Yes it was.

The iPhone 4 is an iPhone 3GS with redesigned body, laminated front glass, doubled RAM (256MB -> 512MB) and the retina display, oh, and the front facing camera and the flashlight! Same CPU with higher clock speed (600MHz -> 800MHz), Same GPU. Pretty big changes except the computing power.

The iPad (1) is an iPhone 3GS with larger body, larger screen with higher resolution but lower PPI, same RAM (256MB, half of the iPhone 4), same CPU, sans the camera.

4 - cosmetic redesign only

+faster processor, better camera, retina display

4S - improved internals, faster, better cameras and extra features to take advantage of better innards. Easily supports all latest iOS features.

+siri

5 - cosmetic redesign only

+faster processor, better camera, larger display.....

Judging by previous years, faster processor, better camera at the very least.....

Theres no way the 4 is a big upgrade. The 4 and 3G are the least upgraded iPhones from the previous gen.

The poster is wrong about the 5, that was a major change. But he's right about the 4. There was little to no raw processing gain or capabilities added on the 4. The internal chip is the same as the 3GS.

THe key is to look for architechtural changes in the processor.

iPhone/iPhone3G: Same chip

iPhone 3GS/4: Same Chip

iPhone 4S: New chip

iPhone 5: New chip.

A smart person would buy the original iPhone, the 3GS, the 4S, and then the 5.

If the 5S is a new architecture, it'll also be a good upgrade. If not, it isnt.

Simple.
Who cares about the chip ffs. Iphone 4 had a totally new and great design. It was the first phone with the "wrap around" antenna, it had the Retina screen with best resolution on the market. Actually the first one. It had a GREAT camera, it was fast and it was reliable and build quality was superb. Oh and yes, it had a faster processing power than 3gs (if you care sooo much about that damn chip). And yet still you say that it was just a "cosmetic" update? Seriously, you have NO idea what you're talking about.

Increase the screen size!
Increase the screen size!
Increase the screen size!
Increase the screen size!
Increase the screen size!
Increase the screen size!

Maybe next year :)

Not shocked. Bored.

3G to 3GS was a really nice upgrade cause the 3G was sluggish. 4 to 4S was also a nice upgrade because of HSPA+ and better reception.

Now that we have LTE, plenty of RAM, fast enough processor & 1080p camera in the 5, they will essentially be giving us the same phone if all the do is update the parts in the 5S.

No thanks, Apple.

Hopefully they have something else up their sleeve for the 5S.

You're right... iPhones today are pretty much all they need to be. They are amazing machines. So maybe you don't need to buy every single iPhone from now on ;)

My point was... Apple has been doing the tick-tock sequence for a while now. The 5S was almost certainly gonna be a simple refresh of the iPhone 5. You knew it was coming.

If the iPhone 5S won't be all that different from the iPhone 5... why not just keep your iPhone 5? No one is forcing you to get a new phone :)

Oh right... you're bored... and you must have a new phone every year (even if it means leaving iOS for Android)

Man... I hate to see you leave after 6 years with an iPhone. Good luck though. :D

The iPhone 5S isn't solely for people who already have an iPhone 5 anyway.

A "person" may only upgrade once every 2 years... but "people" upgrade every day. That's who the iPhone 5S is for.

Many products get slight updates every year... but you're not expected to buy every year. Companies just like to have "fresh" products every once in a while.

Even though some extra features and even sizes would be nice I do wonder what some want to see. What would be amazing? A new design in itself is just that, more power and a new style, likely how things will be for some time. Still enjoying the iPhone 4S as it is a great phone, curious what will come after the iPhone 5S.

They really need to bit the bullet and introduce a larger (please NOT longer) screen now.

Any news on when we'll likely see a 5th gen iPad? My iPad2 is beginning to croak now.

But KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said it would have a fingerprint scanner! This is obviously 100% fake.

ok. again no fingerprint sensor on this years iPhone, and with this no NFC and no mobile payments solution from apple :(

the fingerprint scanner could be on the back so a swipe could be made with the natural way you hold ur phone. In fact, if you remember early rumored parts for the 5, there was a small rectangular void in the top left (opposite camera) Precisely where your index finger might be when holding the phone. No one ever figured out what the mystery void was, but I do remember it was almost the exact size of whatever new FP scanner was coming out. So I wouldnt rule it out just yet.

And just curious, how from this article/photo can u surmise that there would be no sensor? A bare logic board? The home button? I can't figure out how you could determine this.

This fall is what the analysts are saying. iPad Mini w/Retina Display too.

It is subjective; I hated the 'design' of the 4 compared to the 'style' of the 3 ... The phone that wiped the floor with all competitors! I upgraded to the 4 because Apple gave people little choice as far as ongoing support ; the same with apps. Hated it though; felt uncomfortable next to the 3 and although the materials were 'more solid', they didn't look and feel as nice IMO. My 3 back cover lasted 3 years whilst the 4 just 2 months, so I laugh when people call plastic like its some cheap nasty material when in fact it is proven to be better than all cases after it! As for the 5 ... Hated it ... Too bland, too boring, not enough difference between the 4 ... and another issue with the scratching and maps! Of course the 4 sold more than the 3 ... The reasons why are pretty clear; but they're nothing to do with its refreshed design.

I have since moved to the S4 - it's a FAR better phone in my opinion; a GLORIOUS screen, fast, great features (love wireless charging and SD expansion) and it feels great in the hand. Yes, it is made of plastic on the back; but I have no issue with this as I had no issue with the iPhone 3. In fact, I refer the pastic back of the S4 to the easily to ruin iPhone 5.

As for all the iPhone users that bitch about the S4 Having a pastic back, that's just desperation in calling the competition; as is calling the display too big or non true to life colours. Even you quote the galaxy as being plastic; highlighting your ignorance and jealousy as far as I'm concerned; and having owned an iPhone 5 previously, all I'll say in reply is you enjoy your metal scratch and dint prone case, your small screen, lack of expansion, wireless charging and outdated OS (which laughably, for ios7, Apple seem to be copying from android and windows. Shameful!!!)

Awaiting silly responses from isheep!

Chad, let's be honest. You guys have WAY MORE sheep over on your Island Nation. The dudes on Top Gear are always having to freakin stop for Sheep in the roads.

Let's keep fact straight, eh? :apple:

.
Seriously?

Honest question, does anyone really care (here or in the general public) about these 'S' release iPhones? It's the same phone, a little faster, 1-2 more megapixels. We are highly unlikely to see fingerprint readers or NFC.

I can see the Samsung commercials now... ohhh is that the "new" iPhone.

Keep bumping those phones, Samsung.

What in the world are you using your phone for? I'm not saying you're a liar or anything but I've honestly never had any problems with any of my 4 iterations and they've all been heavily used. I've also not heard of this problem from any of the dozens of iphone users I know.

In Harrison's defense, I received a replacement iPhone 5 when my sleep/wake button went bad. At the store, the employee told me that the home button is the most commonly replaced part on the phone - everything else is usually takes a beating and works fine. So, I think, regardless of what he uses his phone for, I believe the dude in the Apple store.

Someone who wants a smaller screen phone

You have now met someone who wants a smaller screen phone. Something the size of a Nokia 5530 would be perfect, 2.9" screen (but works better). I can easily carry it and it is the perfect size to throw in your pocket and accomplish tasks such as photos, emails, making calls, texts, maps and some light browsing. For anything else I use my ipad maxi/mini.

Actually something the size of an 8310 would be even better but that might be a bit too small!

I have had every iphone apart from the first. I've also had every Samsung Galaxy phone upto SIII. I learnt my lesson at the SIII!

If I think the 5 is a bit big, I can tell you that the Galaxy phones have got WAY too big. The S was a little too large, SII was a little bit bigger, and I won't even take the SIII out unless my iphone is flat. It's too big to fit easily in anything but coat pockets, too flimsy to risk hanging out of jean pockets, and a pain the backside to use.

well this is even more depressing news than the leaked iphone 5. I don't even want a huge phone, just one with a screen i can actually read. Whhhyyy is that so hard? Everyone else is making them and billions of dollars. I've never heard a single person say that they wished the iphone screen was smaller. Plenty of people say they like the size of their iphone screen, but it's only because they like they're iphone, everyone does.

Good news that the screen size hasn't increased!

Why is that good news? You don't want a choice of having a bigger screen size?

----------

I know only two people personally who have a home button problem, that's out of probably 75 iPhone users.

I don't know... I've had a few home button problems. And a few on/off button problems which is probably rarer. I think Apple could make the home button better. Maybe they did with the 5, as I haven't had any problems with the home button on the 5, but I did have my on/off button not work which I got a replacement for.

Man, I can't wait to get one of these new iPhones with the new 'vertically oriented connector'!

Why is that good news? You don't want a choice of having a bigger screen size?

It baffles me why some people just hate the idea of options. It's like one size fits all because we say so trumps the notion of two sizes fit twice as many.

Maybe they did with the 5, as I haven't had any problems with the home button on the 5, but I did have my on/off button not work which I got a replacement for.

During my time working for Apple retail, our top three iPhone issues were home buttons, sleep/wake buttons, and battery life. Fourth was water damage.

All in all, I think the industry as a whole needs to start moving away from physical buttons on handsets. In Apple's case, they can darn sure make the thing smaller.

Why wait? Quit bitching and switch now. Get Jay-Z's new album yo!

So I guess having an opinion is considered bitching now? I guess my head isn't as far up Apple's azz as yours so what I say is bitching? Lol. Ok.

Based on a logic board?:eek:

Based on probability and predictability. 3G/3GS - 4/4S - 5/5S? - Seems like the same phone with updated internals later this year.

Again, I would be very surprised if it was a larger screen/newer phone. Unlikely. Apple has become predictable. Never a good thing in the tech world.

Apple has their established pattern, but I was hoping that they would shake things up a bit. They had their internal shakeup, ios7 is deviating from established pattern, was it so much of a stretch to hope for something new?

IMO the iPhone 5 isn't a worthy upgrade for my 4S. 5s won't really be either. 6 might have been

Thanks for the informative and highly constructive reply ... Yawn.

You're not bias are you? I have a S3 and a S4 (work related) so I am not unaware what they offer. The first thing I found annoying on them were the "big screen" The phone was no longer usable in one hand, buttons on the side kept clicking themselves while being held normally. As for iOS 7 copying Android, my opinion is iOS 7 is what all the android handset UI designers wished it could be, unfortunately android still feels unfinished, dropping new versions before the previous version was done and taking nearly half a year before it gets to the devices. I remember reading Jellybean being released, went to update nothing. waited a month, click update nothing, waited a month clicked update nothing.

Its great you enjoy your new S4, its great to brad about hardware specs, but please just cause someone prefers an iPhone doesn't make them iSheep but that's probably hard to get through to you since you feel the need to justify your S4 purchase

BTW I don't know what wireless charging you have, but there's a big fat wire on the charging mat that I have the put the phone onto.

I'm not biased no, I've owned every iteration of the iPhone, own a host of Apple products and now I have the Samsung as IMO it's a better phone ... Live with it! As for my isheep coment, there's a big difference between someone (like me) that buys and enjoys Apple products and someone that is the definition of a sheep.

Wireless charging means no wires going into the phone. Of course the mat has a wire; me having to explain this to you just highlights your stupidity I guess!
