I've purchased every model since the beginning at/around launch day. The news of this one just bores me to death. Unless the screen is bigger or there is a design change I won't be buying it.

Maybe it's time to spend the next year with a android.... S4 with stock android? Hmmm

So you've purchased every iPhone model since 2007... but you didn't notice the design pattern?

Ever since the 3G... Apple has done a tick-tock pattern:

3G --> 3GS
4 --> 4S
5 --> 5S

I don't know why you're suddenly shocked by it.

As a holdout still on iPhone 4 I hate to say, but I want a bigger screen too.
Less bezel more screen! I'd be fine with bigger dimensions as well though.

Some of the android phones are nice, but I really want ios battery life.

N00b statement here, but (ignoring gaming requirements) at some point in time CPU/GPU/RAM etc are all going to reach a point where spec upgrades are no longer necessary.....yeah?

I would love to be surprised by Apple. Imagine if this 5s leak was a diversion to confuse actual leaks, and on release day we saw something new: like a bigger screen and some gorgeous aluminum. Imagine the headlines, the fanboys, the competition.

It's incredible that more people are not making iphone or even ios concept photos. Here are a few made by "adr studio" (some dude in italy). Some are years old... I think for the iphone 6 he gave up on apple.

first iphone was a 3GS 32Gb and then upgraded to 4S 64Gb. wife switched from android and has a 32Gb 5 and IMHO I think the size is just about perfect for me. we don't own any other apple products and I have never even owned an iPod (had some creative zens). my wife LOVES how her iphone 5 works as expected and very user friendly.

to each his/her own though... big screen, little screen, ios, android... it's great to have choices. I kept a "dumb phone" until my personal needs for a smart phone were met (lots of capacity for music, nice quality camera, and decent battery life = 3GS)... all this new technology just keeps spoiling us more and more and I get an entertaining kick out of reading the MR forums for people who want more more more or some variation of a certain technology that they just must have. be happy with what you have... use it until you just HAVE to have the next thing... for some it's every iteration or back and forth between android/ios... for others it's until a phone has a particular feature that they must have. again, to each it's own.

my 4s is still kicking a** and I did upgrade from a 3GS whose home button finally went crazy after 2 years of normal use. I've been due for an upgrade for a while and i may or may not go with the 5s.... if it has the same form factor of the 5 with at least 64Gb with a slightly better battery... that just might be enough for me personally. better camera and internals would be added bonuses.

as someone who has an B.S. in Electrical Engineering and has designed circuit boards and wrote firmware (even had to do some assembly language, ughhhh)... I appreciate the growth of technology and all the amazing things these little smart devices can do for us. pretty much everything on the market is 1,000,000 (probably a lot more) times better than my first cell phone that cost like $30/month for 30 minutes and needed to be charged daily whether used or not. then i got the handspring visor which I was hoping could be the ultimate GPS/PDA/phone/music player...

wow! isn't technology great?!?!

my dream device would be something like my wife's iphone 5 with a display that can be folded out and/or projected much larger... and where the phone shell itself is a long-life battery that can be charged up traditionally, via solar, or kinetically.

The doom-sayer trolls on this thread crack me up! By the way, are you being paid by Samsung?!?! Ha! :D

The 5S or whatever they call it will be just as big a success as any other phone Apple has produced - which is huge. Plus you're forgetting about the cheaper phone Apple is working on. That one will certainly take off in emerging markets. Apple is a master at shaking it up by introducing a revolutionary new product (iMac, iPod, iPhone, iPad) and first taking the high end of the market (where the profit is), then gradually filling in all the medium and lower price points below (iPods are a perfect example). I have no doubt they'll continue to do so. Will you see a low cost iPhone? - pretty certain. A 'phablet' iPhone? - probably. But it won't be a plastic POS. They won't do it unless they can do it right. And they won't do it in a way that will disrupt the developer community. They'll want all those 900,000 apps in the App Store to look and work beautifully with the new screen size right out of the box.

So my money is on the 5s and a low-cost iPhone (iPhone Mini?) this fall. Then probably a phablet in the first half of 2014. And I personally don't mind the yearly Apple upgrade cycle. I skip a generation because of my phone contract, so I had the 3, then the 4, and now the 5. Have loved all of them (I still use my old 3 as an iPod). When I upgraded to the 5, I was able to sell my 4 for almost what it cost me to buy the 5 with a 2 year contract. No other phone holds its value so well.

Not shocked. Bored.

3G to 3GS was a really nice upgrade cause the 3G was sluggish. 4 to 4S was also a nice upgrade because of HSPA+ and better reception.

Now that we have LTE, plenty of RAM, fast enough processor & 1080p camera in the 5, they will essentially be giving us the same phone if all the do is update the parts in the 5S.

No thanks, Apple.

Hopefully they have something else up their sleeve for the 5S.

It is subjective; I hated the 'design' of the 4 compared to the 'style' of the 3 ... The phone that wiped the floor with all competitors! I upgraded to the 4 because Apple gave people little choice as far as ongoing support ; the same with apps. Hated it though; felt uncomfortable next to the 3 and although the materials were 'more solid', they didn't look and feel as nice IMO. My 3 back cover lasted 3 years whilst the 4 just 2 months, so I laugh when people call plastic like its some cheap nasty material when in fact it is proven to be better than all cases after it! As for the 5 ... Hated it ... Too bland, too boring, not enough difference between the 4 ... and another issue with the scratching and maps! Of course the 4 sold more than the 3 ... The reasons why are pretty clear; but they're nothing to do with its refreshed design.

I have since moved to the S4 - it's a FAR better phone in my opinion; a GLORIOUS screen, fast, great features (love wireless charging and SD expansion) and it feels great in the hand. Yes, it is made of plastic on the back; but I have no issue with this as I had no issue with the iPhone 3. In fact, I refer the pastic back of the S4 to the easily to ruin iPhone 5.

As for all the iPhone users that bitch about the S4 Having a pastic back, that's just desperation in calling the competition; as is calling the display too big or non true to life colours. Even you quote the galaxy as being plastic; highlighting your ignorance and jealousy as far as I'm concerned; and having owned an iPhone 5 previously, all I'll say in reply is you enjoy your metal scratch and dint prone case, your small screen, lack of expansion, wireless charging and outdated OS (which laughably, for ios7, Apple seem to be copying from android and windows. Shameful!!!)

Awaiting silly responses from isheep!

You're not bias are you? I have a S3 and a S4 (work related) so I am not unaware what they offer. The first thing I found annoying on them were the "big screen" The phone was no longer usable in one hand, buttons on the side kept clicking themselves while being held normally. As for iOS 7 copying Android, my opinion is iOS 7 is what all the android handset UI designers wished it could be, unfortunately android still feels unfinished, dropping new versions before the previous version was done and taking nearly half a year before it gets to the devices. I remember reading Jellybean being released, went to update nothing. waited a month, click update nothing, waited a month clicked update nothing.

Its great you enjoy your new S4, its great to brad about hardware specs, but please just cause someone prefers an iPhone doesn't make them iSheep but that's probably hard to get through to you since you feel the need to justify your S4 purchase

BTW I don't know what wireless charging you have, but there's a big fat wire on the charging mat that I have the put the phone onto.

3GS - improved internals, faster, better cameras and extra features to take advantage of better innards. Easily supports all latest iOS features.

4 - cosmetic redesign only

4S - improved internals, faster, better cameras and extra features to take advantage of better innards. Easily supports all latest iOS features.

5 - cosmetic redesign only

5S - ?

It's Apple tick-tock style for iPhone development. Nothing's wrong with that and I'd take S revision anytime.

What are the possibilities?

  • Larger screen: Would be a welcome option
  • NFC: Possibly, but no rumors to that effect recently
  • Biometric identification: Good possibility, would be great if done well
  • Haptic feedback: I seem to remember rumors about this a couple of iterations ago, nothing since
Other changes (better camera, more memory, faster processors) are just incremental improvements that we've seen with each new iPhone.

Personally, I'd like the first three items on my list, but that's unlikely to happen until the iPhone 6, haptic feedback later still. But even without a larger display, I'll probably get one, since I've been upgrading every second round.

It does when a "S" phone is your first phone or the two-year replacement for your last "S" phone.

My first iPhone was a 4S.

When I become eligible again in August, I will likely get the 5S.

The thing is, rumors about an "S" version are pointless, you know exactly what it is going to be like. Just a minor speed bump, slightly better camera, and a gimmick feature (like Siri was).

:apple:

Camera bump and Speed bump is all it will be... Standard really.

NFC and Fingerprint will come in iPhone 6 - too dramatic for an "S" release me thinks...

Will be time to upgrade my old faith 3GS.

It's done me well and I'd like to get IOS 7 so it's time to make the upgrade.

I think larger screen is the only change that will attract me now. I know they have this "big screens are not practical" attitude over at apple... but it's time.

Because of that, a likely scenario is that they have 2 different models with different screen sizes, which is what I'm hoping for.

Fair enough, but by default, i'm pretty sure iOS 7 will drain the battery faster than iOS 6. It's just a matter of how much it will. Especially since we will have dynamic icons and such.

Which may well be cancelled out by the features they announced to save battery life. I do take your point, but let's see what the actual release brings.

all these years and still no front facing speakers ! I'm tired of cupping my hand

All these years and still no front-facing back plate.

Okay... I guess it may have to do with the clean look and aesthetics of the device. Anyway the tiny little speaker isn't going to sound good. I'd suggest you to use earphones or external speakers.

Uh....The iPhone 5 was FAR more powerful than the 4s, had an upgaded front facing camera, 3 mics, a bigger screen and some decent improvements to the rear camera as well. It was not a cosmetic redesign. Neither was the 4.

Yes it was.

people really need to stop buying iPhones for a while to send apple a message :p and thats me saying being on my 4th iphone generation ^^

Good luck sticking to the past

Nokia n95, HTC One etc. they all have great stereo audio with tiny speakers.

YOU have never had. I, along with tons of other Apple users, have.

That sounds like operator error which doesn't mean it isn't a hardware defect of course. But repeated ssame fault from the same people?

I know only two people personally who have a home button problem, that's out of probably 75 iPhone users.
