NFC is so old and hardly used any where. I'm an apple fan, but they seem to be the last one to show up with technology that's been out for a long time. Give me a 4.5 or 4.8 screen and I'll be a happy camper. You can keep NFC and the stupid fingerprint reader. GEEZ!!!!!

Once again, "I don't want it so nobody else should want it". Need to think beyond your needs and borders. NFC is used extensively in Europe.

Also, if Apple can give an elegant solution for NFC, it will become more popular.

in the United States Walt Disney is the only company deploying NFC. We have no where to use it other than their theme parks. So if we got it what would we use it for?

Um, I think the iPhone is also sold in Europe and other countries where NFC is widely used.

If you can't tell, that's sarcasm.

What exactly is NFC being used for in the Android devices it's it? I mean, besides nothing.

I use it to change profile on my phone. Two tags at the entrance of my house. One touch with my phone, silent mode is off, wifi on, GPS off and bluetooth on. The other one does the contrary for when I leave to go to work. Another tag near my bed, this turns of all sounds on my phone so I can sleep soundly.

To make a purchase, whip out your 5S phone and run your thumb along the fingerprint sensor embedded in the Home button. Done.

Or, don't whip out your phone and press your thumb onto the face of your iWatch. Done.

Finger Print scanning and NFC go hand in hand so I could see this, but my guess is not until the iphone 6

I can automate my house, from lighting to the tvs, etc. It can sense I'm in my car and sets everything up for driving use. It does this when I go to work or go to sleep also.

There are tons of possibilities.
NFC is very low power and has to be within an inch to work. Bluetooth and wifi are the protocols that allow for what you are describing. Wrong Tech.

I do not want to have so much info in my phone, is like having all the eggs in one basket that brakes and is an easy target. Besides it is software and is hackable.
Thus the fingerprint reader. They need to steal your phone AND your thumbprint!

Haven't heard of Apple's Keychain being hacked yet, so not worried.

Walk up to my car with my phone in my pocket, and be able to open the door and push a button to start it up, with no need to do anything else. Have the car nav system fire up to show traffic on my way home, because my phone knows my schedule and where I'm likely to want to go to.

And lots more stuff that I cannot currently invent and am not currently thinking of.

Sheesh.
If your car supports keyless access, it is linked by the car's security system to a key that can only be programmed by the dealer.(That is a good thing) The new Acura RLX has the tech you are talking about and it is linked to an App on the iPhone that can open the door transfer data back an forth to the navi etc...
It communicates via wifi and bluetooth.

Basically, I want them to copy Meego Harmattan and webOS. Mostly the former.

1. Improved multitasking. The current implementation is clunky. I want decent mini views of everything running like Expose/Mission Control and the option to close all at once. If i have multiple windows of the same app stick them together like a deck of cards. webOS and Meego have the best multitasking implementations to date. Apple should copy that.

2. The app-centric UI is ancient. Everyone searches for what they want to launch now and most would rather just take a quick glance at the basics (social, calendar, and messaging), which means scrolling through pages upon pages of apps on the home screen to get anything done is archaic. Throw them in a folder or separate screen and clear the main homescreen/desktop for more important stuff.

3. Live feeds/home screen. Let me know at a quick glance whats happening with my calendar, twitter, facebook, messaging etc without having to launch each app accordingly. Another nod to the way Meego/N9 does this.

4. Quick access to settings. They already copied Android's notification concept might as well finish the job and add quick toggles for Wi-Fi, BT, Airplane, Brightness etc. or copy webOS's implementation by putting a little gear in the top right that drops down and reveals them.

Right now doing something in iOS takes 3-5 taps instead of 1-2 and it gets tiresome and boring fast.

Why can't we have something like this

Feeds/Notifications, Apps, Multitasking. Done. Simple, quick and functional

Instead of this chaos

Nope, not true. I prefer the latter so that means THAT is what everyone wants.

It can do much more than that, for exmaple, initialize a file transfer, web page sharing by just touching two phone.
I am not understanding why you complain if apple add a new function, you don't use it doesn't means others don't need it.

Never quite understood the purpose of NFC. Pulling my wallet out of my pocket and taking a card out isn't an arduous task I'm longing to rid myself of.

The fingerprint sensor's a nice idea (if it can replace typing in lock screen passwords it'd be fantastic) but Apple's never done this before, not even in their laptops.

Because the iPhone supports Geo fencing that I use often for reminders, you will see this capability without NFC or the need to install tags around your house. How many regular consumers do you think are doing what you do?

Yippee!!!!!

No decent sized screen, improved casing or wireless charging, modern OS or a host of other goodies to compete with what Samsung have undoubtedly got waiting in the wings. Nope, we get old hat NFC and a finger print reader ... brilliant!

If this is the best Apple can come up with then they deserve to lose their stock value overnight!

Lame ... totally lame!

If you're talking about chaos, I think you switched the image order.

Yaeh, I thought that, too. But I do like the "Live tiles" thing.

Would like to be able to set up a "home screen" with live tiles of certain items. Then, when I need, be able to go on to the apps screens.

Apple, i don't care if you re-release the iPhone 5 in its exact current state since its still one of the best smartphones money can buy even in 2013.

Just for the love of all things sacred do something about iOS. It needs a very significant update.

... yes, 'One of the best' ... but not THE best (or close to it in my honest opinion)

NFC is very low power and has to be within an inch to work. Bluetooth and wifi are the protocols that allow for what you are describing. Wrong Tech.

You tap your phone on an NFC tag that you have programmed. So for instance, you have a tag on your nightstand. You tap the phone on it and set it down. Your alarm is set, wifi and bluetooth are turned off, your phone is backed up, and potentially, lights are turned off. With Bluetooth or Wifi, you would probably need to unlock the phone and push some buttons to kick off the events because you wouldn't necessarily want all of that to happen within bluetooth range of some receiver. I'm a little surprised. Last year so many seemed disappointed in the lack of NFC in the iPhone 5, now this year many are dismissing it.

Some facts about NFC:

- It is widely used in Japan and China, many E.U. countries and other parts of the world. Just because the U.S. may be behind in the deployment of NFC systems, doesn't mean no one uses it.

- Visa and MC went on record last year before the iPhone 5 launch that they were working with a major mobile phone company in launching NFC devices. From an article a year ago on MacRumors:

More Hints that Apple is Working on an NFC Payment System on the Next iPhone

Elsewhere:

Report: Apple Working With Visa and Mastercard on NFC Payments for iPhone 5

Many insiders suggested that Apple's lack of an NFC iPhone 5 wasn't due to room or the inability to accommodate the proper sensors (as Apple had NFC iPhone 5 prototypes before launching the non-NFC model), but rather Apple's insistence on a percentage of all iOS NFC transactions that the credit companies would not agree on.

- Security: Many do not realize their credit and debit cards already have chips for pay pass systems. Studies have shown it is easy for someone to purchase a reader online for $100, tuck it away in a small wallet, and wave it near peoples' pockets/purses, thereby getting their accounts. Using a simple hotel keycard, they programmed the accounts into the keycards, used them in stores and NO ONE checked. In fact, Dateline did an exact segment on this fact. Having a fingerprint system to verify a transaction before it can be charged is safer, but further the range on NFC is much smaller and securer than the "Blink" or pay pass chips in credit cards that have been used for years.

- Digital wallet: Why carry a wallet or purse that can be stolen with no security on your cards? Yes, your iPhone can be stolen, but with the right security (i.e. fingerprint scanning) it can be much harder to implement.

- Non-purchase use: Infiniti has been exploring NFC tech in its soon to be released Q models (the "Q" line will replace all the models, from the G to the M, with the number indicating the model line). Using NFC in a mobile device, when the driver enters the vehicle all their settings are instantly used by reading the device. Other NFC equipped devices would not be in the vicinity thus would not interfere with the drivers' settings, allowing seating, mirrors, radio, temp, even app settings for Pandora and Facebook to be used in the vehicle.

There are many methods and uses for NFC technology. Just because it isn't implemented in the U.S. or hasn't been utilized to its full extent doesn't mean it's "dead on arrival". Apple has a reasonably strong history of taking their time with available tech and making it work well.

Personally, I don't see the 5S implementing such technology simply on the minor changes in XS models in the past. The iPhone 6, if this is Apple's direction, absolutely.

One thing I worry about here is ... do you give the officer your phone for him to take back to the patrol car to check it out? If so, can they use a device to literally grab everything off your phone? I recall reading about such devices being available to law enforcement. If there's even the possibility, I'd rather give them my current non-electronic driver's license.

They're gonna do that if they feel they have need to, regardless of whether there's a digital drivers' license on it or not.

Can the fingerprint reader be a) replacing/substituting for the PIN or password for iTunes? ...or b) sign of a multi-user OS? Both have been asked-for for a long time...

You just described Android JellyBean

We need some real innovation! Faster chip, slightly better camera, and better battery are becoming old and boring upgrades with iPhone. I would not feel safe with NFC and the fingerprint stuff is not worth $250+ with tax even if I qualify for an upgrade. We surely miss the innovation days of Steve.
