remember back in the days when we didn't care if our phones were scratched or not? I miss those days... I feel like I have OCD now. Cases and screen protectors and insurance...

 :(

The first mobile phone I bought had a monochrome display that was so lousy that I didn't care if the plastic face got a scratch! My last phone was a flip phone where the LCD was covered most of the time.

I think when the phone is cheap people don't care as much about damage.

I've been using my 6 for a week now and I work in very dusty and sandy environments. I don't use a case or screen protector and I just rub the screen down with my jeans to wipe off dirt or smudges. I don't see any scratches yet.

Because back in those days there was a giant slab of touchscreen glass on your phone.

"A giant slab of touchscreen" is not a logical reason. Phones back then were plastic slabs with plastic screen windows that still cost 200-400 a pop when not subsidized.

Your reasoning is insane.

I'm not saying I don't suffer from this madness... but what it is... is madness.:mad::mad::mad:

Those phones were still in the hundreds of dollars when un-subsidized and of cheaper quality. I recall the Moto Razr V3 being $500. Which I guess was the beginning of the premium quality (metal and glass) phone.

Not seeing any more scratches on my 6. Every year we seem to get a batch with defective oleophobic coating. Perhaps yours is from that batch and Apple can swap it out.

The material quality was lowered to meet the demand of the initial release. Happens frequently.

I got my first tempered glass screen protector for my 6 and it was applied before the phone ever left the store. Normally I get BodyGardz anti-glare screen protectors but the rep recommended the tempered glass and I'm happy with it.

Tempered glass plus thin aluminum bumper case is a close to naked you can get while being wise and protecting the phone.

For those who don't use a screen protector and have scratches, is it only noticeable with the screen off?

I've always used a screen protector, but was wanting to not with the 6, especially since the screen protectors don't cover the screen all the way, I feel that would annoy me...I don't mind there being noticeable scratches, I just want to know if they can be seen while the display is on? I'm guessing not unless a really deep scratch, which I also feel could be avoided (ie, keep phone in a dedicated pocket without keys, etc).

I must be doing something right, because my launch day Space Gray 128GB 6 is completely scratch-free, in spite of being run sans screen protector. The only precaution I take is keeping it solo in my pocket.

Is it possible that there's a batch of phones out there with defective oleophobic coatings that's causing these issues?

Regards,
Adam

Apple did not use Gorilla glass with the 6 series phones...

no

:(

What are you basing that on?

Apple had never publicly given the name of its suppliers.

I remember during the iPhone 4 early days there were lots of pundits talking up iPhones scratching.

People on this very board saying "if Apple had only used Gorrila Glass like such & such (who went so far as to advertise that fact trying to sell phones)

Only to have Walter Isaacson's book mention that iPhones had Gorrila Glass all along, even with Apple marketing their special iPhone 4 glass (very similar marketing to ion-strengthened marketing today).

Just curious.

I can't find the article about how apple had cancelled the corning contract as they had planned on using sapphire. Later in the testing phase they found out that the sapphire screens were unable to survive the drop testing....

they had to scramble and use more than one source for the screens and my understanding is that is why they used the generic process term instead of using one companies trademarked name...

Had my black one since launch day. Always handle it with care and wipe it with microfiber cloth. After reading the thread, I've wiped my screen clean and tilted to check it. There's at least 5~6 hair line size scratches on the left side of the screen where I used the most when I use one hand. This got to be the most fragile screen I've ever used.

Its the Oleophobic coating thats scratching. Best bet is to put a screen protector on it.

To those whose 6 has scratches on the screen: Are you putting anything together with the phone in your pocket? I'm curious because I don't use screen protectors and I make it a habit not to put anything else in the same pocket that I put my phone, and I haven't got any scratches on my 6 (yet).

No, empty pocket. Same as my 5 and 5s.

I don't keep a screen protector on my iPhone's... ever!! I tend to have the phone in a pocket where there is no keys, coins etc. The screen of my iPh6 is scrach/marks free but it does get smudges. I have to wipe it every now and then.

Has anyone else noted that they are no longer using Gorilla glass? I feel like this should be news.

Hmmm. Let me think… what is gorilla glass? Is it ion strengthened glass? Hmmm…

Almost a month later and still no scratches. I must be using it wrong?

I have to aim my off screen at a light source in just the right manner in order to see the faint scratches. I don't notice them with the screen on at all. My iPhone 5 was covered in hair line scratches. I'm careful not to drop my devices but the babying ends there.

Once the "newness" wears off, it's back to "toss it in a chair" or just putting it somewhere in my purse."

Mine looks the same as the day I bought it. And will for the next 2 years. Of course I'm using one of those "ugly" glass screen protectors. Much better than scratches IMO. :)

I get smudges like crazy... but no scratches yet. There have been a couple times I thought I saw a scratch, but a wipe of a microfiber cloth and it comes right off.

I've had my iPhone 6+ since 9/25 with no screen protector. Just a case with an adequate lip to keep it off the table it I lay it face down.

awesome, I always keep my phone in a dedicated pocket, I think with the apple leather case and applecare+, I will be fine without a screen protector

awesome! No screen protector it is for me

Isn't the iPhone Gorilla Glass?

No. After the Sapphire deal fell through, Apple was likely unable to secure a deal with Corning due to time restraints and is NOT using Gorilla Glass on iphone 6.

There is no contract between Apple and Corning for iphone 6/plus. They are using a cheap alternative.

Naked 6 and ZERO scratches.

Ya because you haven't actually dropped it or put it under any stress yet.

Be interesting to know what glass is actually on it. Reminds me of a little problem myself and my wife had with the Asus Padfone 2 a while back.

Initially they advertised it as having gorilla glass on it. Our padfone tablet units and phones looked pretty scratched up in various places after only two months. Then her tablet unit and my phone unit cracked within a week of each other. The tablet was in her bag with the official case on and my phone fell off the sofa arm from 2 ft on to the carpet and shattered. When preparing to complain to Asus I noticed some advertising materials still claimed gorilla glass while others had changed to 'corning fit glass'. After a lot of arguing and digging it seems that fit glass is a lower grade tempered glass that they do, it is not very fit for purpose and scratches and cracks really easily. In the end they replaced the screens on both phone and tablet units and we quickly sold them.
