...They just can't say "we sold 10 million phones" just because they got 10 million preorders; to say that the phones must be sold.

links are my sources:

They got 4 million preorders on September 12th (first 24 hours, so a little September 13th as well)

The "10 million sales" are not preorders, they are sales over the weekend (September 19-21) and I don't even know if they are claiming online orders. They are not counting preorders from the week before, link above this one

I do not claim to work for Apple or know how they count their sales. I just think that counting people who order online during those 3 days and are now waiting should count. I am only saying I would not hold it against them. Apple isn't saying "phones in users' hands because they cannot say what is happening to all 10 million phones.

Not at all, I see what you're trying to do with the comparison of specs and stuff though. However, the 5S isn't newly designed or newly introduced which the 5C was.

My point was that actual data would seem to indicate the exact opposite of the point that you were making. The plastic back didn't have any significant affect on the sales of the $99 on contract model.

Maybe Apple was hoping that repackaging the 5 into the 5C would spur sales of the older model. But it certainly didn't hurt them when they remained the same percentage.

So much for all those people claiming they "manufactured shortages" in order to increase demand.

Yep. We can never get people to drop that myth. 10 million of a brand new and complicated device is really an impressive inventory. Assuming $250 to make the phone (and that is a very low ball number based on component costs), that is $2.5 billion in Inventory that had to be stockpiled and shipped over the course of two months or so. Of course Apple has the cash to do that fairly easily, but it still is something they have to manage for.

I could be happier: I want my pre-ordered iPhone 6+ to be delivered! No sign of a delivery date yet. :(

10 million phones aren't 6 to 10 billion USD profit. They are probably around 7 billion revenue, but not profit.

Put that in context...so a company that makes 1 Million in annual revenue (in many industries this would be an achievement) it would take that company 7,000 years to have as much revenue as Apple did in this launch. And that doesn't include any other revenue they had during the same period (Macs, iPads, accessories, iTunes, etc)

Pretty mind blowing.

Returning mine today

Sorry Apple. I lucked out this weekend because I never had a chance to ship my 5s to Amazon and after using my iPhone 6 (not plus) I became well aware why Steve Jobs didn't want to go larger. I wanted the technology in the 6, but now I hope they will find a way to upgrade 5s with the same m8.
I primarily use my phone while running or mountain biking and the size fits well in my gear.
The six was too big for my large hands and dropped it twice. Someone told me (galaxy user) that eventually you will get used to it. I thought about that statement for a while are realized that I never had to get used to the iPhones until now. That's when I pretty much knew for sure.
But really, Apple should consider making a 5Z with the same specs as a 6 - or call the 5z a 6... just for the smaller size. I was willing to pay the extra for the M8 just because I thought it would be fun to see real elevations and whatever else the developers dreamed up with, but for now, my 5s will do.
Apple, Steve never wanted to be Samsung - develop your own products and don't get caught up in competing. It's game over once you start competing with other companies.

iPhone6 :

- Bad screen aspect ratio - should be paper A6
- Too thin → Protruding camera, rather than longer battery life and flush lens
- Ugly antenna bands
- No OIS on basic model
- Base storage should be 32GB
- No wireless charging
- No iPhone 6C with all-plastic back
- No sapphire screen

Wow, if that's all you could come up with to whine about, it makes the iPhone 6 sound like a pretty amazing device.

Yep I got it totally wrong as I admitted the last time you raised that point a couple weeks ago. :D And I couldn't be happier to have got it wrong. I wasn't sure it was even possible, but Apple has raised the bar and built the world's first truly usable phablet device.

I have 1 iPhone 6 and 1 iPhone 6 Plus. And I'll be keeping both. They are incredible devices.

Explain how it's useable while the competitions phones are not.

What channel fill? Are you making it up as you go?

This is what Tim Cook said in the press release:

"While our team managed the manufacturing ramp better than ever before, we could have sold many more iPhones with greater supply and we are working hard to fill orders as quickly as possible.”

Why would Cook make a statement like this if there were unsold phones sitting on store shelves?

Given the fact that this is supposed to be their biggest launch yet (TC's own words), I find the difference with last year underwhelming.

On a positive note, this year does not include China (last year's numbers did).

Yeah, a million more in three days is such a small number -- so small I'm sure you would reject a lotto win or gift of only a paltry million dollars.

Get real.

Went into my local Apple store to pick up an iPhone 6 yesterday. The way it worked out, I was the last reservation pickup for the day. I was in the store for 15 minutes while I was processed. In that time, store associates told ~30 people that the iPhone 6 was "sold out" and they should "try again tomorrow".

Last night – at 12 midnight when the online reservations open again – I checked that store, and a bunch of others, and they mostly showed close to full availability of devices, apart from the Plus obviously.

This particular store closes at 7PM Sunday and reopens at 9AM Monday. There are no couriers that provide deliveries in our region (or any other?) after 7PM on a Sunday. The first appointments for reservation pickups are 9AM this morning.

So...it looks like Apple turns away willing customers, standing in their stores, when they have devices stacked up and ready to sell in their stockrooms. There is no capacity management/crowd control defence because this particular store was busy, but with no lines all day Sunday. We were in the store earlier to pick up a case and there were maybe 5-6 people waiting for reservations, not unlike most days when there are people waiting for out-of-warranty repairs or Genius appointments.

Love the phone, love the ecosystem but, unless I'm missing something here, Apple constrains supply to create media buzz, in the process providing a pretty dismal customer experience, and creating potentially thousands of unnecessary vehicle journeys.

Also, the service from the frazzled associates was close to appalling from what I witnessed personally, and observed by others close by. Angela Ahrendts really needs to improve things IMHO, because Apple store service has become only marginally better than Best Buy service in the last 2-3 years.

So, I drove away having been willingly wallet-raped, with a phone with a buggy OS and a sticky-out camera, that does precisely nothing that my previous 5s couldn't do - and I was one of the lucky ones.

"No iPhone 6C with all-plastic back" is the best one.

I wonder if Apple would ever put out two new devices with different materials (the iPhone 5C was technically "new" last year along side the metal iPhone 5S, but I mean two totally new devices, like the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus is this weekend)

This made me laugh.

Someone didn't get their hands on one.

Judging from what I saw in the lineups at Apple stores this is pretty much what is happening. It's an epidemic.

Just so everyone remembers: Apple, unlike Samsung, reports actual "sales", not shipments. Big difference.

Epidemic implies that it is a problem. Why shouldn't the first phones sold go to those most willing to pay for them? If someone in China is willing to pay twice as much as you are, why shouldn't they be able to pay someone to wait in a line to buy it for them and bring it home? The not so subtle racism here is really surprising and disgusting.
