Maybe this is a troll post. (edited)

One, you can't tell what model phone it is, 5 or 5s. (It's a 5s, as corrected)

Two, it's clearly bent, not "defect" bent, but "Hold the BatPhone(TM) he sat on it" bent .

Three, the screen cover has bubbles, indicating the bending action occurred after the application.

Finally, one poster recalled seeing the photos before, and I recall this too, it was run on Engadget, some time ago. I may be wrong, but there's something to them, my gut says troll bate. (Not possible as shown to be a 5S)

Its a troll bait. OP posted posted for the very first time on Sept 30th, and he never came back. Troll

Same thing, different day

Got this 2 days before christmas. Went directly into an otterbox case and wasn't taken out until the screen protector started looking a little "off". No, I don't carry it in my back pocket. And no I don't sit on it.

Apple store tomorrow and if they don't make it right I'm going to be on the war path. Verizon store already told me to pound sand.

Best I can figure after reading around here and the other usual places is that the cheap aluminum theory is probably true. Case facilitates excessive temperatures for the aluminum which becomes malleable.
That is a defect plain and simple. A phone should be designed to hold up to daily, normal, use. I'll be back with an update.

Oh no! Not the WAR PATH!!

Yes the war path! Basically means I'll make a bunch of threats and gesture menacingly with my hands. Make a bunch of phone calls and demand to speak to a managers and so on. Can't do much in my position can I.

It's an expression.

Aluminum bends... a poor design choice.

There are so many different grades of aluminum, all with different properties. Either way, it'd probably be around 500° F before that happens. It didn't happen in the otterbox case, that's for sure.

If it didn't come out of the box like this, either you or your case did something that caused it to bend. Aluminum isn't going to bend itself in normal conditions inside of an otterbox case.

That's a really odd place for the phone to bend. Usually if it happens it occurs at the weak point where the volume cutouts are.

Which otterbox case was it? They make quite a few now. I have a suspicion that it is the one that comes in two pieces that slide together and meet at the middle of the phone? I think it's called the Reflex.

Defender case. solid back

Three options as I see it.
1. I broke my phone or bent it doing something stupid and I'm here to drum up noise and pity or something. Lot's of people see physical defects and scream "you broke it". Not always the case.

2. The case had something to do with it. This is a pretty popular case. The case doesn't look warped but I'll measure accurately tomorrow. The case could be counterfeit. I'll look into that option more.

3. Manufactures defect. I'm aware of the properties of aluminum and have worked with it before. This is thin aluminum resting around internals that get pretty toasty while charging. Then add insulation from the case itself. Heat could have nothing to do with it or it could have had an effect. Doesn't particularly matter to me.

This happened in the case.

Sorry, I'm calling shenanigans here... iPhones DON'T bend like that in Otterbox cases! Sorry, I'm not buying the story he's trying to sell. I smell BS!

Don't see how that's possible without some kind of damage or deformation to the otter box. That's a pretty major bend you have there. I don't think the case would even snap closed over that.

Phones don't bend on their own just sitting on the counter. Something must have bent it. You can argue as to whether it should have bent that easily, but when you really really get down to it, it was mechanically bent.

1) In no way, shape or form did heat cause this.
2) The only defect is in your logic.
3) If you don't agree, keep reading 1) and 2).

I'm with everyone else on this. I call BS. Phones don't just bend - ever - unless induced by an outside force. IE, sitting on it, bending in too tight of jeans or whatnot. Aluminum by nature is a SOFT metal. It will bend when enough pressure is applied. Hell, I could twist and bend my phone now if I really wanted to. It's not that hard. Same with a plastic phone.

It's not a fault in the metal or device. It's a fault with the user. I really enjoy how when people break crap to the point where it's NOT normal, daily use, they find the need to include said abnormality as a daily, normal use wear so it can be replaced.

I hope Apple gives you the cold shoulder honestly.

I have had all iPhones from 2nd Gen on and none have been in cases. I use them as phones, the device they were intended for. Never cracked a screen, never had them blow up, spontaneously bend or start walking on their own.

No way your phone bent without an external force. Probably when it happened you didn't notice. Some on sat on your phone, maybe not you, but someone did.

To the people saying apple customer service is going down, it's not. Apple is just trying to save money by not replacing every phone that has a small defect but instead fix it.

Hate to see people crying that their power button broke and they were expecting to get a new phone but got their old phone fixed for free...

a plastic/rubber otterbox case has enough force to bend aluminum?

I read a while back an internal Apple memo stating that they would replace bent aluminum frame with no screen damage under warranty, which leads me to believe that Apple knows that the aluminum frame is prone to bending. Take it to Apple and get it exchanged.

I love it!

Instead of "I don't care enough to not do something stupid with the $500 device I just purchased" its "Apple how dare you not rewrite the laws of physics so I don't have to care for my expensive purchase".

Man consumerism really is warping peoples mind's, "the customer is always right" even if they do something incredibly dumb and obvious.

I've got my flame shield, so I'm ready for the "well I sit on my phone and nothing happens so therefore that is the intended normal use" posts.

What would he gain from coming here and lying to us? Apple won't care what our opinions are. Give him the benefit of the doubt!

I fully understand that Apple doesn't always ship out a flawless device. But this guy is saying that it was fine out of the box. His story about how the heat from the phone charging along with the insulation of the case causing the aluminum to warp is just plain outrageous.

The fact of the matter is that aluminum is malleable. If you put enough force on it, it'll bend. Why is Apple to blame when someone isn't careful with their $650-850 device and damages it?

I find it a bit hard to believe that it bent of its own accord. I've had a 5th gen iPod touch and iPad mini for over a year. Both made of aluminium and neither have bent. Of course both posters could be unlucky.
