You're right. Apple knew all along, after pouring over the historical data points that there would not be enough iPhone 5S's for launch day.

I wonder why they didn't mention that during the Keynote address, since they obviously knew it then...

What company pre announces that supplies will be constrained?

Typical apple. Releasing a product it can't supply enough of on top of their premature iOS 7 launch.

Trust me, I do. I was already using Macs back then when pretty much everyone else was proclaiming Apple dead...check back here when Wall Street finally sees the vast inventories of unsold 5Cs.

The iphone 5c is going to be one of the biggest successes in history. Wait and see...

Actually, Chuckles is mostly right.

The manufacturing and assembly of most of this phone should be about the same. Yields should be very good.

The only thing that is killing supplies is probably the A7 yields and maybe the fingerprint sensor.

M7, flash and camera modules won't be causing supply problems.

What are you talking about? Even though the case is largely the same (with the exception of the home button) _everything_ inside that case is completely new:

1. New A7 chip
2. New M7 chip
3. New Camera
4. New Flash
5. New Fingerprint Sensor

"Minor Variant" my ass.

I swear that most of the posters on this forum surely must be plants by Samsung and Microsoft....

Its not anything to do with price. Its demand. The proof is already there. Right now only about 10% of iPhones sold are the 64GB version. That would be even less people for the 128GB. I think thats the main reason they dont do the 128GB. 98% People don't need or want 128GB in a phones. Add to that with the influx of free online storage and cloud services. I think this is a main reason you are not seeing many new phones that even have a 64GB option... Dropbox, Box, Skydrive, Google Drive...Etc Also Add to that the new Airdrop feature with IOS7 hopefully making it easier to transfer files from laptop to phone or iPad to phone etc...

I dont see a big demand for a 128 gb phone. With more and more reliance on the cloud (itunes match, dropbox etc), I dont see many users needing so much space

not surprising. considering apple didn't let people pre-order the iphone 5s and apple has been focusing on the 5c, it's obvious the 5s constraints are low. I wonder if that's their strategy. Kind of like macbook air is to apple, the 5c will be the cheaper product that it uses to compete with android. the 5S and future 6 will now be the "expensive" phone

with more and more carriers placing limits on how much you can download, the cloud is not the best place to keep itunes.
Matter of fact, I just passed up a 4g iPad from my work because it would kick my plan off of unlimited data and I would only get 2gb data per month.

Trust me, I do. I was already using Macs back then when pretty much everyone else was proclaiming Apple dead...check back here when Wall Street finally sees the vast inventories of unsold 5Cs.

And I was using Apple computers (this is what they were called before the Macintosh came out, FYI) in, hmm, something like 1983? So what.

The 5C is going to sell extremely well. Ludicrously. It's going to be the iPod mini of the iPhone line -- another product that everyone debunked, before it went on to crush every iPod sales metric ever.

Who will be buying up iPhone 5Cs in the literal millions?

• The huge number of people who are still using feature phones and will be able to get the 5C for free or nearly free w/ subsidy. It will probably be my Mom's first smartphone. She will love it. She doesn't need a 5S.

• China, India, Russia, Brazil-- it's going to be selling in droves, but hey, we shall see, right?

Its demand.
Not true. price is a big component of the demand. always was with any product. of course there is little demand for 64GB models right now but a big part of the reason why is that the prices are so ridiculously high. This is especially relevant for subsidized phones (which covers vast majority of iphones in US) where you pay twice as much for 64GB compared to 16GB. no wonder most people choose 16GB. My point is that Apple (unlike other manufacturers) can easily afford to make increments they charge for extra storage to be much less than 100$ and still maintain 40%+ profit margins. I'm certain if it was 50$ instead of 100$ to go from 16GB to 32GB and from 32GB to 64GB we would see a very different spread in popularity of various storage options. then they could add an extra option of 128GB without the overall price going through the roof.

I'm expecting to show up at my local mall's Apple store around 8am and be one of the first 50-75 people there. I'm completely serious. We'll see what happens.

i agree with him, 128gb won't be in high demand. NAND chip prices haven't come down substantially for Apple to buy into it as well. Remember, it might be ridic that apple charges $100 per upgrade, but that doesn't mean going from 64gb to 128gb on one NAND is a cheap upgrade

I wish you luck! I just called my local Apple store to find out when the mall is opening on Friday morning, and they told me 6am. I plan to arrive around 4-5am. I still plan to wait for quite some time after 8am. I have a 1pm meeting that I can't miss, so we'll see how it goes!

If a $128 was available for $499 subsidized, I would certainly consider it. As it is, I'll be getting a 64GB 5S. So yes, some people do want it, I agree.

64 for me too. Just like my 4S. I just can't understand why there is no option this time around? They were first with the 64bit ARM processor, seems only fitting to be the first with 128gb on-board.

I don't see the appeal much in an iPad because I take a lot of pictures and videos with my phone. As the iPad and iPhone become more powerful, they need more storage as they can be great for editing and even rendering in a few years.

I pray there is more than 1gb of RAM but I have serious doubts because Apple sucks in this area. Let the defenders come in and rail me but you'll be praising 2gb next fall

There is no mostly right. It only takes one component to delay the production of an entire phone. His failure to acknowledge the probable existence of such components makes him entirely wrong.

i'm goign to guess that it'll have 1.5gb or 2 because ios7 is so graphic heavy. just a guess

Gold is so rare for the iPhone 5S. It will be very tough to find one in retail stores. If you want one; go to Ebay and expect to pay at least 5X that of retail price! It is going to be a nightmare to get! Better off getting the Ebay 14 carat goldplated 5 for $1,500 in 16GB or the 64GB for $2,500!

My wife is at a hospital right now, about to give birth to our first child.

I feel so bad that I can't be with her right now as I've joined the line at the Apple store Fifth Avenue. So stoked!

Your child will favor the milkman and like Android. I laugh at you :p

And for the seventh time now -- no, this is not true, they want to be able to have supply match demand. They can't just snap fingers and make factories appear. There are only a handful of chip fabs on the planet that can make many of the key components, they literally cost billions of dollars and years to set up, per fab. If Apple could have an iPhone ready to go for everyone who wanted one on launch day, they absolutely would do that. Apple does not need gimmicks to build hype, they are the kings of hype already. Deal with it, you have no understanding of basic business.

They have more cash on hand than the US government.

They have been making this phone for 7 years and have had this issue and known it was going to happen again through past experiences.

They are a company that, if the world doesn't offer what then need to make something, then they will go our of their way to create it.

Which means that this issue, is a choice, not a circumstance, because Apple, aren't victims to circumstance.
