Very interesting. This is the type of info I was hoping to gather with this thread. Thanks. Will be curious to see in the coming weeks as more and more people get them if it becomes a more widespread issue.

I had my 5 and 5s each for a year with no protectors. No deep scratches. Had the 6+ for a couple weeks, two deep scratches. No different treatment.

Not complaining though, phone still works fine and I'll happily keep using it.

first 6 inch drop of my iphone 6 resulted in a deep scratch on the bottom left of the glass. 2 years with my iphone 5 no scratches

been using my 5S without a screen protector for 8 months, only can see scratches if I tilt the screen under a light bulb.

Used a 6 for 4 days. Took both phones and put them under the light like the sun and saw maybe 15-20 tiny scratches compared to my 5S.

Im already returning my 6 due to poor build quality and poor IOS 8 and no JB.

It's true. Went to Apple store, almost ALL 6's are scratched, NONE of 5s/c are scratched. Some scratches on 6's are so deep that they magnify pixels, supervisible and superannoying.

I wonder if :apple: used acrylic plastic on the 6's...

that's because nobody ever touches iPhone 5s anymore nowadays

Make sure to specify that last thing when you return it.

2nd that: more scratches. I've the black iPhone 6 plus. I don't like tamper glass or screen protector never had one since the 3GS when I got my first iPhone. I've notice tiny scratches

I'm being more careful now. I place my 6 Plus In pouch made for sunglasses before placing it in my front pocket. Never felt a need to this with my other recent iPhones.

Scratch prone too. Is this what people are referring to as hair-gate? This iPhone must really be the cheapest ever released.

Hair-gate is a "flaw" with the iPhones 6/6 Plus where a person's (way too long) hair gets stuck in the crack between the glass and the aluminum enclosure. This "problem" is mainly seen by people with long hair. The best ways to circumvent hair-gate are:
1) Get a crew cut (of which I am a great fan)
2) Get a case that covers the gap
3) Not get an iPhone 6 or 6 Plus
4) Get a Samchit phone

The short version: Samsung is paying people to spread the anti-Apple propaganda, and hair-gate is the latest attack on us "wallhuggers"

It is not the glass that scratches, it is the oleographic coating.

Whether it's the glass or the oleophobic coating (which I agree it's probably the oleophobic coating) the screen getting scratched pretty easily compared to the 5s sucks.

The iPhone 5S on display at my Apple store are still launch day 5S from 2013 with less scratches then the launch day 6s.

Ill make sure to say that about the JB. When I worked for Apple back in 2008-2009 a lot of employees including myself were jail breaking. They still are. When I bought my 6 last week from apple, the guy selling it to me had a jail broken 5S.

Ive been rocking a naked iPhone 6 since launch. First time ever the I used an iPhone with no screen protector...phone is in a pocket with nothing else. There are no scratches on my screen.

Everyone always says that. It might well be true but what does it mean? Is there any reason that's better or worse?
Well, eventually the oleophobic coating will wear off, it is microns thin. It's better in the fact that the glass isn't what is actually scratched, just the coating. Can you still see it at certain angles? Yes. If it doesn't etch into the glass then it is just a superficial mark really. Some would say a scratch is a scratch is a scratch, it just depends on your perspective I guess.

I got my first tempered glass screen protector for my 6 and it was applied before the phone ever left the store. Normally I get BodyGardz anti-glare screen protectors but the rep recommended the tempered glass and I'm happy with it.

Isn't the iPhone Gorilla Glass?

The first iPhone used Corning Gorilla Glass, but it's not clear who manufactures the current iPhone glass.

Apple's 2014 supplier list has both Corning and Asahi (a Japanese glass manufacturer) on it.

remember back in the days when we didn't care if our phones were scratched or not? I miss those days... I feel like I have OCD now. Cases and screen protectors and insurance...

 :(

Because back in those days there wasn't a giant slab of touchscreen glass on your phone.

Is there a way to repair the oleophobic coating if it gets scratched? If not, I don't see how it's much comfort to cite that fact. An irreparable scratch looks awful.
