iPhone 5s Inventory Said to Be 'Severely Constrained' at Launch

There is no mostly right. It only takes one component to delay the production of an entire phone. His failure to acknowledge the probable existence of such components makes him entirely wrong.

Fair enough. I think his post was just misunderstood. He didn't need to be hammered though.

Just when I think Apple users are well-rounded and far from paranoid...

Teh Samsung plants iz all over these forumz. Jesus Christ...

And my money is on the A7. The new process node and new architecture has probably killed the yields. It will ramp up though. The sky isn't falling here. Plenty of 28nm experience out there, maybe not so much silicon though.

I don't see this launch being too bad. Everyone that wants one will have it this year. We all know that.

And I was using Apple computers (this is what they were called before the Macintosh came out, FYI) in, hmm, something like 1983? So what.

The 5C is going to sell extremely well. Ludicrously. It's going to be the iPod mini of the iPhone line -- another product that everyone debunked, before it went on to crush every iPod sales metric ever.

Who will be buying up iPhone 5Cs in the literal millions?

• The huge number of people who are still using feature phones and will be able to get the 5C for free or nearly free w/ subsidy. It will probably be my Mom's first smartphone. She will love it. She doesn't need a 5S.

• China, India, Russia, Brazil-- it's going to be selling in droves, but hey, we shall see, right?

That's what you people don't get - the 5C is actually for the impoverished/over-indebted US masses, not BRIC countries. And why?

I am Brazilian and we have the world's most expensive iPhone already. Is the iPhone selling well over there? Yes, to the millions of upper middle class citizens who don't really care as long as they get a nice device and a status symbol; the really poor in Brazil won't matter for this metric. Likewise for Russia, China etc.

Besides, the 5C price difference is virtually ZERO compared to the current iPhone 5. So no, the 5C will NOT be Apple's "stealth" weapon into the lower and overcrowded smartphone layer...forget about it.

i'm goign to guess that it'll have 1.5gb or 2 because ios7 is so graphic heavy. just a guess

Apple always fails to meet my expectations on RAM, therefore... I stopped having those expectations years ago ;)

1.5gb won't happen. Doubling RAM is much much more common. Only a handful of phones have 1.5gb. They were produced in 2011ish.

2gb would hold Apple over for quite a few years as it is a nice sweet spot for iOS.

I don't expect it though and I truly hope I am wrong.

Lovin' all the hilarious sarcastic responses in this thread. Slightly concerned at the number of folks who don't recognize them as such ;)

Personally, I don't mind waiting but I gotta have the gold one for the faster WiFi speeds.

Yes, the gold one is faster than the other two colors. People missed that small tid bit in the specs.

Some folks are speculating that A7 is 22nm and possibly made by Intel. If TSMC, who announced that 20nm SOC is slated "early 2014," this could explain why 5S will be so limited initially.

LOL... Ya cause DEMAND pays the bills..All the Demand in the world don't sell a phone if its not there to sale you. So tired of this lame brain comment...Like Apple needs the buzz...please. Ya cause without that no one talks about Apple...lol

I'm a message board guru dont ever call my comments lame brain. Economics 101 my friend and possibly 101.2 if you have guru status

Yes, demand actually does pay the bills. Demand\hype * lame brain comment = ching ching..

Iphone will be trending when demand goes up. I bet my iphone 4 on it!

.

Trust me, I do. I was already using Macs back then when pretty much everyone else was proclaiming Apple dead...check back here when Wall Street finally sees the vast inventories of unsold 5Cs.

No offense, but if the 5C doesn't sell well enough, they'll cut orders. Tim Cook and Co. are too good to have inventory get too high. That said, the number of sales is anyone's guess at this point.

Yes it will, Apple's whole game plan is to bring Lower income consumers To buy Mid to high-end devices. 0-$99 down is enough for any consumer that can afford a cell phone contract to buy a iPhone.

If this is true it is not good news for Apple, when the iPhone 5 was launched I intended to get one, but couldn't get it when I wanted it. Then came the talk about the scratch problem, so I delayed and didn't get one in the end and stuck with my 4S. The chances are this could happen again, and I am sure there are other people who were put off by reviews of other buyers.
They have to get the timing right next time around, the iMac had a similar problem last time. And if some reports are to be believed then iOS7 is also not really ready for release, at least not for the iPad.
I love my Apple gadgets and computers, but I wish they would get their timing right and fix some serious problems. We do pay a premium price , and we have every right to expect to get a premium product.
So lets hope there is sufficient supply at a premium quality. Things are moving fast at the moment Apple have to get their act together.

I don't understand

I can't understand the urgency of having it on the first day. 99.9 percent of those complaining already have a working phone. Most of those are probably iPhones. Just order on line without ranting against apple. Given the sleep deprivation pervasive in the USA, your body might even thank you if you waited until the next morning to order.

Were we all raised with an inability to delay gratification or are we looking for a "cool boost" to our identity or ego?

What would you do if God forbid you needed a transplant?

The new case = major redesign, same case = minor redesign mindset is a big pet peeve of mine and probably others. I'm not in favor of calling people Samsung plants though.

The major redesign comes with the number variant and not with the -S variant

So the A7 chip, the M7 chip, the fingerprint scanner and technology to sequester that data on the hardware, the 64 bit processor, the improved GPU all don't qualify as a redesign?

Ok.

I think the 5s is so constrained because it's just the nature of Apple products. They have huge initial demand. Of course Apple knows this, and also knows that they only have the capacity to effectively make X-amount of phones by launch date.

The perk to this dynamic is that it creates a sense of urgency which is created by media buzz, which is the most effective marketing tool available. I don't think Apple deliberately withholds inventory and supply to create the buzz, but they certainly don't do anything to squash rumors that cause the initial sense of urgency to get their products. That would be foolish. So, does Apple create shortages to make more sells? I don't think so. I don't think it CAN meet demand without compromising the integrity of it's brand. The buzz of that is the perk, and they ride that buzz like no other company I've seen!

That's just my opinion.

I agree, if i have to wait a few more weeks so be it. Worst case maybe they get rid of any possible glitches.

NFC Is currently useless, Notice the HTC one mini Does not have an NFC(This may become a trend)

Not a trend, just crappy HTC engineering. They most likely couldn't fit the antenna in the mini into the aluminium body. The Galaxy S4 Mini has both NFC and BLE, the NFC antenna is inside the battery.

What are you talking about? Even though the case is largely the same (with the exception of the home button) _everything_ inside that case is completely new:

1. New A7 chip
2. New M7 chip
3. New Camera
4. New Flash
5. New Fingerprint Sensor

"Minor Variant" my ass.

I swear that most of the posters on this forum surely must be plants by Samsung and Microsoft....

Thank you for restoring some sensibility to the "chuckly" comment. Had they increased the screen size and kept the rest the same, it would be true innovation - on android blogs.

The way the 5C is priced, it IS a midrange device. On top of that it's at the high-end of that $300+ off contract reserved for midrange

It's not hitting the budget market by any stretch

How hard is it to make a phone that's a minor variant of the phone they were already making?

Advanced finger print sensor, 64 bit A7, M7 co-processor. There is some complicated new pieces to this "minor variant." In fact the only thing that is relatively the same is the casing and maybe the screen.

If you get the subsidy it hits the budget market if you have to buy unlocked off contract that's another story. You have 90% of the cell phone subscribers on contract it's doesn't make sense for Apple to come out with a lower price iPhone.

Yup. -S. not 6.

So by your logic, the name of the phone dictates whether or not the newer version is a major revision? In other words, if they would have called the exact same phone the iPhone 10, it would have been a major revision of several orders of magnitude.

Is that about right?
