I think people who love installing those "thick" glass screen protectors would love this rumored convex home button. A convex home button will eliminate any kind of need for a thick home button sticker after a glass screen protector has been applied onto the phone.

I am excited about this rumor. What will be interesting is to see how Apple sets the trend for a fingerprint sensor across the mobile market. This will be something that, if the customer thirsts for it, will take a while for competitors to catch up to. I like the thought of a fingerprint sensor on iPads, too. The final advantage of this feature will be security that provides the possibility to include mobile payment beyond Passbook.

Bingo! The smart phone had reduced the amount of things/devices we need to carry. Phone, music player, gps, camera, etc. etc... Once you are actually the ONLY person able to access your phone, it can then be realistically used as an extension of your identity. No more ID, credit cards - wallet in general. I am all for this, and definitely think this is the next step for smart phones..

A convex button should go against all the design concepts of Apple. Don't think we´'ll see this.

Judging by massive sales of Samsung, HTC and other 5 inch handsets, millions of people do, millions of iPhone sales lost due to the tiny screen size.

Or due to those Samsung and HTC phones being considerably cheaper, being the 'budget' solution.

Of course it does. That's why Apple is adding the fingerprint scanner. They will then have absolute proof of who is using the phone. That data is extremely valuable. As a "silent" revenue stream, Apple will really double down on profit.

It's every FBI agents wet dream to plant on bug on your person. With the magical & revolutionary Apple iPhone 5S, they should pay people to voluntarily carry one. It's quite funny to read all the comments from those that are so naive they are actually excited to be fingerprinted. Wonders never cease.

wow, just wow.

In all seriousness, who places their phone face down on flat surfaces without a case? I also don't think if it's convex it will be VERY convex. I look at my 4S and the home button is maybe ever-so-slightly concave.

But I'm willing to bet if anything the button is flat. As someone else said earlier, that's how Jony Ive would want it.

I do...all the time. The face of the phone is Gorilla Glass and is extremely difficult to scratch. I'd rather put it down on its face than its back, tbh.

Instead, what about a 4.3"/4,7" retina screen ?

I don't know why nobody has mentioned it yet, but 9to5mac has posted some mock ups of the 5S yesterday, also clearly showing a different home button (compared to the iPhone 5):

I DO NOT WANT A BIGGER SCREEN IN MY POCKET. glad people like you aren't in charge of apple.

I see the home button as the same as usual and the fingerprint sensor incorporated into the screen. Makes most sense imo.

yeah, a giant 4" diameter sensor makes more sense than a ~1cm diameter sensor. that should only cost 100x more and likely mess up what you're trying to look at.

I don't want a fingerprint sensor. JUST SAY "NO" TO BIOMETRICS!

I look forward to the day my phone can monitor my blood levels and tell me what I need to eat. bring on the iDoctor!

Obviously, you have never used before 4.7 inch screen. I've used the iPhone 5 and let me tell you, coming from a 4S it is awkward. 4.7 is the perfect size (5" is the max.) Seriously, if you can get your hands on the Nexus 4, just play around with it. I'm not saying you should thing about switching to Android, I'm just saying you should try a bigger screen.

I've tried out 4.7 inch phone. DO NOT WANT. I like the change from the 4s to the 5. I got a new ipod touch, love it in my pocket. big enough, no desire for it to be any bigger. makes me sad to pick up my 4s when I leave the house that is twice as thick and heavy. I wish the next iphone was exactly like the current ipod touch, that would be amazing. small and light in the pocket, big enough to do **** if you need to.

No one cares about a 4.7 inch screen other then Andre the Giant.

People look stupid holding a 4.7 inch phone to their ear/head.

Judging by recent figures, Apple seem to have failed to appreciate just how many Andres there are.

I think people look stupid squinting at their small iPhones as they play games, browse the internet, write texts, look at Facebook, update Twitter, send an email, check out their route on Maps, add a contact, check out their calendar etc. etc. etc. But at least they look good for that 30sec phone call.

My Galaxy S4 is a mini personal computer that just happens to make calls. I'd rather the bigger screen and no fingerprint scanner (which I'd end-up deactivating anyway).

I didn't bother reading your post after seeing numbers. Go back to my early reply to AppleIsKing. When I said "Failing", I mean't failing in quality and innovation. Apple needs to get rid of the "It's just enough" attitude towards the iPhone. They need to make the iPhone an overachiever just like the Mac is, because that's what makes Macs great.

it's becoming a mature product, nobody gets pissed with the minimal changes they make when they come out with new iPods. I welcome every new phone to be twice as fast with a better camera, and maybe something new for a bonus when the tech is ready. I don't get what you expect them to do to "innovate." samsung s4 was an innovation fail as well. you want a freaking holographic projector or for it to fold your laundry or something? just because they don't pack in NFC, which I don't even know how I would ever use, or make it bigger, which would piss me off, they're not innovating..

I really just still can't see the point in a bigger screen. If you need a bigger screen use a tablet/PC/TV.

I like my phone being tiny and light and the lack of a solid Android phone that isn't huge is pretty much the only thing keeping me on the iphone. I like being able to use the phone with one hand.

Light web browsing still works fine without an extra half inch of screen.

Totally agree, times have changed and we spend less time using our phones as phones and more time interacting with the screen. My iPhone 5 tiny screen doesn't cut it anymore I'm afraid :(

I am sure the EU and especially Germany is going to love this whole fingerprint idea ... Not. Especially with snowden and the nsa scandal on tv 24/7

I had hoped that Apple would make the fingerprint sensor the main idea behind the iWatch. Thereby making a single personal but universal device, that makes "signing in" and "unlocking" everything from iPhones and iPads to Macs and websites.
Wireless communication from the iWatch with fingerprint sensor to whatever device/website you need to unlock could revolutionize the cumbersome login.

You might not have been paying attention when Cookie said the time wasn't right for large displays on smartphones. So far, large displays haven't met Apple's standards of perfection. Cookie believes they'll be ready in the next couple of years. :p

Yeah his comments were so strange, as if they were talking points from 2010. I think he was just covering for the fact that the iphone 5 and 5s were Steve's last instructions. And either out of respect for him, or just a lack of foresight (phones take a year to develop?), they stuck with the 4" screen.

To all the large screen haters, 4.7" doesn't mean the phone will be THAT much bigger, no one is talking about phablets. Life is short, embrace change.

Check out this phone from Huawei. (it's a 4.7" screen, but overall dimensions are not too big)

It's a mock up, they don't know anything about a home button change as there have been no leaks. "Mock Up"

RIP laying my iphone face down on the table.

Out of interest why are you placing your phone screen down on the table?

Are you so easily distracted that ths is the only way you can stop looking at it, and does not the screen turn off after a few moments anyway?

Or do you lie in an environment where thing are always falling from the sky and you do this to prevent impact damage?
