Mountable Lens Accessories

Don't let me stop anyone from complaining about the lens but has anyone else considered there is a larger purpose behind this?

A few months ago there was a patent for lens attachments (https://www.macrumors.com/2014/03/13/apple-bayonet-lens-mount/)
I've seen the protruding lens mentioned in multiple leaks now but I don't recall it ever being tied back to this patent.

I realize most of Apple's patents never see the light of day but I can't help thinking about this every time the protruding lens is mentioned.

Really hope that Jony Ive will not lose it with the iPhone 6 design but I still have faith in Jony Ive and Apple. I can imagine him saying something like "beautifully unapologetically white lines and protruding camera" or "precisely curved edges to conform to the shape of your palm".

Anyway, jokes aside, like what Steve Jobs says, Design is not just how it looks and feel. Design is how it works, we should just stop complaining about it and wait for the iPhone to be released and test it for ourselves.

It seems like many people are disappointed with the slight protruding of the camera but who knows, it may be like the unsightly lines on iPhone 4. It may have some benefits or function.

And that's why all major phone manufacturers continue to make 3.5" smartphones.

Or not.
Apple's 3.5" and 4" smartphones still sell better than any 5.5" smartphone on the market sold by those other major phone manufacturers.

Yes, benefits like succumbing to the laws of optics. Until there is some revolutionary development in that area, we have reached the limit of how thin a decent-quality camera can become.

Every single year the doom-sayers come out to proclaim the end of Apple. "The antenna doesn't work without a case! Apple are finished!" "The back of the phone scuffs too easily! It's all over for Apple!" "The camera protrudes from the phone! Apple will never recover!" Every Eyear they're wrong. Just wait until you see the real thing before moaning.

The evidence is mounting that there will indeed be a 5.5" iPhone 6, whether it will be released at the same time as the 4.7" we will find out. But i think they will both be announced at the same time i.e, September 9th :D

I knew Captain Obvious was a member here!

We don't know what we don't know. All we've seen so far are schematics and beat up prototypes that may or may not be the real deal. That's why I'm waiting for the announcement to form my opinion.

Not really sure about the slight camera protrusion. However, I think that it really won't be noticible with a case on. Unless you're the type that prefers no case. ;) Looking forward to seeing the actual, final product

"We realized that after, you know, years of iPhone, that people know the antenna bands are there. So there's no need to hide them anymore. So with this stunning new design, the beautiful bands are fully visible, there's no excess shell or paint job getting in the way of your content.."

If LG can make a 5.5" screen fit in a 146.3 x 74.6 phone, I don't understand why Apple can't.

My concern with a protruding lens would be that the phone would not lay flat... I'm sure many many people have their phone laying on a desk/table and navigate it with one finger, if it constantly rocked and moved that would be a really pain!

for the first time in all the generations i did not buy a 5s. My 5, its battery, goes from 100$ to 79% to 53% to 27% to 19% to 11% to 1%. Then can last on that 1% for a while. Need. New. Phone.

Mine turns off automatically at 3% :p Not part of the 1 percenters:( Still sporting a 4 lol

Nice mock up! Hopefully Apple reduces the bezels a little. The comparisons you list are all last gen phones except for the Nexus 5. But the Nexus 6 is right around the corner. Smaller bezels would be nice.....

Thanks man! I also had some other mockups with current gen phones:

Especially the comparison with the Moto X and LG G2 Mini with the same size screen.... hurts :)

Someone already discussed that with regards to the iPod touch. they said it only rock when pressing certain portions of the screen and only by a mm, so it's barely noticeable. 99% of the time I'm holding my phone when I'm operating it, or it's in my pocket and i'm using headphones. It's pretty rare for me to type on it laying on my desk. I'll still pick it up to use it.

what if the lens are ticker because they need a little bit more room for a projector?
How cool would be a phone with a projector?

Apple's 3.5" and 4" smartphones still sell better than any 5.5" smartphone on the market sold by those other major phone manufacturers.

That's a well known fact and I don't disagree. You say more people want 3.5" phones than 5.5" phones. I'm just questioning why NO major manufacturer makes a 3.5" phone (including Apple after the 6 comes out) and most, if not all, are making 5"+ phones.

It appears as though MOST people want larger phones. All you need to do is look around. Look at everyone with a non-iPhone that was made in the last 2 years.

Now, I'm not saying there's not a market for 4" phones. Ideally IMO, Apple would release a new version in 4", 4.7" and 5.5". I'm surprised they're completely abandoning the 4" phone (as far as new models go) but the fact that they're completely abandoning that size segment just goes to show how much the wants of consumers have changed.
