Well that's rather annoying. A 3 week wait for a device that I ordered 2 minutes after it became available.

Here in Sydney Australia, I queued at a suburban Telstra store, arriving half an hour before opening time. I was number 7 in the queue.

I entered the store as soon as it opened at 8 am, and I walked out with my new 5s, 32GB, space grey by 8:35 am. It was very pleasant and efficient; they even brought coffees for everyone, handed out free Telstra baseball caps and keyrings, etc.

Before everyone went inside (while they were still lined up outside) they compiled a list of the phones that people were wanting. I saw the list when they were taking the orders for coffee, and every person there was getting a 5s (my guess is that 5c aspirants had already ordered online), 32GB was by far the most popular size, and every single person was getting a space grey model.

Yes, but they didn't slip down to 7-10 days.

It started on that timeframe. Myself and others were constantly refreshing until it went live. It's not like they had the stock and then suddenly ran out -- they just didn't have the stock in the first place.

So basically, what we are doing is pre-ordering on launch day!

App Store

As with other launch dates, the App store (UK) seemed to come back up first. Mine actually came back up at 23:58 and had mine ordered througb express checkout in seconds.

It seems to me like there are two possibilities. One that Apple have sent all the 5s' to the physical apple stores and that's the only place you'll be able to get them straight away. Or two they really don't have any stock. I'm guessing its option one.

They were like that straight away.

I can't be certain, but I think it was 7-10 days as soon as it went live. As everyone else is saying i think this is because the items are going to come from China. My MacBook Air was excatly the same.

Annoying because it means we won't get them on launch day, but screw waiting outside a store over night. It's only a phone I can wait (I think) :)

My iPhone arrives today!

Well, no waiting for me.... :D

TNT couriers is bringing me my brand new, (discounted $$$)
white iPhone 4S, today! (pre-installed with ios7)

Should be a nice upgrade from my 3G.

This is Apples way of getting everyone hyped up about a product using limited availability to their advantage to make it worth more. Scalpers rejoyce at this news...

This probably sounds feasable, I suspect you might be right - the chance to upsell accessories.

Exactly. Hate to say it but Apple have really ******** up this time. They've only got two phone models, FFS. I genuinely think the secrecy around the 5s has meant they thought they could manufacturer all of them within the last few days -- blag it, if you would -- and that just hasn't happened.

There haven't been supply issues this extreme since before the 3GS. Very disappointing.

The 7-10 days is dispatch time. It makes no difference where they are being dispatched from.

All new releases are shipped from China. The difference with this release is that the orders are being opened on release date.

A theory

When I ordered my iPhone 5, there were people that ordered on the first day and were already sending back scratched iPhones with express exchange.

That meant that people already received 2 phones while others were still waiting.

I think it's a good idea to delay all orders, because Apple has 3 weeks to deliver shipments before all the stupid complaints come in.

More people will get their phones within 3 weeks.
Think about it.

It seems normal delivery is 3 weeks no matter if you order at 12:01 or 03:01 wherever you are located. If this is also the case here in the USA, Apple gets a big F on this roll out...

Yep, this was disappointing for me. I had the page there, and I was constantly refreshing. It came back up at 12:05 (or thereabouts), and immediately it was 7-10 days (as mentioned in the article).

I was hoping my patience would pay off, and I'd get a nice 5s the next working day. How wrong I was. Now I'm bleary-eyed for no reason, and I've got work tomorrow morning. After all that build-up, all that hype, all that coffee to keep me awake ... :(

Midnight isn't that late on a Thursday night. Those of us in the Eastern half of the US need to stay up until or get up at 2:00 or 3:00AM.

So how does Apple count sales? Is it when someone's credit card is charged? And for online orders is the card not charged until the device ships? If so then sales numbers this weekend might be really low.

My local att store told me 15 mins ago that they have a plentiful supply of space grey 64gb models...

oh no, the horror of having to wait a whole week for a new phone. Whatsoever shall we do... ITS THE APOCALYPSE!

seriously, they make it seem like this is some kind of disaster.. it's 7-10 days get a grip folks.
Plus i would rather wait a month or so for them to iron out the kinks like with every new phone release
