LOL okay...but I just don't like the idea of my fingerprints on ANY computer database...I have never been to jail and don't plan on it.

The data might be "fireproof" from hackers, but Apple still has the stuff on their end and can turn it over to the government if they request it.

Name...and fingerprint on that person's named device

I don't like this at all.

In other words, if Apple and government agencies work together behind the scenes, they could be compiling a billion fingerprints from people across the world to use for ID systems analysis and such. This worries me much. Even more is social profiling, etc.

I really don't see the point of a finger print sensor, I mean sure its a nice feature for some security features.. but most people care about a larger screen then a finger print sensor of all things. You would think Apple would listen.

buttons

No one seems to be considering the possibility that the "home button" won't be a button (clicky-clicky button, I mean) but will instead be a touch-sensitive sensor that doubles as a fingerprint sensor.

I hope it's not touch-sensitive. I prefer the 'click' feeling satisfaction :)

I was also wondering if they accidentally switched the wording w/ convex and concave

I agree there. Like I said, there are many other things Apple could work on with the iPhone...like getting month-long standby time, better battery life, larger screen, and better WiFi range. Heck, even the design...the sharp edges...it's an uncomfortable phone!!! I wish Apple would smooth things out some and give the phone rounded edges so it's comfortable to talk for any length of time.

Have a listen to the "Stuff You Should Know" podcast that just came out on fingerprinting. So often we assume fingerprints are incontrovertible, when that is anything but the case. Definitely compelling.

KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who has on a number of occasions offered accurate information on Apple's product plans, has issued a new research note indicating that the iPhone 5S may include a sapphire-covered convex home button housing a fingerprint sensor.

The iPhone's home button has had a concave shape since its introduction in 2007, but Kuo believes that moving to a convex shape would give Apple more space in which to fit the fingerprint sensor expected to be a differentiating feature for the iPhone 5S. Kuo goes on to note that Apple may have some advantages over its competitors as fingerprint sensors make their way into mobile devices, as Apple will utilize RF and capacitive technology from AuthenTec rather than the common optical recognition used in many other sensors, making for a more robust system unaffected by dust and other contaminants. The iPhone's iconic single home button also provides a natural location for a fingerprint sensor.

Your finger is much more likely to 'slide off' a convex button/sensor, than a concave one, where your finger 'nests' itself for that brief moment, when you're using that Home button. And when that sensor is trying to authenticate your fingerprint, that may not be a desirable thing. A concave button or sensor, rather than a convex one, is the ideal form factor for that Home button.

Whatever Apple ultimately does with that Home button, for heavens sake, make it last longer! :(

Won't reading the print take a few seconds anyway (not to mention the misreads?) I want to get on my phone in no time!

It def takes me more than a few seconds to type in my long-ass secure password, so I'd love to be able to just lay my finger on a button. However, I'm sure you'll be able to enter passwords/passcodes manually too.

Only a month to go before the announcement and we haven't seen any leaked scanner pictures. Either this is the best kept secret yet or there is no scanner.

I guess they tripled-down on security. :) Third times the charm?

Why do people want a bigger screen? The best thing about the iPhone is its form factor if they're going to make it huge like the other phones I might as well get an Android.

To each his own really, but there's absolutely no reason preventing Apple from increasing the screen size while keeping the form factor pretty close to what it is now.

I personally would love an iPhone with a 4.7 inch screen.

For anyone thinking a fingerprint scanner or NFS don't matter, I think you're failing to realize the potential:

Every single security feature you use today, passwords, keys, PINs, signatures, pass phrases... All of that could be done away with and replaced with just touching your iPhone.

It automatically verifies your fingerprint and emits a signal to all devices within a foot or two that you're you, and they unlock.

No longer will you need keys, or to remember anything special, or comment on how lousy your signature is... You'll just need your iPhone on you. It's a lot more convenient.

Furthermore, it's a lot more secure. Anyone can steal your key by getting a picture of it. A hacker can write a script that guesses your password day and night and it'll likely find yours within a week, if not within an hour.

I'm currently hoping to hold out for the iPhone 6 because I don't expect Apple to add both NFS and a fingerprint scanner in the 5S, but if they do, I'm getting it in a heartbeat just so I don't have to deal with passwords or locks anymore.

Imagine never having to type in a password again and just touching a button for a couple seconds instead.

It's been discussed in previous threads, apple may just go with a sensor under a glass. Convex button? Not likely

You might not have been paying attention when Cookie said the time wasn't right for large displays on smartphones. So far, large displays haven't met Apple's standards of perfection. Cookie believes they'll be ready in the next couple of years. :p

Then why do you think this leak just came out. I think Kuo would know, seeing as he's an inside man, and the phone comes out in less than a month...

It would assume that you're the one with old information
