ve got better and building and shipping not that there’s more people who want the phones.

The demand was always there. The other countries just had to wait longer last time.

In short the 9 million is 9 million in 3 days and not 30 days like last time.

Impressive as no company wants to build inventory and have them sit in warehouses like Surface.

No billion dollar write downs here.

In all fairness, they aren't shipping all 9 million in 3 days.

I'm not sure this is correct. Especially since I've seen contradictory information elsewhere and sales are counted differently in investor reporting.

Apple reports units shipped in their quarterly numbers as well.

ok but...

I don't understand why people is so excited?

I mean, this year they have two models and do not forget they had China this time. So, you can't compare this numbers with those from last year...

Another way of looking at it, is this:

The 4S was a damn fine phone. And it still is.
It's users are happy with it — and when they will finally switch, they'll probably buy an iPhone again — because now they know, that a new iPhone will last a long time.

True. I don't use a case and my 4S looks like it's brand new. To me, it was the best form factor for a phone ever. It just felt so much better than the newer phones for me. I am a casual user so some of the spec bumps on the new one did not mean as much.. I will have to check it out though.

No. Pre-orders have always been counted as the opening weekend sales, so long as they ship by then (credit cards only get charged once a phone is shipped, which turns a pre-order into a sale).

Hey is there an easy way to find out if someone already answered a post on MacRumors? I figured someone would have already pointed out Kendo's error, but didn't want to go through more than a couple of pages of posts looking for prior art...

I don't think that is possible. I may be wrong though. Just easier to answer.

Taking all that in to account most analysts still were not predicting 9M. Eternal Apple optimist Gene Munster's prediction was 5-6M.

and in other news this weekend, BlackBerry failed miserably in launching an app.

Sad to see them fall.

While I agree that the BBM app launch for iOS and Android was a total flop, it wasn't all sunshine and lollipops for Apple this weekend, either. The Apple TV 6.0 software release was marred with major problems and was eventually taken down by Apple. That's really bad.

I'm not sure how Apple couldn't have seen the update brick Apple TVs during in-house QA testing especially since there aren't that many configurations to test compatibility against since the Apple TV isn't especially configurable by the end-user.

Oh please....

Give me a SINGLE example of somebody that "must" buy a phone from Apple.

No? Then kindly ****.

Of course you don't have to. But you pay a price for switching. I would loose a great deal of music integration in my house and all of my ap store purchaces? Did not think that was a hard concept to get. For me it would take one hell of a competitor phone to get me to switch for those reasons alone. So you can kindly *****

New record for weekend sales? I wonder if this record would hold if we were able to pre-order the 5S. Surely that would bring opening weekend numbers down, no?

Quite the contrary, just like album charts preoders all count for launch weekend sales. So if Apple allowd the 5s to be be preordered, they would have probably sold more - and ran out of inventory faster (which IMO is why they did not allow preorders, it's embarrasing not have any inventory left for the actual launch day)

Ok....This is INSANELY impressive. 9mil? That is incredible. Apple is not going anywhere. I just received my shipping notification for my gold 16 gig!!!!!!!!! What a great start of a day!

Surely, if you are going to compare the sales of the 5S and 5C, you should compare it to the last year sales of the 5 AND the 4S (same internal relation as the 5S & 5C have).

Also, how many of that 9 million are 5C's and 5S'?

Also, they also introced their products in new markets, so how are the sales compared if you only look at the US?

You can't just blindly look at that 9M number, doesn't represent the evolution of the sales per specific market.
there is a flipside to your logic, Apple did not have to make a major design change or introduce a larger size phone. That alone is amazing

But analyst predicted 12 million in 3 days in a newly uncovered document from Goldman Sachs.
Apple stock will tumble below $200.00!!!!
Now, tell me if some douche won't be selling their gold iPhone on ebay for a ridiculous amount of money.
