I'm tired of this same scenario every launch! Why don't they just wait until they have enough supply? Well we know why don't we?! VERY FRUSTRATING!!!

Yes, we do. That would be really, really terrible logistics and cash flow management.

Glad I'm sitting the 5s out. Hopefully they can get any production issues squared away for the 6. I am looking forward to getting iOS 7 tomorrow, though. Good luck to those of you trying to get the 5s on Friday!

redesigned body (inside shape, screw holes, etc)
redesigned logic board
redesigned CPU
redesigned camera
redesigned radio
new coprocessor
new fingerprint scanner

Yes, minor variations.

3GS to 4: major redesign, retina, iconic
4S to 5: major redesign, LTE
5 to 5S: fingerprint scanner

How hard is it to make a phone that's a minor variant of the phone they were already making?

It's not that difficult. That's why the 5c is in great supply. The 5s is not a minor variant of the 5, it only looks like one. The A7, M7, fingerprint reader, and rear camera are all new. Plenty of new components to introduce supply constraints.

Hmm, so if I want a 64GB Space Grey iPhone 5S, wake up at 3am for online or chance it that I can bet to an Apple Store in NJ burbs by 8am.

Here we go.. Another made up Apple PR story as per normal.. Let's see the goons standing in a queue for hours to get an out dated phone.

People would be pissed if they took longer to release it just as they're pissed when it's hard to find at launch. I think either way, it'd be hard to find at launch. There's always a month long wait after the first day or two with these things. So even if they delayed a month to satisfy that demand, there'd be no way to ship that many phones that fast to stores and customers homes. And all that would happen is that the people who would get it a month later due to pre-ordering it get it a month later with everyone else, and then there's still likely going to be a backup. And of course, people pissing and moaning about how long it takes them to release phones.

Silliness.

Reminds me of the 90s-era incapacity to deliver the PowerBooks that people most wanted - so it is a double failure: OVER-DELIVER on crap (5C) and UNDER-DELIVER on the better model (5S)...terrible approach.

It's actually more like this: OVER-DELIVER on higher margins (5c) and UNDER-DELIVER on lower margins (5s)

Smart move by Apple in my opinion.

God I hope this is a joke. ...can I add /s please??

If it's not, pay someone to stay in your spot at least! It's not worth missing the birth of your first child man.

Someone reddit this **** and see if we can find the real guy to make sure he's just joking!!!

He's obviously joking

Seems like it happens every time. More like a marketing formula rather than true demand and supply. Am I wrong here?

Seems intentional

Starting to think this is done intentionally by Apple to create more demand. People "really" want what they can't get... So people that didn't even care to upgrade but decided to check will actually want to upgrade when they find out they can't get it. Human nature. Want what they can't have.

Your life must be very fulfilling.

Life is all about the little things -- like being a smug prick and telling people "Yes, this is the new one. I love it" or "I bought it yesterday, it's awesome."

And yes, it's tremendously fulfilling.

64-gig black/grey is what I'm after. Wonder if I'll be able to get my hands on one at 3:00. Part of me also wonders if they somewhat trump this kind of stuff up just to get people amp'd about possibly getting (or not getting) something. You'd think by now they'd have this supply and demand thing figured out pretty well. Did I read or see that China will actually get launch-day phones too? Could this have to do with short-supply?

so many questions. Guess we'll see if I get one on Friday!!

Last year my sister was a dancer, but she got cancer. The doctor said she still had two months more. I thought she had time, so I got in line for the new iPhone at the Apple Store...She laid there dying with my father and mother, her very last words were, "Where is my brother?".

Thank God I don't have a sister to worry about this year..

SO STOKED

After this news I think I'm just going to order it online. Does anyone have any idea, based on previous launches, what the typical shipping time should be if I get my order through in the first few minutes?

That's what I want to know as well. Anyone?

It seems that every launch has some sort of constraint in supply. It's probably true, but exaggerated. It certainly doesn't hurt creating a buzz to incite a greater rush on launch day. The moment you tell a human they are in danger of not having something they want, it becomes a crisis and almost a matter of survival to obtain it.

and yes... I'm waiting in line to get one.

Why does this happen EVERY year? Apple, why the hell can't you figure this supply chain thing out and start a month of two earlier than normal - or add a few production facilities/expand teams or something?

Every time a new iPhone comes out it's a total pain in the butt for weeks on end for people. (And I typically pre-order - but that obviously wasn't available this time)

It's frustrating.

Building a factory is not cheap, not to say a lot of them, one for each special parts. And, it's really not socially responsible to leave these factories unused for 10 months out of each year!!
