How hard is it to make a phone that's a minor variant of the phone they were already making?

It's mostly the new parts. The second largest factor of the shortage is the sudden surge of the demand. So, just ease down a little, order it and wait, you will get yours no later than when this sudden surge passes by.

IMO, this is all an artificial scarcity for a publicity stunt in hope for a stock bounce. First, no pre-orders for the 5S. Now a report of "scarcity" with no hard data.

Apple could easily have a public web page showing the supply of iPhone stock at all stores in almost real time to the public. Many companies on line do this for warehouse components to assure delivery times.

This all tells me they want to show crowds of people around Apple stores like the first iPhone launch to impress Wall Street.

Of course that's what they're doing. If they can create demand, why wouldn't they? I doubt their shareholders are complaining.

I almost want to take the day off of work and buy a few to sell to some of the people here who are COMPELLED to have one at launch lol

I already planned to wait a month or two. After all, if I wait, I can have a fun new phone experience with iOS 7 on my 4S first, and then after that wears off, get a 5S ! A 2 for 1 ! :D

And people want a 128gb iPhone. Not going to happen.

I think price has a lot to do with it; if they make the base at 32GB, then 32 and 64 will be best sellers. Apple marks up higher storage so much to the point where people say "I can manage my music collection to save $200"

oh no! I suspect Apple server will be hammered when it comes around midnight and you won't be able to place the order.

redesigned body (inside shape, screw holes, etc)
redesigned logic board
redesigned CPU
redesigned camera
redesigned radio
new coprocessor
new fingerprint scanner

Yes, minor variations.

i wonder why, what "something" gate are we going to have just after launch ? antenna? battery ? chipping paint ? home buttons falling off ?

SO glad im on a contract that has me refreshed Mid whole iPhone cycle, ill be enjoying my iPhone 6, 6 months after launch, when the bugs are all ironed out of manufacturing

My wife is at a hospital right now, about to give birth to our first child.

I feel so bad that I can't be with her right now as I've joined the line at the Apple store Fifth Avenue. So stoked!

You got me rolling in the aisles with that one....

Can you get me one too?

Funny are the replies that show frustration over not having a new phone on launch day. An arbitrary day. Are people that "competitive" that they need to be first? It's a phone.

Apple could have said the launch date was a month from now and then you could have it on day one. So you would be waiting the same amount of time. So clearly it must be that others have the phone before you? Wow.

Literally the only reason I enjoy buying new stuff is being a prick to people who don't have it yet.

Some of us would just like it if they would increase the base storage sizes every five years or so. Pictures and apps are bigger now.
It'd be nice if they'd up the base to 32GB, but honestly, all my issues with 16GB would disappear if they'd just let me shoot video at less than 1080p, or provide some simple means to reduce video quality afterwards, or even when syncing (original to computer, highly compressed version back to phone). The freakin' iPhone can't even display 1080p anyway, not on its own screen!!

I'm tired of this same scenario every launch! Why don't they just wait until they have enough supply? Well we know why don't we?! VERY FRUSTRATING!!!

If I order a phone with a 2yr contract and I'm switching carriers, can I control when it ports over my number and start the new contract? The problem is my current 2yr contract with AT&T is over at the beginning of Oct. However, they told me that if I port and end the contract before the end of contract, they will charge me $75, even if it is 1 day before the end of the contract.

If I order the phone at launch for verizon, and get it a few days later, can I wait till after my contract is over to port, or does it start ticking immediately?

Unless they've done work since the beta I played with, iOS 7 on a 4S is just a generally miserable and slow experience.

I'm not planning on upgrading until I buy a new phone.
