if this thing was in such short supply, I wonder why apple still is launching in all the countries still, and why did they even bother with china?

As it turns out I am involved with all of those things. : ) I'm an electrcal engineer and my team designs products which happen to be manufactured by Foxconn on the same campus that does iPhone production.

Doubling or Quadrupling might be hyperbole, but it sounds like what Apple is seeing is a dip in production, not a struggle to geometrically increase capacity. Chip fabs do cost billions, but there is no global shortage of capacity. They're expensive but relatively easy to scale.

I'm just saying this temporary shortage is likely due a particular bottleneck in the supply chain, not some global production constraint. Look for the things that are new and haven't been built in 10's of millions quantities before. Ramping up that type of production is a challenge.

A significantly more fair and accurate statement than your original, I appreciate you clarifying.

The combo of A7, M7 and finger scanner is what's holding this sucker back, no question. I think it will be 2014 before supply meets demand, easily.

Remember -- it's highly likely Samsung is no longer making the CPUs for Apple Switching to an entirely new supplier is probably a VERY big contributor as well. It may have been "optional" for Apple to switch manufacturers at this point, but something tells me they sped up the process, for strategic reasons, and were willing to accept lower yield initially in exchange.

the reason only 10% get the 64Gb iPhone is because of price, they need to readjust standard size to 32, 64, 128... Dang apps keep getting bigger and bigger, expect many to reach 1GB-2GB now w/ 64 bit cooked into them...

I don't get wet in the toilet. Maybe if I use a bidet, but is just a specific part that gets wet that AFAIK no one uses for daily phone use.

What they need to do is stop milking these 100 dollar storage upgrade costs. I suppose it was okay back in 2007 but now chips have become cheaper.

What are you talking about? Even though the case is largely the same (with the exception of the home button) _everything_ inside that case is completely new:

1. New A7 chip
2. New M7 chip
3. New Camera
4. New Flash
5. New Fingerprint Sensor

"Minor Variant" my ass.

I swear that most of the posters on this forum surely must be plants by Samsung and Microsoft....

...says the person with the most likes.

Reminds me of the 90s-era incapacity to deliver the PowerBooks that people most wanted - so it is a double failure: OVER-DELIVER on crap (5C) and UNDER-DELIVER on the better model (5S)...terrible approach.

the C is not crap.

in fact i bet the C will be very popular with most people, which is why they focused on it. the C will be for high-end users.

im pretty sure apple has more experience, not to mention rock-star-level success, launching hit products year after year than you.

Lovin' all the hilarious sarcastic responses in this thread. Slightly concerned at the number of folks who don't recognize them as such ;)

Personally, I don't mind waiting but I gotta have the gold one for the faster WiFi speeds.

Exactly. The only minor variant is the case itself. Everything else is a major upgrade… These people are clearly Samsung and Microsoft groupies, which means they're people who are concerned more about appearances than function.

Why would they do that? It's the most profitable part in the phone and people buy it so why would they change anything? Apple is there to make money not save the consumer money.

Not trying to be negative just being realistic.

Is this just meant so they can sell out quickly? Come on, beef up production.

Economics-wise? No, I'm sure they've calculated those prices carefully to maximize profit. Annoying to the consumers who want extra storage, but not everything goes our way.

That Apple can't figure out how to set up good supply chain before releasing an item.

Are they really "unaware" of unprecedented demand for their new products? Do they really need to do the marketing trickery to make it seem like a product is more popular by having it artificially unavailable during the first few months after release?

Apple knows darn well that millions will be scrambling to buy their product on release, so why would they even bother setting up a release date before they have the stock numbers available?

whats amazing is how little you know about supply chain management. these things dont come out of thin air. you can imagine apple's been prepping for months building them -- despite that the last one came out only a year ago. the demand will be huge because its a popular item people find valuable...but you can only build at a certain rate. more people will want them than they can make...which means either A) delaying, or B) selling what you have and making more.

i dont know if youve ever run your own business, but at no point are you going to pass on making money. profit is the air your company breathes. so you sell what you have, and continue to make more.

and the world turns.

Don't forget the different colors. They don't simply paint on the colors.

But lots of Apple fans also care about appearance more than function. What I don't get is why some iPhone users (many I know) complain about the 5 being too similar to the 4S, but they bought the 4S as an upgrade from the 4.

My wife is at a hospital right now, about to give birth to our first child.

I feel so bad that I can't be with her right now as I've joined the line at the Apple store Fifth Avenue. So stoked!

I hope you're being entirely unserious.

And if you are being serious, I hope you are not entirely surprised when your wife divorces you. At least you'll be able to keep the iPhone in the settlement.

"Here, buy the 5C instead. Look at all the colors!"

i actually prefer the body style of the C. i like the green, and i preferred the smooth, soft shape of the pre-4 models.

i think for most people it will be fine.

Im sorry... What was the name of the Cell Phone YOU designed? Like the S4 is not a Variant of the S3 or the Note 3 of the Note 2 or the maxx to the razor ETC ETC... And as far as Innovation goes... Wheres your phone with a Fingerprint Reader? or a First of its kind Dual color flash. Wheres your Motion Chip? Didn't think so... But all you haters think if the new iPhone doesn't play with the twins its not innovative. Meanwhile show me something Samsung Innovated lately on there own... Bueller.... Bueller....Bueller

1080p screen, IR emitter, actual multitasking, eye movement recognition, air gestures, super-imposable images using both cameras, dual video call, S translator, Optical reader, smart pause, smart scroll, etc etc.

Yeah, Samsung's SIV is superior in pretty much every way other than a fingerprint sensor which does barely anything for me. I finally gave up my iPhone for the first time since '08 because of this most recent launch. Now if they could just make trackpads like the MBP.

How hard is it to make a phone that's a minor variant of the phone they were already making?

Minor variant? Slapping on a big screen and a bunch if gimmicks that will hardly get used, thats a minor variant. A real fingerprint sensor that actually works and is integrated into the security of the phone is innovative. Putting a 64 bit CPU into a phone and rebuilding your OS to be 64 bit is amazing. Nothing really minor on Apple's end.

NFC will not be the future, is just a stepping stone for something better and the reason why apple as not included it into their products.

NFC is catching on at a seemingly exponential rate here in the UK for shop payments; in London and from my experience, at least.

As for sending playlists by "touching phones" – I see your point. I've never used my S3's NFC capabilities other than to test it once by sending a photo. It did work well, in fairness!

Edit: As for the topic – damn! I was hoping to sneak a new 5S into my life this Friday. A year of Samsung was enough. Not a particularly bad experience, but not a better one; and to put it plainly, an iPhone works better with my Macs/iPads/iPhones at home.

I do want the Space Grey (I think), but it still doesn't sound hopeful. Might have to be an order-online-and-wait purchase this one.

What's more amazing is how little you know if supply chain management. If you believe Apple decided that this was the 5S this year, then you must be insane. Steve Jobs himself said that when the 4 was released, the 6 was in development. They could have been making 5's when the 4S was being announced. Please don't tell other people how little they know, when clearly you know less than they do.
