Theres no way the 4 is a big upgrade. The 4 and 3G are the least upgraded iPhones from the previous gen.
The poster is wrong about the 5, that was a major change. But he's right about the 4. There was little to no raw processing gain or capabilities added on the 4. The internal chip is the same as the 3GS.
THe key is to look for architechtural changes in the processor.
iPhone/iPhone3G: Same chip
iPhone 3GS/4: Same Chip
iPhone 4S: New chip
iPhone 5: New chip.
A smart person would buy the original iPhone, the 3GS, the 4S, and then the 5.
If the 5S is a new architecture, it'll also be a good upgrade. If not, it isnt.
Simple.
iPhone 3GS and 4 did not have the same chip. They were similar, but the iPhone 4 had much higherclocks, twice as much memory, a better camera, faster 3G, gyroscopes, noise canceling microphones, and the retina display. It was a major upgrade over the 3GS, and I would argue a greater upgrade than any other iPhone.
I agree the 3G wasn't a great upgrade, but edge sucked. 3GS was a good upgrade. 4s while technically better than the 4 did not offer vastly improved usability like the 3GS and 4 did. The 5 wasn't much better than the 4s in terms of usability either. Apple has been stagnating, and I was hoping they would surprise us this time.
